Title: Lead Apocalypse - PA painting club
Post by: Silent Invader on 01 January 2014, 02:33:16 AM
A new dawn, a new year, a new painting club!

Following on from the Ancients Painting Club, the Pulp Painting Club, the Medieval Painting Order and the Old West Painting Posse, it’s now the turn of the PA Board:  welcome to the LEAD APOCALYPSE.

The LEAD APOCALYPSE will work much like its predecessors: all LAFers are invited to join by painting an eligible miniature and posting it in the club gallery.  So paint and enter just one eligible miniature and you become a member of the club.

Can I paint and submit more than one miniature?  Of course you can!  But you can only post one miniature a day (though your image can be a composite from several different angles, etc.).  As there’s no rush to finish, please enter with freshly painted minis, not photos of old PJs.

The club will be open for 99 submissions, so when the 99th slot is filled with the image of the 99th mini, the club will close.  And why 99?  From the apocalyptic anthem “99 Red Balloons” by Nena (1983), of course.

Ninety-nine dreams I have had
Every one a red balloon
Now it's all over and I'm standin' pretty
In this dust that was a city

YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14IRDDnEPR4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14IRDDnEPR4)

A slight change of emphasis from other painting clubs: rather than being open to all aspects of the PA world, in tune with the lyrics this time round the subject matter is restricted to mankind.  More specifically, to qualify the PA miniature must be of a single PA human (or an obvious derivative thereof).  We’ll accept any of the following:

Any scale is acceptable.

If absolutely necessary, you can include connected vehicles, monsters, robots etc. in your image but the submission’s intent and focus must still be of and on the single human (or human derivative) mini (for example, a vehicle driver).

Please note that all minis must also be in a finished state, including basing, etc., albeit with one exception: for minis to be based in groups, it’s fine to submit them one by one without a finished base, though a concluding picture of the final result would be very welcome.

To make a submission, add a post to the bottom of this thread, being sure to number your entry and adding your image in the normal way.  I will then copy the image into the Gallery and subsequently revise the image address in your post.  This way we will ensure that all images reside in the Gallery in the correct order.  (Method revised 01-01-14)

As the club proceeds along its journey, I shall maintain a list of members.

And what do members get?  Well aside from the shared camaraderie, the sense of achievement and a reduced lead pile..... they get a badge.  Not a real badge (what, you thought we had a budget?!) but a virtual badge to tack onto your LAF signature line.

Please note that you may only add the badge if your name is ‘on the list’ (for which see below).

To add the badge, just copy and paste the following code into your signature, in your profile:

This code:
Code: [Select]
[img width=50 height=50]http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/16/2031_01_01_14_3_06_57.JPG[/img]
Will look like this:

The LEAD APOCALYPSE will end when the 99th miniature is posted.  There’s no rush though, we’ll get there when we do.

So the emergency news broadcast has ended, the klaxons are sounding and rockets shriek overhead.   Muster your paints and brushes, prepare your minis, it’s time to start the LEAD APOCALYPSE.

The freshly irradiated, somewhat scabby and downright hungry members of the LEAD APOCALYPSE comprise:

To kick off the club, my first submission to the LEAD APOCALYPSE is one of my own minis, an assembly from the miniatureMOJO 'multipart zombie rager pack'.

He's in the style of a recently infected from the French movie 'Mutants'.

And so another Painting Club begins.....

A great start by you fellas.
Nice Rager, Steve.
Another great addition to your range,

Anpu: That fella is really well painted, with the shirt only just topping the jeans for realism.
 :-*

I think that I may just have a couple of things that I can paint up for this, too.

Excellent. Perfect timing as PA has been on my mind to revisit lately so a great excuse to paint something. Great first entries guys. Hope I make it back home from my parents in time to enter.

But I haven't finished painting Old West figures yet!  :D

I'm sure I can squeeze a PA figure in; maybe one of those lovely SSS ones!

