I've been merrily adding to the Sudan collection and as it's a while since I posted any of my finished articles here, I thought I'd add a bumper crop:
Without further ado, we have the Royal Marine Light Infantry

A few more Beja tribesmen and Jihadiyya:

Some Baggara Horse:

As an aside, I'm participating in the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge again (http://analogue-hobbies.blogspot.co.uk (http://analogue-hobbies.blogspot.co.uk)) and you can find my latest there well before it hits my blog. But all in all the Sudan collection is coming along nicely and I hope to put on a game in the Spring.

That's a pass with flying colours, lovely :-*
-
Those look great! Richard
-
Very nice indeed :-*
cheers
James
-
Very nice.
I'm trying not to start on the Sudan and they are making it harder.
-
Fantastic figues. I love the flag - was that hand painted?
-
Nice! :-*
-
Cheers all :) all greatly inspired by work here and elsewhere.
Fantastic figues. I love the flag - was that hand painted?
It is from Flag Dude www.FlagDude.com (http://www.FlagDude.com)
Really dynamic flags, durable and come pre-assembled on steel wire for a reasonable price. My only quibble is the pixelation you can see up close.
-
Beautiful brushwork! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
If I'm to be honest I'm not very into the sabot bases (I prefer vignette style basing- though I know why folk would use them). Having said that, they take nothing away from the excellent painting 8) 8) 8)
Darrell.

and very nice too

Vignette basing is something I'm tempted to have a go at and looks amazing when done right, but I much prefer basing minis first then painting them.
I'm hoping to make some sabot bases in the style of Captain Blood's, which should offer more flexibility in forming up vignettes
@Deedles: Hi, painter of hordes!

Oh, more Sudan bits on my blog too:

Really nice brushwork :-*.

And after a productive end to the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge, plenty more for the collection on my blog http://infrequentwargamer.blogspot.co.uk (http://infrequentwargamer.blogspot.co.uk)
More Mahdists:

Alas, I cannot compete with Deedles in volume. But little steps, little steps. :)
-
Little steps, but great ones :-*
cheers
James
-
Very nice work :-*.
As James said above.... "little steps" :)
Darrell.
-
Beautiful work - really top shelf painting and modelling of some great figures.
Cheers

Beautifully done, especially the Hussars. I have a question though. ??? Is that a Perry Krupps? I have painted mine with brown leather (?) seats for the accompanying gunners whilst yours look to be metal? Are we both in our own ways correct I wonder? I'll have to try and get a picture up (on a new thread, I'm not wishing to hijack your wonderful gallery).

You may be quite right - I couldn't find a good image of what colour the seats should be, so pretty much stuck with the same as the rest of the carriage. Did you find a picture.

I've steadily been beavering away in recent weeks, after an all-too-long to tackle some DIY. Anyways, I've a couple more bits to show you. First, a command stand for the British:
<img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2UGJ1UDOAuQ/U4HxnI55FeI/AAAAAAAADRM/Pi-HD8EpQ88/s400/photo%25201-723473.JPG" height="400" width="347" /> (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/30msUqU7Akc6nivdip4DP6YDhVTx6SyIAaklcWcfmZs?feat=embedwebsite)
And a unit of British Indian infantry: representing either the 17th Bengal or 28th Bombay infantry regiments.

You are most welcome to find bigger pictures and some rambling on my blog, as usual:

Lovely! :-*
-
Great job.
-
I love the sabot bases. I am using the same for my Zulu Wars. Your bases are superb.
-
What a great collection and beautiful painted as well!
Alex
-
Very nice - love all of this. :-*
-
Really great stuff :-*.
Do you know if Warbases or anyone else for that matter does the sabbot bases with the 'holes' for the round mini bases closer together?
I really like the idea of sabbot bases but have so far been put off by the spaces between the miniatures being just a touch too far apart for my liking- that's not to detract from your great work Phyllion!
Darrell.

The warbases ones re about as tight as they could be I think. But there are a couple of options I suppose. O. The easy side, smaller bases - 20mm round should pack the minis tighter.
Alternatively, you could make your own which is the approach I'll be taking with my Mahdists. I've got some Perspex rings from jimbibbly that are just a few millimetres wide. I'll be able to do some 'horde' formations and pack them a bit tighter and more randomly.
-
Great looking miniatures and basing! Could you share which paints/ methods you have used for the bases? As they look splendid.
Cheers

That sounds like the answer to me- Thanks for the answer, I look forward to seeing the Mahdists.

Darrell,
Warbases CAN do them touching. Derek and I got some done like that for our 15mm FIW to depict units in firing line.
Best to draw out exactly what you want on paper, show all measurements. Take a pic and send it to Martin and ask for a sample and a price.
I've just posted a few pics on my blog for you to see one tarted up and with some minis.

Cheers Jack 8), I'll set out a plan ASAP- we've just moved to much nearer my parents to help out a bit more and i'm up to my neck in detritus at present.
I'll check out your blog ASAP too :).

Thanks for the kind words - of course I can do a tutorial though my method has developed over the years into a quite laborious one. I'll post one with pics on my blog when I'm next doing some basing, if that's ok.

Hi Atheling,
I've posted up a build of my own custom sabot bases on my blog:

Glad to help :)
Mahdists look grand 8)

Great looking figure collection. Richard

Fantastic! :o

Hi all,
A writeup of a few games on my blog. All painted, with all the sabot trays finished. Took a while to get there, and more lead to add (after a but of a break from the Sudan, I suspect).

Really good looking game.
We found BP combats a bit odd, with a small difference in the combat, followed by a poor roll on the rout tests, leading to a routed unit. I think you can add a fair bit of extra complexity without breaking the rules.
-
one other thing, do you have some details of how you made the casualty blood splat markers?
-
Wonderful miniatures. Really top notch.

I do, good sir. They are see-through counters from http://www.em4miniatures.com (http://www.em4miniatures.com)
Splodge on red/brown paint and then a couple of layers of Tamiya clear red.

Really easy and fun to make.

Thanks. I hadn't seen the clear counters at em4 before.

If this gun is painted in the authentic colour of the time a lot of us are going to be repainting our models I think!

Ahhh, I'm seeing loads of Sudan inspiration around the Blogoshpere, which reminded me that I've not posted my last few bits up. These were supposed to be the last for a while before starting new projects, but everyone beavering away on their a Sudan collections is making my mouse-finger hover over the perry website...

Lovely stuff.. And I so need to nick the dust behind the horses idea..

Really excellent additions, the cavalry look awesome.

Lovely stuff, what scale is the Egyptian officer? does he look well next to Perry Egyptians?
