Title: District 9 Shanties and Prawns
Post by: Oldben1 on 23 December 2013, 09:45:17 PM
My first foray into 15mm miniatures!  This turned out to be one of my easiest builds.
One of my favourite sci fi movies from the past few years, I really like the GZG sculpts.
I used basic soldiers for the M.N.U. officers (painted black) and the Ravagers for some Nigerian gang members.
I'm planning on using some different scenarios like smuggling and hostages to flesh out my games.

Lovely stuff. D9 is easily one of my favourite films of the last ten years or so.

Great job!  I'm really itching to get my hands on some of those prawns.  The shanty-town looks great!

Awesome looking board and nice miniatures. I too agree that D9 is probably the best sci-fi movie in at least a decade.

stunning buildings but I would half your board to crowd them in slum style. It will make the game a very nasty close range firefight too.

Either that or double the amount of buildings. :D

Did you make those buildings yourself?

Very nice buildings! Just... aren't they too big to be in 15mm? a normal shanty is 2-3 meters tall, so approx 2-3 cm if in scale!
They look splendidly on 28mm though!

They were actually designed to be used for both!  I hacked up a bunch of little boxes for the basic shapes.  I then covered them with different types of craft paper and bits of junk.  I primed them brown and dry brushed like crazy.  I then added some ink washes using different types of wood stain.  My favourite part is collecting all the posters and labels, from cat food, to soccer posters, to District 9 warning symbols.

I know the shanties in District 9 were smaller but I'm trying to maximize my terrain.  And here I thought no one would notice ::)

ok, in that case a double kudos! :)

I've been starting my own D9 project since a while, in this thread:

Wow, I missed YouR thread the first time.  Your shanties are really good.  I like the paint/ chip technique.  Very realistic.  Unfortunately beyond my skill level, but something I'd like to try later.