I've had some good advice on managing gallery images and so have made a change to the submission process, which is now as follows:

To make a submission, add a post to the bottom of this thread, being sure to number your entry and adding your image in the normal way.  I will then copy the image into the Gallery and subsequently revise the image address in your post.  This way we will ensure that all images reside in the Gallery in the correct order.  (Method revised 01-01-14)

In other words, please don't try to post to the LEAD APOCALYPSE Gallery directly.

I have revised the OP.

I used the holiday from work today to finish off this model:

It is a club... if there are less members it is more exclusive.  ;D

But, hey, don't fret, I'll stop posting any more figures... I liked how this was motivating because there was a finite deadline and a sort of 'race to the end'-feeling about it, but if people are getting the 'I had a sip of sour coffee'-look from it, then I guess it's not that important.  :)

I was inspired by the topic but didn't have any good PA models to hand. I did have some Gripping Beast Dark Age warriors on the table, though, and their scruffy beards and puttees made me think they could work. This is a GB plastic warrior with the backpack from a Warzone Bauhaus militia model. I've also given him a tommy gun, made by Hasslefree, which I had sitting in my bits box.

Fellow LAFers, folks, chaps, guys, peeps, gentlefolk....

A brief refresher from the LEAD APOCALYPSE rules:

Quote
Can I paint and submit more than one miniature?  Of course you can!  But you can only post one miniature a day (though your image can be a composite from several different angles, etc.).  As there’s no rush to finish, please enter with freshly painted minis, not photos of old PJs.

This is a miniature painting club, not an army painting competition as is the LPL, an intention of which is to motivate fresh painting.

Assuming a member is freshly painting each mini (yes, I know it's open to interpretation but we are gentlefolk who conduct ourselves in the spirit, so we don't need a written rule for everything, do we?) then multiple entries over a series of days are permissible.

Yes, this will reduce the number of slots available to members but I really do not want to cap contributions as this would be at odds with how and why the Prof launched the inaugural league, one reason for which was to show a number of minis he was painting over the course of a week.

In terms of the number of slots, 99 is what we have and they will fill at their own pace, whatever that is.  These clubs tend to be about the 100 mark and we have our 99 red balloons theme.  The slots are filling quickly but the pace might drop, or it might not.

Anyways, it is Sunday: a great day for painting and maybe photography  ;)

Love this.  :D

Wait, I've managed to miss this whole topic until now. An all-caps title always makes me assume it's drive-by blog or commercial spam because actually contributing members have read the forum rules and know better. :o

Thanks, everyone! I am surprised how OK it looks, actually -- I hate seeing a fantasy or historical figure sci-fied up by just having guns stuck on it; it never looks right. So I was pleased that this one seemed to come out.

Thanks.

Incidentally, this will be my only entry mainly due to the fact that, although I have a squad to do I just won't have the time.  If this fact leaves more "slots" for others, that's a bonus.  I like to see other painter's stuff.   :)

Just got around to watching the French flick: Mutants as sujested by Silent Invaders first post (...apoc...) and liked it quite a bit. A good, gritty bit of zombie fun without the wet fish of zombies slapping my face...worth a look if you enjoy screaming, running, biting and various bodily fluids...which I'm sure most of you do.

Also, great stuff everyone! Looking forward to seeing more.

Great new entries  8)

I still can't seem to unsub to threads??  Any moderator help?

Each thread has a notify button to activate the notify option.  Selection of the notify button will send you an email when a new post is added to the thread. Deselection will allow you to end email notifications.

I would imagine that the thread notify process takes precedence over your global notification settings, which can be found in your Profile under Notifications & Email.

There's also the Show New Replies to Own Posts / Unread Posts buttons, which will give you a list of what's been posted since your last visit.  You cannot remove this thread from those lists.

Hopefully this will help you out but if there are still website admin problems they should be addressed in the About Forum board, thanks.

