I’m planning a demo game for 2014 and given that it is the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of WW1, my choice of period is fairly predictable. There’s a really excellent scenario in the Two Fat Lardies ‘Stout Hearts and Iron Troopers’ book called Race to the Sea. In this the Germans and the British are advancing along opposite sides of a canal to the small town of Dampf, the object being to seize the bridge crossing the canal, starting with small forces and getting additions dependent on which card is drawn in any turn. The players find they have a choice between dashing along the road to get to the town (there’s movement penalties for moving off-road in a rather soggy field system) and shooting to disrupt the opposition as they try and do the same thing. My team have played this before and found it gave a nail-biting little action with some tricky decisions – obviously using Mud and Blood rules from the Lardies.
Luckily we have most of the troops required and can field British, Belgian and French forces as alternatives to face off against the ‘orrible ‘un.
I need to finish off the French and create the terrain – all in time for the Tunbridge show in February (or 1st Partizan). If LAF will permit, I’ll show progress here – the photo shoot should shame me into finishing in time.
The main boards are 9mm MDF with Craftfoam on top to provide the contours (I have a sneaking megalomaniac plan to join up with other terrain boards I’ve made for 1914-40 and create a sculptured terrain that runs 30x6 feet and can only be used once before I give myself a hernia):
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m246/leviedtroop/1914T24_zps60c20715.jpg) (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/leviedtroop/media/1914T24_zps60c20715.jpg.html)
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m246/leviedtroop/1914-2-1_zps29ba5014.jpg) (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/leviedtroop/media/1914-2-1_zps29ba5014.jpg.html)
The assumption is Dampf is built in a low-lying border region between France and Belgium, with a canal running straight through it. So the roads and town are raised 10mm above land, which is 10mm off the canal surface:
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m246/leviedtroop/1914T32_zpsb5192156.jpg) (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/leviedtroop/media/1914T32_zpsb5192156.jpg.html)
The town layout has been varied a little from the original town map in SH&IT, mainly because I can’t follow instructions. The principle objective has been to ensure that the buildings form obstructions to sight and cover from fire, without providing too many ‘strongpoints’ that would make an ambush easy, so there’s been much fiddling around with the buildings. The sudden decision to buy the Total Battle Terrain French Church also meant some jiggery pokery to make it all fit. The final layout looks broadly like this (the white straight line is the canal and not necessarily indicative of my inability to measure):
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m246/leviedtroop/1914T37_zps451c7b65.jpg) (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/leviedtroop/media/1914T37_zps451c7b65.jpg.html)
The buildings will be a mix of scratchbuilt, heavily modified dolls houses, Fenris Games, partly modified Oshiro Terrain and straight out of the box Total Battle Terrain, with quite a few ideas stolen from this site (Thunderchicken especially). More on them next update.

That's going to be really impressive when done, looking forward to more updates 8) :-*

If you need some more bits or modding drop me a pm :)

Normandie Ferme
First building, based on a typical farm/barn at Grandieu. Slightly delayed by wine, food and wenches over the holiday period.
Basis is two Warbases buildings (Terraced House and Red Lion – just because I had them to hand) as the carcass but I don’t like the dimensions for their windows and doors, so the building was clad in card, new windows and doors came from Fenris Games except the big barn doors which were scratchbuilt. Interior detail from card, balsa and Slater’s plasticard. The building was then covered with scraps of card and paper to represent loose, rough stonework, washed with FoamCoat. Tiles are Warbases laser-cut paper - I did try to model a small bow to the roof line, not sure it's emphasised sufficently.
Renegade figure for scale.

Thanks for the nice words folks.

this for Bovvy?
If they let us back :)
Aiming for Partizan as the first outing - was hoping for Tunbridge but it's not physically possible. Of course, if I'd started earlier.... lol
-
Missed this up until now, I am very impressed. That is going to be one heck of a board when you're done. Teddy bear fur for the waterlogged fields of Flanders, perhaps?
I keep meaning to re-create the "Race to the Sea" scenario in some soggy part of Russia using my RCW figures, but haven't gotten to it quite yet. I've filed the serial numbers off a number of the scenarios in SH&IT to use as Russian Civil War fodder, but not the Dampf one so far!
-
Looking good, making the trip to Partizan these days depends on if I have things to deliver or the display games that interest me. This is one reason to go, just need a few more.
-
Teddy bear fur is being accumulated - I couldn't do without it lol
Phil - Hopefully we can tempt you further with:
Le boucher, le boulanger et le fabricant de bougies
I was aiming for a very French provincial look with a nicely mixed roofline for the Dampf High Street - this row is based on three different Petitie Properties kits:
http://www.petite-properties.com/
All three are bookshelf models and therefore have no detail on the rear so this needed to be built up. The candlestick maker’s shop is heavily modified with a new Finecast plasticard front and back and Grandt Line windows, as is the corner baker’s shop . Chimney pots from S&D Models:
http://www.sanddmodels.co.uk/index.htm
The butcher’s shop was used pretty much as is, with additional plasticard and yes I need to replace the door, which managed to lean to the right during gluing. There’s a little fettling to be done before they are finally ready for painting and I’ve kept the windows and shopfronts separate for the moment.

