Title: IKEA Painting Lamp?
Post by: cheetor on 10 December 2013, 02:43:09 PM

Can anyone recommend a desk lamp to paint with that is available from Ikea?  Ideally Ikea would also stock suitable daylight bulbs for the lamp.

Any suggestions?  Surely there must be a few LAFers who paint via Ikea illumination?

As someone who works for IKEA, I'd honestly say that unfortunately too many of the bulbs have a strong blue cast to them, making them unsuitable for painting.

I do own and use two TERTIAL work lamps and they are awesome for general work (I have an OTT-lite for painting). Had them for years and they've held up to regular abuse, two house moves, and my kid playing with them. I use GE Daylight incandescent bulbs in them though.

I bought a fantastic poseable lamp from IKEA a couple of years back for £5. It was massively reduced, firstly because it was discontinued, and secondly because it was the last one in the store. The bulbs were about the same price as the lamp itself, but I found a stockist who sold the daylight bulbs for the same price as an ordinary one. I'm still on the first daylight bulb so an investment, it's not a bad one.

'Tertial' looks like a decent work lamp for a good price, for clamping onto a convenient surface.

I have one of those Tertial lamps with a day light bulb that I use for taking photos. One thing to watch out for, even on very short use time the metal bulb hood/cowl/whatever its called gets very hot. Otherwise, recommended  :)

Thanks for all of your help guys.  At €9.50 the Tertial lamp seems like the obvious choice.

Can any of you recommend an online seller of compatible daylight bulbs?  Bayonet fitting bulbs are the norm here (Ireland) and I have trouble finding the right wattage daylight bulbs with the appropriate screw fitting locally.

Is this the right size?

Just give it a quick Google and it shouldn't take you too long.

Wouldn't you know it, Ikea Canada doesn't appear to stock that Tertial lamp with the table-edge clamp... they have lots of nice looking swing-arm work lights, but not a single one in stock at Ikea Canada appears to clamp, they've all got big bases instead.

I have a pair of swing-arm lights, one clamped to either side of my painting/modelling table, each with a daylight-balanced CFL putting out the equivalent of 120W. Both of them are broken in different ways, though, and I've been shopping around slowly for replacements for a while now.
