Here's a start on a French army. They are WW2 models, but I thought to use them for WW1 colonial troops as well (with the addition of some special weapons and so on).

Yes, I know their rucksacks aren't right for WWI, but it's close enough, at least for a start. I'll also start a WW1 German army, probably using Great War Miniatures' Germans.
-
Very nice, although you have stolen my idea!
-
Thank you. I didn't steal it, I copied it. You can still use it. :)

Next up is a couple of artillery pieces. They both have both types of barrels and can thus both be heavy or medium artillery. The crew are the first of some Scarab Miniatures minis.

Next we have more Warlord French, two riflemen, one VB grenade launcher and a LMG with loader.

I used a darker than normal skin tone on most of these, should be fitting if they're French from North Africa.
-
I could easily see these in Moroccan Riff games in the 1920's and 30's. Nice.
-
Looking good!

Where are the artillery pieces from?

Thanks. I hadn't heard of the Rif before. Sounds fun, except I'd have to start another army. ;)
Looking good!
Thanks tomek917!

A guy called Bob Emmerson on the WWPD forums. The moulds for these have been worn out, but he's working on new versions made by 3D printing and resin casting. Previews look good. http://forum.wwpd.net/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=11334

Here are some German Great War artillery crew.

This last pic shows how the "I'm sitting squatting"-guy is supposed to be. ;) These are from Great War Miniatures* and I like them so much I've just ordered five more blisters from them.
*Except the guy to the left who's from Old Glory.

this is really cracking stuff, congratulations!
what Khaki did You use for the uniforms, it looks so greenish?
-
Thank you. :) The French uniforms are VMC English Uniform, AP Strong Tone ink, VMC Green Brown. They may look more green in the photos, flash photography in winter time isn't the best to get good looking pictures...
Finished WWI Germans. I used some new stuff for feldgrau this time, I think I prefer it.

Great looking Germans :-* :-*

VMC is the code for Vallejo?
Yes, with digital photography you never know what tone comes out - Your colour palette is very interesting nevertheless, for the germans too
great project!
I could easily see these in Moroccan Riff games in the 1920's and 30's. Nice.
have You seen pictures of helmets worn in the Riff Wars? I'd be interested
Thanks. I hadn't heard of the Rif before. Sounds fun, except I'd have to start another army.
not necessarily, You could paint SCW moroccon regulares and use them against the french in the Riff war and as what they are in SCW,and as Tirailleurs and dismounted spahis in WW1
-
@marianas_gamer: Thank you!
@former user: VMC is Vallejo Model Color yes. I have a few Vallejo Game Color as well. Thanks. :)

THX
will have to try VMC green brown

A French company called Forgotten and Glorious (http://forgottenglorious.blogspot.fr/) was kind enough to send out free tester models to people. I asked for one of their 1916 French. The model came with a loose head, and very little in the way of mould lines and flash. It's quite tall, 28 or 28.5mm from foot to eye, but not very bulky (looking at the pics on their website I thought they would be bulkier). Here it is with a Great War Miniatures German to the left, and two Warlord Games (WWII) Frenchmen to the right. Especially the Warlord officer is shorter, but I'd still let them join the same army.

These are the last of the current batch of French, though I just ordered some Senegalese Tirailleurs from Woodbine.

They'll get their baptism of fire tomorrow in a 700 point Bolt Action battle. :)

Nice! Great colours!
-
Thank you! :)

Here's a WIP, conversions of Warlord's Blitzkrieg Germans into WWI late war Germans. Not totally finished, the kneeling guy needs some personal equipment for example.

This is a batch of old Foundry early WWI French I picked up for a few quid. Unfortunately some of them had been attacked by lead rot, so I started by trying to remove as much of that as I could before painting. They also had some broken off rifles and so on...
Since I already have late war French I didn't want to paint up yet another era, so I hit on the idea of painting them as the French Foreign Legion. Yes, there are probably a few things wrong, the slouchy type of kepi for example, but on the table top it should be pretty obvious what they're meant to represent.

No, I don't know why I have a lone machine gun loader either...
-
as far as I can tell, they are perfectly OK, up to 1930 north africa, and possibly even longer
-
they are looking good, I like the white/khaki mix.
-
Quite a nice collection you have.
I too like the guns.
Would like to see the French with some field guns larger than 75s.
-
which models would You suggest we use?

I don't know if that question was for me but I'm using 105mm/155mm (same chassis, replaceable gun barrels) cannons from Bob Emmerson.

Thanks guys. :)
More colonial French! These are Tirailleurs Senegalais. Had some varnish problems (don't scrape out the last in the pot guys), but other than that I'm happy with them.

Dragged this thread up from page 10 or whatever it was. Seems that I missed to post a few updates on this forum as well. Oh well.
Anyways, here's a rather big update. :D
I finally finished the big batch of Germans that's been standing on my painting table since winter.
