For some reason, I've been bitten by an unreasonable urge to build an offshore petroleum/gas drilling platform as a piece of skirmish terrain. Absurd, enormous, complicated - you know, all kinds of fun! :D
But for what scenarios could it be used?
I'm already thinking of 7TV, but any suggestions would be welcome.

Dr NO?

Well ii would be a great excuse to use either the Eureka Frogmen or the Lead Adventures German naval divers. You know the war on Terror/Terra thing. Or even the balding cheesy actor who resembles Bruce Willis vs evil doers with mittel Europa accents type thing.
Sounds like a fun project. Just remember that union rules for offshore platforms requires two weeks on, two weeks off, so double the time you have allocated for the project and only work on it every second weekend. :)

Big bad businessman, after having fled his luxurious manor, travels to the root of his monetary power. There the heroes confront him before he, knowing all is lost, blows the containers holding millions of gallons of oil that would contaminate the local area (and cause a blow to the heroes' contractor's finances too). The villain would need to either break a few valves and/or activate a control panel to remove the security measures holding back the oil, whereas it would be up the the heroes to stop him (and possible as a side objective knick a few barrels of oil for themselves).
The heroes have discovered that the oil being sent to their country in fact contains a substance aimed to rot the components of their vehicles (or something). Sent out to track down the source of the contamination they discover the oil rig and confront the big bag over it/ have to retrieve some samples to make sure they're correct and destroy the tainted source.
Those are generic scenarios. Typically I play games that have more of a grey area between the heroes and villains, so where the heroes may be told they're going to stop the villain from releasing tainted oil, in actuality they may just be tools to rid their leader's of a competitor and blag a load of free oil. You could also throw in things like the oil rig being a cover for drilling down and releasing monsters buried beneath the surface/ causing earthquakes by messing with the earth's mantle. The rig could be a cover for the entrance to a hidden base or the stop over for the big bad's helicopters on the way to an off shore base too. It could be that the villains are holding the rig hostage and attempting to blow up its reserves (again grey area, it could be that the oil's being used by bad people and they're getting rid of it to handicap them), or just stealing a load of it.
Lots of things I guess. ;)

arghhh... really need to get moving with mine...

For those who fancy something a little simpler, there's also the ww2 antiaircraft platforms off of the Essex/Kent coast and that Island fort in the middle of Portsmouth (or Plymouth?) harbour.

Dr Who, UNIT vs Sea Devil/Silurians.

I think if you search the forum there is a Drilling platform/oil rig built for Dr Who games.

'Diamonds are Forever' had the US helicopter gunships taking out Blofeld's armed rig platform, whilst Bond and Tiffany raced to escape.
I think 'The Spy who Loved Me' had the submersible rig that could stand above the sea or on the ocean bed, which was also the bad guy's secret base.
You could have an 'Under Siege' type thingy with hostages, but with a vital rig instead of a warship.

Karl @Crooked Dice owns this example, which he had scratch-built 8)

Wow, never saw it before. Great work. Like the Zeppelin made by gamer mac and the stuff made by overlord. I think a terrain gallery with all this beautiful stuff in it would be great.

that is one great bit of modeling, really effective and playable as well

I don't know if 12' off shore...counts as off shore! lol

During Operation Preying Mantis in 1988 US forces attacked a number of Iranian oil platforms in retaliation for (alleged) Iranian mining of the Gulf
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Praying_Mantis
Would be fairly easy to develop some scenarios based on that.

That crooked dice is simply astounding.