La dernière maison sur la gauche
Based on any number of French brick built houses. The basis is a Warbase terraced house, covered in a first layer of plasticard and then textured with Finecast plasticard. Windows and doors are Grandt Line, dormers are Fenris.
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m246/leviedtroop/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/left4_zpsd74cd5de.jpg) (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/leviedtroop/media/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/left4_zpsd74cd5de.jpg.html)
I added stone lintels and quoins made from Warbase roofing tiles trimmed back as the building looks very plain without these -and it matches the source photos. I’ll put the windows in after painting, with a paper set of curtains inset behind them.
An (exploded) back view :
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m246/leviedtroop/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/left7_zps3bac28db.jpg) (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/leviedtroop/media/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/left7_zps3bac28db.jpg.html)
The lintels are plainer around the back, why waste money on good stonework when it can’t be seen from the road ? I’ll add guttering and probably window shutters after the main brickwork is painted.

Great stuff 8) 8)

Le bloc du La Grenouille et Peach (the block of the Frog and Peach)
French estiments were a combination of pub, hotel, restaurant and brothel, of great value to the various nationalities that marched through, or were billeted in, the local town. This block took a bit of time to get here and it still needs a little fettling, but I’ll take a break and shift to a couple of other buildings.
The usual modelling approach, Petitie Properties with the rear built up via plasticard (and Grandt Line windows/Doors to be added) , plus a few bits of MDF scratching.

Roofs are removable but I was tempted to try making the front of each building detachable to allow ease of access. In the end I think it will look better if the main body of the building is a single block – there’s a bit of a compromise between playability and looks. However I’ve done brief interiors for each floor so that if you look carefully through the windows there will be a slight ambience.

Jaw-droppingly amazin project, looks absolutely fabulous! :-*
Will follow this keenly 8)

That greenhouse is superb

Really lovely models :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
And quite a project too!

Looking forward to seeing the end-result, this is inspiring.
I see the houses are slightly over-scale for 28mm figures, being 1/48 scale but not too much - how do they compare to,say, 4Ground or Sarissa buildings? That VBCW project is beckoning again!

I must confess to mixing scales liberally - most houses are 1/48th (but the Chateau - yet to come - is 1/56th), the brickwork is scaled for O gauge, some architectural detail is 1/43rd and the plastic windows are 1/64th. A couple of the 1/48th petite properties kits are clearly squeezed to provide a smaller footprint. As long as it looks broadly right I think the eye is fooled.
I did some test shots on all the buildings I have

The figures are all Renegade WW1 (tending to the 28mm heroic size).
On the whole I think all the buildings fit closely enough, although I have altered the doors/windows on the Warbases models to be more compatible with the others (my eye sees them as a little squashed in comparison).
It's worth having a close look at real buildings - they really vary in size, even on such basic things as doors, often depending on age.

Gets better and better.... very inspiring so please keep posting!

That's a very convincing mix.
Reminds me a great deal of early 19th century Montreal. Particularly around the West side of McGill University heading into Westmount.

Thanks for all the kind comments gentlemen, they keep me warm during the long nights wrestling with MDF and plasticard ;)
9. Ferme de confort froid (Cold Comfort Farm)
Needed a second farm to provide some cover for the allied troops as they enter the table, been working on this while the others dry. Just needs a lick of paint. And bedding into a base. And some set decoration. Oh, and chimney pots and ridge tiles. And the lead flashing for the rain gulleys. But apart from that.......

Just 4 weeks left to Salute but do I panic? Damn right I do lol
10. L'église du Sacré Purge Coeur (The Church of the Sacred Bleedin’ Heart)
This one’s cheating, I had drawn up plans for a church I wanted to scratchbuild but then I saw Total Battle Terrain’s French church and realised it looked very similar and was far better than I could do. Just a rubble base to add to it as it comes battle damaged (those damned boche and there random artillery shells!). As it came ready made it had a head start and is mostly painted . But if anyone has any suggestions for handling the window glazing, I’m all ears.
And yes, I noticed the 2 pieces of ply scrap stuck to the front - but only after I'd photographed it!

What an awe-inspiring effort! :o Love the whole idea and realisation so far.
If you hadn't hinted at the ply scrap being a mistake, I wouldn't have noticed. Perhaps turn it into something "useful", makeshift signs or a bill-board (with papers advertising the banns?) maybe.
Anyway, please keep us posted. Only a few steps further – good luck! :)

11. Chateau (The Big House)
The last building to be required for this set up - Fenris Games ‘Griffin House’. I was rushing a bit and screwed up the roof – note to self, start this stuff earlier. Hopefully once it’s painted and in place it won’t be too obvious. Great kit to build, now I’ve done it I fancy another one.

Just realised that I had all the buildings on the work table at once, so all together now:
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m246/leviedtroop/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/1914T39_zpsc867bbf7.jpg) (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/leviedtroop/media/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/1914T39_zpsc867bbf7.jpg.html)
The brick buildings in bottom left are at painting stage 3 of 5, the rest of them at stage 1, the barn, church and farm house are nearly complete. Still a way to go!

