Hi,
As some of you know, I'll soon play OPEX, a french modern combat skirmish game, oriented on french forces contemporary "assymetric" actions. I'll play it with my brother, I hope one day by months...
But in the mean time, do you know any game, including french modern list, allowing interesting and challenging (campaign and scenarion driven) solitaire game ?
thanks

I suggest you to take a look on www.twohourwargames.com (http://www.twohourwargames.com) and take a look. They have the best solo rules for almost any kind of solo wargames IMHO, and you can even play coop with your brother (or against each other it it suits you both). I think i´ve read somewhere about NUTS been used to modern warfare.
-
FNG are Two Hour Wargames Vietnam rules, based on the Nuts! system. It's designed for asymmetric warfare... but obviously you will have to do some modification to make it fit modern French forces. Nevertheless the framework is there, the principles are the same and you can lead your platoon through a 'Tour of Duty' in whatever far-flung hell-hole the CFT has despatched them to.
Follow Diceplague's link and you can find a stripped-down free set of the core THW rule engine to try out. If you like how that works, you will love the rules themselves.
-
I should have noticed "a ready to use ruleset" lol
I already have bought plenty of THW games (ATZ, WHL, WHAA, RRTK, LTL, 5150NB...). They are great for each style they adress.
But I suck at creating custom rules, or adapting existing ones :-X And to be honest, it's one of the rare things in our hobby I hate : creating or modifying rules lol
I prefer to pay someone to do it lol

Ambush alley/Force on force is eminently playable solo and solo rules have been posted in the appropriate website ( http://ambushalleygames.com/resources/downloads/31-extras here because linking it is easier done than said :D )

Thank you, but it says that it's for an old version of Ambush Alley. But ambush alley is not available anymore, correct me if I'm wrong ? I just found Force on Force rulebook on their store.
-
the Solo rules are perfectly useable with the current Force on Force. Force on force (new edition) is more or less a repackaged Force on Force plus Ambush Alley (with some specific rules for solo and WW2 games omitted). Basically the addition has some guidelines for the non player forces to act. The core rules have already solo game incorporated.

THanks ! You're speaking of the current FoF rules ?

yes/oui/si/da/ja/hai :D

Thank you a lot for your help !

Last questions :
Are FoF scenarios compatible with any army, or do we have to play USMC for this, british SAS for that, etc... ?
As a french army player is there any advantage buying afghanistan FoF addon ? Same question for the scenarios about army choices.
I' m currently building a full french platoon + a dozen of special forces and vehicles, and about half hundred insurged (to be played both in Afghanistan and Mali, last contemporary french military actions).
-
well the scenarios in the basic books are sort of generic you can simply swap forces with too much troubles (except the one in Grozny I assume...). If you plan to go to A'stan (tabletop version of course), the Enduring Freedom suppelement is a must. While none of the scenarios has any french actions they are interesting on their own, you have a lot of special rules for Afghanistan, a quite well written comment on what was happening there (a tad too much Special Forces oriented IMHO but still valid and informative, the author is a journalist specialized on the subject, he is also appearing here at times). Beside that... the supplement includes also information on French squad and platoon organization and the description of some vehicles.

Thank you for your help. I'll probably add FoF and afghanistan addon on my christmas wishlist, then lol
Today I ordered last vehicles and troops I need for my french forces. There will be some quite interesting conversion work on several french vehicles, especially ;)
Pics soon. :D

Another question (I'm currently basing my minis). What is the typical insurgents unit (if any) in FoF ?
In my insurgent force (planned for Mali and Afghanistan warfare) I've got leaders, RPGs, RPKs, and "regular" insurgent with ak47 minis. I was thinking of converting some of them as regular AK47 insurgents, because I thought I had too much RPKs and leaders for the french game I plan to play,...But maybe not for FoF.
So before converting any mini...I prefer to ask (since Christmas tree FoF book is still a bit far lol).
Last question, how much minis are typically needed for FoF game ?
I've got (or will receive soon) :
the french version of a complete platoon (around 40 soldiers, including 3 APC + 2 light armored "small humvee like" with crews, instead of the 4th apc...I was bored to paint 4 similar APCs so I'll wait for a new vehicle release to complete the platoon), and around 16 special forces operators including 2 long distance .50 sniper teams in ghillie (+ one 4X4 VLRA SAS truck and one light 4X4 P4 SAS vehicle with full crews).
And about 50 insurgents (with about 10rpg, 7 or 8 leaders, 10 RPK, 2 to 4 (2 dragunov and 2 akm with scope) snipers and 2 technicals with MG).
Is it enough for interesting games ?
thank you !