Dr Mathias, that is one superb PJ sir!  :-*  :-*

TBC, May I suggest a way forward? I prefer to not recieve more emails, so turn off all email notifications, and rely upon the "Show Replies" function below my Avatar in the top left navigation panel.

My only PA mini left is freshly stripped ready for undercoat - EM4 provided it with a 'thorough' white undercoat that hid a fair bit of detail - so hopefully it will get in a slot! Or we get overrun with zombies... What ever happens first ;)

Cheers
Matt

If it's a Digga I'd say probably yes. Not sure about Orks though. Probably not. The theme is generally human. However I'm not moderator or anything. Just my opinion.

I've thought about it.... heck I even had to research it as I've never played GorkaMorka ....  and my ruling is broadly negative.  PA games (as discussed on LAF) are generally Earth based whereas GorkaMorka's apocalypse occurs elsewhere (in some other solar system?), which in LAF terms makes it science fiction, which belongs in the Future Wars board.

I say broadly negative because there are PA minis that might feature in PA games, Modern games and Future Wars games, so there's clearly some crossover but I'd really like to keep the painting club focussed on entries that are used or collected for this board's intended purpose.

As has been said, the theme here is human (and human derived) so if you have a mini that you think is representative of one of the PA categories in the OP  but you aren't sure if it will be permitted, by all means PM me with an image and I'll give you a definite yay or nay.

 :)

A couple of brief rules reminders:

Entries must be of a single human (or human derivative such as a zombie)..... Machines (such as robots, etc) are ineligible.

Only those on the list are eligible for the badge so, please do not claim it until you have been added.

There can be a time delay between ineligible entries being removed and eligible entrants being added to the list..... I check the thread regularly but there will be lags due to real life (partner, family, sleep, work, other hobbies.....!) so please be patient.

Please see the OP for the complete rules wordage.

I have lost track of if there are any slots left. Anyways meet Cleetus

(48) Cleetus (survivor)

Cleetus always had a hard time fitting in to society. But when the dead started to rise and society colapsed, Cleetus was suddenly free from the constraints of society and he could finally be himself.

The pink tutu turned out really weird in the pictures...

Woah..... I'm away for 12 hours or so and there's a tidal wave of entries  :D

Well done folks... list updated, new members have badges to claim, etc.  ;)

BTW, though - of course - 28mm is the one true 'scale' (even though it's not a scale...) it's good to see a non-28mm entry: the 1/35th survivor by Not Yet Dead in at number 47.

Cleetus is also particularly disturbing.....  :o

We have 99 slots so we are getting close to the half way spot.  Who will claim number 50 and with what?

I seem to have hit a little snag with the badge; my signature says I only have 15 characters left of my 300 limit. This is all currently taken up with painting club badge references. I can see that others have four or more badges so there must be a way round it! Any ideas?

Yep, I agree with you Matt.  8)

Steve:  the badge code is just under a 100 characters so with three already you really are pushing well over the 100 character limit.  I had imagined that those with a full set had photoshopped them into one image but this doesn't seem to be the case.  I'm on my phone so I can't do a 'page source' to look at the code others have used.  So, anyone with a full set: how'd you do it?!  :)

Too right Matt! It's just that slippery Ancients Club that got away from me!

Thanks Steve. I don't have Photoshop but I'm sure there will be a way I can do it, even with my basic skills! I'm more savvy on the CAD side than anything else so a lot of this is a bit over my head!

@badge problem: I saved the badges on my computer, uploaded them to imageshack and used the direct link. this way I could put 4 badges in my signature. A 5th won't fit though  :'(

@painted figs: Awesome stuff again, I'm very tempted by these Eden miniatures...

Sorry Steve I was using photoshop as a general adjective rather than as a specific brand!  :D

A simple image programme like MS Paint is  all you need to cut and paste the 4 images into 1.  See Hammers set of badges as an example.

Alternatively, if you don't have the skills, software or hardware, maybe some kind soul can volunteer their same set of badges for you to copy and use?

