Title: Book Review: Romans, a photobook
Post by: Mad Doc Morris on 23 December 2013, 12:35:51 PM
If it's not too early – first and foremost a Merry Christmas to all fellow LAFers! :)

I'm taking a break from all things wargames-related at the moment. But for the holidays I indulged myself with a special present: Romans/Romeinen, a hefty tome on reenactors of the Roman period. This covers my great interest in reenactment and my love for high-quality books – but it may well be of general interest for wargamers as well. Therefore I've written a review which can be found here (http://wp.me/p3dOwv-e2) on our blog.

Apart from my ramblings there are a couple of (badly lit) pictures taken from the book. If you can't stand me blabbering on, simply scroll down to the summary. ;)
Not to spill the beans, let's just say I'd recommend a closer look to everyone with some interest in the Roman period (and army in particular) – or those still in search of a nice present for a Roman nut.

Thanks for watching – C&C always welcome, of course! :)

Thanks, Doc, for that very lovely review, it isn't too wordy or useless at all. My first thought seeing some pics was "I really have to buy it!". But after reading I now think it's maybe not that good because apart from being a shiny book it seems to be above all a haphazard bunch of photos with very less background informations. Though I agree the horses pictures seem to be more than excellent.

Anyway, thank you for this great service it is great to see you staying in touch. I hope this is not the last review.

Well, likely some inclination to reenactment/living-history is required here. Unfortunately, no book by Marcus Junkelmann seem to have been translated into English – otherwise these would be the definite alternative for any non-German speaker interested in an in-depth account on reconstructing Roman equipment.

axabrax, best get it directly from the publisher or an European distributor like Karawansaray. At the moment it seems to be available on Amazon.com as well (LINK (http://www.amazon.com/Romans-Clothing-North-west-English-Edition/dp/9081450042)).

Btw, for all those gladiator fans out there: gladiatorial combat takes up some pages in the book, too. Admittedly, though, their equipment's obviously made for stage combat. But there you go.

It's a brilliant book and by far my favourite on the Romans. No words lots of pictures, perfect.
Improved my painting no end.
