I created a mold for some shipping containers a while back. I spent a bit of cash on getting some resin to make them up as basically just a shell, I had an insert for a two piece mold. They took up 90mls of resin and 950gms cost me about $70 NZ. So recently I bought a 20kg bag of building plaster for $17NZ. A one piece mold of these things takes up 300gms of plaster. So I should be able to make 60 of these from the bag, if not a lot more. They have a huge amount of bubbles in them though so I thought they would make at great post apoc dock.
This is how many I've made so far, the painted ones are resin.

I'm planning on making one a day at least after work. More in my holidays.

Nice!. Have you tried using the tips from Hirst Art on how to remove airbubbles from his plaster moulds?

as Tony Hirts says, wetting the mold is super-effective against plaster!

Yep, having a tub of water with rinse aid in it to swish your molds in is very handy.

Or just paint the bubbles as bullet holes. lol

I was actually planning on painting the bubbles areas as rust that has eaten away the container. I'm up to Eleven plaster ones now.

The guy who's making my Hirst stuff is using herculite 2 plaster. Its a pretty solid material, and less prone to bubbling than regular plaster according to him (though of all the stuff I've bought off of him I've not found any problems with the casts).
What are your molds shaped like? Are you casting these up as solid pieces, or as say two "L" shaped identical parts (each containing a top/bottom piece, a side, and an end)? For some reason those companies that use resin for their shipping containers seem to go for a single piece, which wastes material and sends the price up. =/

I'm doing these as single pieces. I did originally create these for casting in resin and made two pieces to it. One part of the mould was for the outer and the second part was an insert that cut down on the resin used. So the container is one piece. I'm still casting these pretty much non stop. Once I demould one I out the next in. Takes about three or four minutes per container. Once I have used up all the plaster I t will be quite large. The better plaster costs about four times as much, I may spring for that next time though

Somehow I'm going to make the water for the dock and I have a half container that I made out of the last of my resin.

The half cointainer could be a half in water submerged cointainer to go as an optional terrain piece in the Harbor. Or submerged in sand as a post apo. terrain.

Just what I was thinking. :)
I'm up to 22 containers, resin and plaster. I just made one container to have a bend in it like it has been damaged. It didn't work too well though so I may just scrap it.
I guess I should use some of that cheap spray paint I have to paint these things once they are completely dry. Luckily it's been a hot summer down here so far. I also grabbed some wood stain which should give them a wash quickly. Then I'll just dab some rust over the top, some bits of silver here and there and they should look passable. Still a lot more containers to go though.

These look amazing, I'd love a mold for these, I've even tried convincing first to make one!