Check out:
http://smallscaleoperations.blogspot.com.au/2011/03/wargaming-moderns-guide-to-start-force.html
You have about enough.
-
thanks, it's exactly the document I was looking for.
Even if US and french army organization differs a bit a squad is called "groupe de combat" and include 2 fire teams called "equipe300m" and "equipe600m" (one team of 3 men with 1 AT4 and one team of 3 men with 1 FN Minimi). I've already got 3 of them.
Concerning insurgents and following this guide, I just have the right amount (more or less) of leaders, RPK and RPGs, finally lol I ordered 2 technicals too, and already have 2 snipers.
THe only thing I will be missing are PKM (I should be able to convert a couple of RPKs I already have) and DSHK teams. But I'll order the DSHK in the same time I order FoF, I think.
EDIT : I realized that I had a DSHK in my spare parts box :) Just have to add a crew. I will make one stand with gunner + DSHK and keep the 2 other crew members on their own base (so I can keep use them for other purposes).
-
The main rule book has the 300m and 600m organisational details. Remember that FoF is scenario driven - so there's flexibility (like in real world situations) in what's in play.
-
THanks,
I ckecked again (using the guide provided), it seems that I'm still a bit short on insurgents for FoF (especially "regular" ak fighters)...But I already blew the minis budget for this month and probably more :-X lol
For OPEX french ruleset, I've got plenty enough minis...Even too much. So, exceptionnaly, I'll try to make my own soup using solo mechanics from diferent rulesets and use wit OPEX. Perhaps in the mean time, a solo addon will be released (it's noticed in the rules as future addon).
Now...Time to paint and convert ;D About 100 minis and around 10 vehicles lol For something I started as simple fast skirmish game project just a few weeks ago, not too bad... Especially when so much other minis are waiting for my attention in both 10 and 28mm lol
-
Still looking for ideas of modern warfare solo ruleset. What do you think about USEME solo rules ? How does it work ? What are the needs concerning miniatures ?
As I explained,
concerning "good guys" :
I've got french version of 1 platoon (around 40 men, 4 APC, 2 light armoured humvee-like vehicles + a dozen of SF with vehicles and helicopter)
Concerning insurgents (afghan style, to be compatibles with both Afghanistan ISAF operation and Mali french operation), I've got :
4 squads (= each squad contains 6 ak47, 1 rpg, 1rpk, 1 leader)
4 technicals (machine guns)
2 snipers
1 antitank/chopper heavyweapon (missile launcher)
+spare minis (2 RPGs, 2RPK, 1 leader, 1 -without weapon but cell phone- "big boss" mini)
What solo ruleset would allow me to play this amount of minis (without any new shopping) ? I thought about Force on Force, but the reports or scenarios I found on internet seems to engage a lot more minis than that. Maybe it's a false idea I have.
Any help will be appreciated. The 2 key points are :
-use the figures I have without needing to buy more (but keeping the games enjoyables...If I have minimal requirements only, I doubt I'll be able to make enjoyable games)
-Real solo rules mechanics, with kind of IA and unpredictability.
thanks for your help.

I finally made my choice, buying Force on Force rulebook, and some cheap soft plastic insurgent reinforcements from Caesar minis (probably 3 sets of modern militia, seems compatible with my Mali/afghanistan insurgents forces)
I was decided to go metal only for this modern warfare project, but I just can't afford it, I already spent too much money lol Going metal only and covering all possible needs (grunts but also weapons types options, etc...) would be too expensive, at least for now.
If someone can confirm that I will have enough minis (for both sides) with this addon, it would be nice. ;)
-
Good choice on rules (common set, many will know or have).
I would follow that document from the previous page for answering if you have enough. It's a fexible system, with inifite scenario possibiities. Short answer - you have enough for games.
-
thank you for your answer,

Regarding this doc especially, I have not enough (on the insurgents force), that why I was worried and why I made the choice of cheap plastic reinforcements, since I'm broke. lol
-
Ratios, my boy. Ratios. Modern warfare has few rules; same with modern wargaming. It's your game - you won't be doing anything wrong if it's a little different.
And trust me, the insurgents recycle pretty quickly.
-
Thank you for your help. ;)
I've got good news also, my brother today went to home and asked me what I wanted for Christmas... lol
-
Hi,
I finally made a very reasonable choice. I bought (or to be more specific, I ordered and my brother paid as my christmas gift lol) one Caesar plastic minis set for most of the reinforcments I still needed, and added some Elhiem metal specialists that were not available in plastic (like DSHK crew, at5, etc...).
I still need to order Force on Force. And then I'll be officialy broke lol
