Quite a while back I painted my German troops for this project, but the British have been sitting in a box for a while. I'm starting to dig them out (they may also be pressed into service for VBCW), and have begun with some Indian troops in hopes of getting this restarted:

I still have lots more to go, but feel free to stop by the blog to see what I have so far.

Love the figures, paint and period! Whats not to love about German East Afrika! ;) Who makes the turbaned figures? Maybe sometime I'll get my guys up to the bay for a battle...what rules?
Bill
-
Those are Copplestone figures from their back of Beyond Range. Their British figures run a bit bigger than the Brigade, so mixing both is going to be tricky. Luckily the Germans are closer in size.
Chris
Edit: For rules I'm going to try "Contemptible Little Armies". I don't know anyone else up here who is interested in DOA, and the rules seem like they are simple enough that I could teach people on the fly for a pick up game.

Hi Chris,
I'm in the SF Bay Area and have a huge 19th century Darkest Africa collection. I also have a huge pile of unpainted WW1 in Africa stuff that is unpainted only due to my lack of an opponent! Have all the Contemptible Little Armies rules too. Where are you located? I am in Burlingame. Drop me a PM if you are interested in connecting for a game...

Hi Steve,
My project stalled out as well for lack of an opponent, so it's nice to know someone else in the area has an interest. I live in west San Jose (about 10min from Game Kastle), but work in SSF, so am in your neighborhood on weekdays. I'd love to get a game together if we can work it out. I bought the second edition of the rules with the Africa supplement, but haven't actually played them yet. So I'm not married to them if you have another rule set you like better. I'll send you a PM.

Nice looking figures. If I were to game WW1, I'd do Africa as opposed to the trenches of Europe. :)

I find 1914 to be attractive if you do earlier in the year.
Gracias,

You did a great job on these little fellows. I like the sailors the most.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I'm now back with some Masai scouts for the British forces:

The Masai are absolutely beautiful, outstanding job!
-
Indeed. Great job on the shields in particular. I know from experience than can be a little tricky.
-
Lovely rich colours on those shields :-*
cheers

haven't seen so many nicely painted Massai in a while...
-
Thanks for the positive feedback everyone. I have to admit that the shields were a bit of a mental challenge. There didn't seem to be a lot of variety in Masai shield design elements, so it was difficult not to get too repetitive on the designs and still get the variety I wanted (while still looking historically plausible). However, I have to admit they were the most fun to paint out of my troops so far.

Oh wow, great looking masai. :)

I'm getting ready for a colonial African game next weekend, so have finished some European settlers:

Great stuff Major! Makes me want to put down the Dark Ages stuff I'm doing now and breakout my box of 100 foundry Masi! Yours are an inspiration!
I just got too ask am I wrong or is your you "avatar" a picture of a British officer? He looks alot like a young Kaiser Wilhelm....? ;)
Checked out your website, nice stuff! do you go to Kublicon? a few of us are thinking of making the trip this year from So Cal.

That is he, King of Prussia, Emperor of Germany and Centre Forward (and lead singer) for the Kaizer Chiefs, but you are also correct in that he was a British officer, as well as being Kaiser. A field marshall and colonel of some regiment of dragoons or other. Possibly an admiral too, wouldn't surprise me. :)

Ehrenoberst des Königlich Großbritannischen 1. Dragoner-Regiments
Königlich Großbritannischer Feldmarschall
Königlich Großbritannischer Ehrenadmiral der Flotte
These are the British titles only...

Yep, that is the Kaiser. I was looking for an old photo of someone with very impressive facial hair and that moustache sold me (and much of my dad's family were immigrants from Prussia, so I thought it was a nice fit).
I usually don't make it to cons these days; I have young kids at home and it's hard on my wife if I disapear for a whole weekend. Plus, with budget limitations, I'd rather spend my cash on lead.

Back with some more figures. These are porters from from Old Glory's Darkest Africa line, and I have to say the quality of these figures is terrible:
With quite a bit of work put into them, I think they will look acceptable on the table, but never great.
Anyway, if you want the details on my complaints, feel free to visit the blog:

The painting looks good, but I can see why you're not as happy as you could be.

Thanks! I have a fair amount of Old Glory figures and they can be hit or miss. I think these figures definitely fit in the "miss" category. The sculpts might have been acceptable in the 70's/early 80's, but not with the quality of figures available today.

Oh, my giddy aunt!
There is some wonderful stuff in this thread, with those Masai being the cherry on the cake.
:-* 8) :-*
Brilliant, sir, just brilliant.

Good stuff Joe,I always look forward to your postings .

Very good :)

Thanks Everyone!

You're right, the Copplestone WWI Indian and British are huge compared to the Brigade Games and Darkest Africa Ranges. Don't get me wrong, they are solid hefty wargame figures that are exquisite, only they're too damn large. I wonder what scale they are in? They certainly can beat up my Surens with no problem.
-
Outstanding work all around.
I have been following your posts.
Just went back to your blog and reread all your posts.
A lot of time and thinking about what you wanted to do.
A true labor of love.
Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic collection. Particularly liked the Masai.
