Title: Building a Cyberman
Post by: Germy on 18 January 2014, 08:17:44 PM
Following on from previous discussions I've started to build my own Cybermen miniatures, so I thought I'd start a WIP thread.

This was the original test piece.

Updated since than, rough WIP stuff but I've had a rethink on how to do them.

Re-doing the collar after discovering I could bend the green stuff and keep it as one complete piece.
Finished doing the collar and making a first attempt at a mould to make the finish versions.
Will try that now then look at reproducing the head, problem with the handle bars.

Definitely coming together now, head is still going to be a problem.
Not going to be able to cast the head using the siligum method. Either going to have to get it
cast up or do the head in a mould and then have to add the handlebars  :?

They are great, I think they must either have produced millions of sprues or several copies are making them a bit like some of the EM4 plastics. Quite a few eBay sellers have them and very cheap  8)

Made some progress, and had a bit of a set back with the instant mould stuff.

The results from the mould were not great, this was mainly due to using too much putty hence the massive amounts of flash.
Will try making better moulds and reducing the amount of putty.

I did take a first look at the cyber collar on one of Akkie's minis. Need to continue making the smaller collar I reckon.

Also made a smaller head for Akkie's mini's, here it is on the current Cyberbody
(http://www.germy.co.uk/images/projects/cybersmallhead.jpg)

And here is the first attempt at weaponry for the cybermen.

Recreating the head and gun are now my priority at the moment. Could ask someone to cast them up but really want this as a project anyone can recreate. Will keep working at it.

They certainly are!

I have no interest in Dr Who but the foldover 'poncho' type thing gives me an idea for something else....Thank You!

Yes it worked surprisingly well, you could do the same with cloaks and things.

Some progress after sodding about with different techniques to produce moulds.

Guns are being produced ok but cannot cast the head with the handlebars on the top so have started to work out duplicating the head without and will have to make 40 handle bar pieces!

So my initial two with production guns.

The guns have quite a bit of flash on them but it is coming off ok. Switched to Procreate so I can file mould lines off better.

This whole project is going to take longer than expected but unless I find an easier way of duplicating the parts that's just the way it will be.

Update on progress.

First up Akky's troops with the slimmer Cyber collar I made. Heads next then I'll decide whether to change the guns.

To make the collars I made some moulds with that instant plastic stuff.

Before the green stuff sets completely I'm bending them into shape. Sticking them when bent into a draw I can leave them until set.

Happier now that I'm making progress, still a way to go for 40 Cybermen!

Before I ruin these with a paint job I thought you'd like to see what I did with the Assault Trooper miniatures kindly donated by Akky. You can see the original minis onAkky's Blog (http://akulasgalacticarmies.blogspot.co.uk/)

Loving the Halfords Grey Primer these days, it does make everything look like a render though!

I did these in addition to the 40 (possibly 50 now  ) other Cybermen in production for a game later in the year. For these miniatures I made a different head and collar and with not getting to my club yesterday I put a bit of hobby time to get them finished ahead of schedule.
Had a few wobbles about the size of the head and whether I needed to swap out the weapon but think they came out quite well in the end. Even decided to add a bit of pipework running from the front collar unit like the original the design is based on.

Going to test painting silver on these but will eventually paint these black as a small force of Stealth Cybermen  8)

It's useful stuff but it takes practice to get the most out of it. I will try and add a proper wip page to my website showing how I used it.

Just made a teaser trailer for my up and coming Cybermen vs Daleks game that I'm putting on for my clubs open day.
Cybermen Teaser (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fntabZ4air8)  8)

Just need to build the remaining 40+ Cybermen and sort the rules out.
The game will be exclusively run at the Maidstone Wargames Society Open Day (http://www.brigademodels.co.uk/mws/ClubStuff/OpenDay2014/OpenDay2014.html) which is on the 28th June this year.

Progress, the Cyber Legion has been undercoated. This is a stage I really like as it masks all the bits of modelling/conversion work to a complete miniature.

And spent today putting on the first coat of silver.
No idea what to do next though? A thin black wash? Silver highlights? Technically they are done apart from a bit of work on the Guns but feel I need to do something else.

Nice mate. Totally agree re: the uniformity of the undercoat stage, felt the same on my Nort Troopers. Anyway, old GW washes: mix badab black with asurmen blue thinned down. Will give them the right hue I reckon.

Yeah a couple of people have suggested an ink wash that wasn't black. Never done that before unless I was actually trying to colour something.
Might need convincing  :)

Well Cybermen are good at convincing or if not converting to their needs. :-)

Have 8 squads with 6 Cybermen in each. 7 lead by Cyber Lieutenants and 1 by the Cyber Leader and a Cyber Controller.

I'm happy  :D

Pushing and shoving starts at my clubs open day (http://www.brigademodels.co.uk/mws/ClubStuff/OpenDay2014/OpenDay2014.html) on the 28th June.

Close combat might be more comical than desired  ;)

Here's a more menacing shot of the horde  8)