Oh wow, that's a quite a spread now. Those buildings have really turned out well. Nice details and textures all round!

The last update before Salute – 16 buildings, 9 terrain boards and 1 bridge completed, the Mud and Blood cards and big labels produced and printed, player briefings ready with 24 hours to spare.
There’s a number of unforced errors in here I should fix (check the wine merchant's door!) and the buildings need more clutter to make them a little more lived in but hopefully the overall effect on the day should be ok. Perhaps I'll see some of you there and there'll be photos of the full set up on the day (Fred's conservatory wasn't big enough to get the whole lot into one photograph)for those who can't make Salute.

It was you was it! I had been blaming the kids getting messy at school.
Your buildings are looking great - the flowers and other little touches around the bottoms of the walls really help make them look more natural. Have a great game at Salute.

I won't be able to wander around due to stall minding so would there be a chance of plenty of board photos :D

A really great Salute, spent so much time talking to various punters while running the game that my voice has now virtually disappeared :-X
My photos look rather poor, I'll need to sort them out tomorrow, but in the meantime a Monsieur Daguerre passed on one of his snaps:

Good to meet up with you Geoffb, and with many others. It would be a good social event if it wasn't for all these messy wargames :)
Salute Update
The setup:
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m246/leviedtroop/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/DSC_0091_zpscde2c10f.jpg) (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/leviedtroop/media/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/DSC_0091_zpscde2c10f.jpg.html)
The game requires the ‘Orrible ‘Un to advance from the chateau in the foreground to sieze the bridge in the town of Dampf, while the ‘Brave Little Belgians’ advance from the road on the right, on the opposite bank of the canal try to do the same thing. Shooting across the canal is always at long range so the players have to balance the desire to slow down the opposition with high risk shots with the desire to advance into the town but take casualties along the way:

My collaborator on this is Baron Hardup, he provided the figures and the pissoir – possibly the most photographed item on the board.
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m246/leviedtroop/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/DSC_0113_zpsbd10d7f3.jpg) (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/leviedtroop/media/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/DSC_0113_zpsbd10d7f3.jpg.html)
He also provided the Taube, a little aerial recce for the random artillery bombardments:
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m246/leviedtroop/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/DSC_0128_zpsd58c7da4.jpg) (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/leviedtroop/media/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/DSC_0128_zpsd58c7da4.jpg.html)
Second most photographed item, the dog peeing on the statue:
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m246/leviedtroop/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/DSC_0110_zps507ef31d.jpg) (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/leviedtroop/media/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/DSC_0110_zps507ef31d.jpg.html)
The Germans had been very slow to assault the town but finally worked out what their Uhlans were for and charged them straight down the road into the town:
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m246/leviedtroop/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/DSC_0132_zpsa4f57cce.jpg) (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/leviedtroop/media/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/DSC_0132_zpsa4f57cce.jpg.html)
Unfortunately too late to prevent Sgt Fantome, who had commandeered a scout car, put his men in and with a few boxes of dynamite on the back seat drove into Dampf without being fired at once by the Germans and succeeded in blowing the bridge!
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m246/leviedtroop/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/DSC_0141_zpsa2f4f522.jpg) (http://s106.photobucket.com/user/leviedtroop/media/France%201914%20-%20race%20to%20the%20sea/DSC_0141_zpsa2f4f522.jpg.html)
Another member of our team had a Grandfather, Ernest Wilson, who won the DCM for courage under fire in WW1 – he had the medals and other items framed for the game and the citation reads:
‘Sergeant Ernest Wilson, D.C.M.: " When all the company officers had become casualties, he collected his men together and assisted to garrison a very important strong point, and succeeded in beating off repeated German counter-attacks. Later, when surrounded and overwhelmed by great numbers, he and his garrison were driven from their positions, whereupon he rallied his men, attached them to another unit, and helped to recapture the position." ‘

That is a magnificent table!
I'm definitely going to take inspiration from this and adapt "Dampf" lightly for my Russian Civil War figures and scenery - the only bridge across some random canal or stream somewhere on the flanks of one of the many advances or retreats across Russia during that time. Probably make it my 2015 convention game, as the more I think of it the more Dampf is an ideal convention game - funnelled movement, definite clearcut choices for the players to make, etc.
-
Lovely stuff :-* :-* :-* :-*
Did you take any action pics?
Darrell.
-
Superb stuff :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Wirelizard - it should work perfectly well for RCW, in fact in my post-Salute enthusiasm I'm painting up some resin RCW buildings and might try one out myself. Love to see pics of your game.
Darrell - I'll see what I can sort out, sadly during the action my hands shook so much most pics look decidedly ropey - I need a veteran war photographer!
-
That is pretty stuff! Richard

Weeks after Salute and this project still blows me away as much as it did on the day...with all due respect the photos simply don't do it justice....even though you won't remember me thanks for giving your time and what was left of your voice as you explained various aspects of the modelling...just superb