Guys,
if you put the code in the signature box, you can delete the heigth/width part as the image is exactly that size.
That way, it takes up way less characters.

Mod interlude: Incidentally, for this painting club we do have a requirement that mutants must be of obviously human form (which this entry certainly is) but if you have a mini and you want to be 100% sure it's human-enough to qualify, just pm me before entering and I'll give you my view. That's a Citadel/GW figure, created for the proto-Necromunda game called Confrontation. His base tab says 'Helmawr Clan' and he's listed as the leader, so he's generally considered to be Lord Helmawr, the planetary governor of Necromunda. I may have an extra. He's a relatively scarce figure.

The Reaper has to be my favourite of  the many brilliant figures displayed so far. The colours are superb, maybe a bit too pristine for a post apocalypse survivor, but the blue of the jeans is perfect. And if the figure on its own was not a superb piece of work the scenery is equally stunning.

Copplestone 'Billy the kid': A minor conversion to add the balloon with wire and Procreate.  It just seemed to be the right thing to do for a PA kid.

I don't know what it is, but it doesn't look happy, so I'm not going to ask!

Mini is Reaper Bones. I'm not sure exactly how I will use it, but my initial intent was as a kind of "special" zombie variant, like you see in Zombicide or Left 4 Dead.

Well, it's not the classical zombie, indeed, actually he has to pull off the mask to be able to bite :)

Lead Adventure Miniature, from pack PA-12 'From the Contaminated Seas 2'. Another desk-haunting malinger from almost two years ago :) I used a brush on flat coat, which came out as a satin/gloss. Nothing but Dullcote for me from this point on :)

Hi to all at the lead adventures thanks for the interest,
The photographs of the mini and grass base doesn't do justice at all :(

But the grass effect was simply a old paint pad, I accidently stumbled on it when painting a room lime green :D.
so I started by saturating the paint pad with brown paint washed with dark brown wash then dry-brushed it with shades of green then finally I dry brushed  2nd to last highlight one way then a final high light another to give light and  shadowy effects  and voila job done.

May I also say a thanks for this forum and this thread, as this thread was the motivation for my slave zombie.

Just now getting time to comment.  Love this thread!  So much good stuff.

That's impressive, I've painted those WGF figures and I wouldn't have guessed you used one as a base.

Thank you very much.  That is an huge compliment to me, considering how much I admire your work.  I'll post a PA thread and some WIP pictures this week.

Loving the Wargames Factory conversion..... Who'd have thought it.   8)

Thanks SI.  Much appreciated.

Ok, it's against "the rules" and I haven't cleared it with the Prof but I do think it fitting that someone with your zombie/PA gaming pedigree is welcome to close this thread with something special.  So, for an honorary LEAD APOCALYPSE badge, the challenge is extended: CV show us your best.

Caveats:
(1) usual club rules apply, a completed and based single figure etc
(2) any LAFers who disagree with my decision please PM me direct so as to keep the thread on focus
(3) time is short!

Steve (mod)

Ok, I for one think that we should close this up at the end of the month. I assumed CV had something ready to post on the day he asked for an exception to the rules of the club that everyone else had to follow....

I'm sorry if my asking we all follow the same friendly guidelines upsets anyone or is taken as a negative, it's not meant to be and I hope it's not taken in that spirit. :D

Chaps  :)

I'm going to leave this open for a bit longer.

The decision to allow an 'honorary' posting was mine.  I for one hadn't anticipated that CV had something ready, so in that respect the comp had closed and the full extent of the rules didn't apply.  That CV has been allowed to close the thread with something does not in any way diminish or detract from the efforts made by the club entrants, which are all appreciated and applauded.  :D

If CV would still like to submit a closing image, then he's very welcome too.  A time indication might help manage expectations.  ;)

Edited to correct misleading wordage !  CV's submission wouldn't be an entry but a closer.
