An AAR of sorts following a recent skirmish between the forces of Generalissimo Dr De'Ath and Coronel Malamute against that Texian Rebel James "Jim" Bibbles using the Sharp Practice rules.
The Texian forces have deployed on the outskirts of the small town of Gonzales. These comprise a light gun, positioned on the roof of one of the town buildings, two units of riflemen including Davy Crumpett and his Tennessean volunteers, the flamboyant Alabama Red Rovers, the well drilled and equipped New Orleans Greys and a unit of militia.
The Mexican officers eager for glory have devided their forces into two commands: Generalissimo De'Ath commands three companies of Fusileers and one unit of Cazadores. He orders his men to cross the river at the bridge. Coronel Malamute commanding two units of Grenados and one unit of Cazadores crosses at the ford.
The Fusileers advance on the town in line formation already coming under fire from the Texian rilfes and taking casualties:

The Grenados press forward in column

Cazadores, light infantrymen armed with Baker rifles cross the ford and advance cautiously.

Amazing! I love your range of figures, and I think they do a great job in representing a key part of the Old West genre. Can't wait for more!
-
Very nice. Was just looking at a uniform book today that I got from the Alamo a couple of years ago. Who makes the figures?

Colonel Davy Crumpett and his Tennessean volunteers. Bibbles told us "he likes to lick the bottom, its the best part". No idea what he was talking about....

It's men and phrases like this that created the republic!! ;D
Amazing looking game, another cracker. :D

It's so difficult, having seen this wonderful thread, not to start an Alamo project at long last. I love the Old West anyway and this early period is pretty iconic. Plus I have Sharp Practice! Do you use any kind of era-based modifications?

No real need to make alterations, the weapons are spot on, the Mexican army was based on Napoleons with fusileers, Grenadiers and light infantrymen so no changes to make there. The Texians are mainly militia and we rate the troops as per the book: poor, avaerage, good or elite. The only real change is some of the bonus cards are period specific, so no Sharp Practice or thin red line cards etc. We also changed the Tiffin Card to Tequila... ;D
-
Even better :D

Another great looking game. That's a good quantity of Mehicano's now, quite the collection gathering apace.

Great game! The adobe village you've created is beautiful. I'd love to assemble one like that for some sort of "Blood Meridian" based scenario.

Luvverly!

Excellent property in a prime location, the defensible south facing vista should be a definite selling point.
A very sound buy for any budding revolutionary. :D

Thanks Galloping Major.
Again, this board just looks sumptuous. I like the little additions to the terrain (I'm starting to use old CDs to base little additions like you have).
-
the more i look at this the more i want to buy some figures for this era! love the New Orleans greys
-
Missed this! :o
Little more can be said about the quality of the miniatures and terrain - so very beautiful. :-*
What a great line of minis Nick - they are just the bees knees.
The masses of Mexicans exchanging fire look just awesome. One of my favorite parts in Sharp Practice is placing smoke. Sad I know...
Don't think I missed it, although amongst the bum licking etc I could have - but who won? :?
-
The Texians would've eventually :D
cheers

You have to pack that lark in, ya know.
It will only encourage him.

A beautiful table! It's always a pleasure to see well painted minis with well painted terrain. Bravo!
How did you do the thatched roofs on the adobe houses?
-
The thatch is teddy bear fur, soaked in PVA.
-
Nick, your scenics are top notch :D

I love your terrain Nick. You're adobes are an inspiration. Your figure range is also fantastic. Think I'm going to have to buy a set or two to tempt me into this earlier period of the Anerican West.

Dear Malamute,
In my wargame clubs i don't find anybody who want's to play this period with me, so on several forums i'v asking how to play the
Sharp Practice rules solo? I found on blogs AAR of Sharp Practice solo, so do you know anybody who has played solo. I was wondering how to handle the other side? So if i play with the Texans how do i deal with the Mexicans on their turn?If anyone can help me, let me know.
Cheers,
Dirk
-
Hi Dirk. Sorry to hear you can't find an opponent. :-[
I don't know anyone who has played SP solo. But I don't think it will be difficult to organise. To get the best from the rules you need to have a clear scenario in mind for each game. Work out some objectives for each side and stick to those during the game.
The random order of play will dictate who moves and when. Each side will have a number of Big Men who will control one or more groups of figures or squads. The big men are represented by cards that are shuffled into a deck. The cards are drawn one at a time with each big man moving his group/squad when his card is drawn. So for a example a Texian Big Man is activated and takes his go then the next card drawn from the deck maybe a Mexican Big Man. If he is in range of the Texian who has just moved he may react to deal with him. Perhaps ordering his men to advance towards the Texian or fire or something specific to the scenario.
If yu go onto YouTube and search for the Toofatlardies they have several videos which explain the sequence of play in Sharp Practice. They should help you get the basic rules worked out.
-
I will give it a try and see how it runs, thanks
cheers,
Dirk

Another Super Bueno production by Malamute Studios... :-*

Love the report! Your collection is lovely Malamute, and I envy you londoners have such a great access to such great games and terrain pieces :'(
But I did spot a secret weapon smuggled from the future by the devious time-traveller Jim. Is it a sort of death ray the top left corner? Bloody cheeky I say!

It is always a treat to see your figures and terrain.
You got to love it, thanks for sharing.
-
Yep, I played SP solo, much in the way that Nick describes. ;)

Excellent figures there and nice paint jobs. Just resisting the temptation till the lead mountain comes down to a manageable size though.
