Hello,
For a couple of years I present games at the Hamburger Tactica now. Sometimes in a team but this year I am on my own.
It is end of January and 1 month left to Tactica. The good thing is that I am almost done with my stuff for this years Tactica. The bad thing is that my perfect time schedule gives me room for some more things to build ....Details details details and maybe some more minis ?
This year I will present a collection of World War One games.
When the planning started I only wanted to offer an early war game. A skirmish between Germans and French.

Than I thought - it is the 100th year anniversary of WW1- I should do a Trench game too ! So I first build a 2` x 2` game board for a trench raid. I painted German and British trench raiders and thought thats it....but I rolled so much sandbags and other material was still on stock so I decided to build another board for a larger game. The board is 2 x 4` now. I didnt build No Mans Land. It makes no use for a presentation game when one force has to cross No Mans Lands and is shot to pieces. I will let both player jump right into the action.
This is the board I am talking about :

I apologize for the picture. I am really not the greates photographer. But I assure you the miniatures are painted on a pretty high standard and the board is really cool with some details and hidden spots to discover during a game.
Here are some more pics.

The miniatures I use for the whole presentation are Renegade, Great War, Brigade Games and Old Glory Miniatures. I have a fairly large collection of ww1 miniatures. Most of them are painted. Some are unpainted. If I can keep up with the drive I maybe finish painting them all and afterwards I will buy some Cavalry models.

The idea is that the players can freely decide what part of the presentation they like to play. What I need to paint are some Objective markers. This brings me to Sidney Roundwood and his excellent blog. You can find it here :

It is an excellent blog. I know much about ww1 but when it come to game this theatre players need to visit Sidneys blog. It is very inspiring, full of fantastic pictures and knowledge. I could not have done this project - especially the trench stuff - without his blog ! Thank you Sir !
Finally two more pictures :

Gorgeous looking board and minis.
I always look forward to Tactica.
I Highly doubt I will ever be able to attend, but the pics leading up to, and afterwards, are some of the best hobby crack out there!
;D
-
Ok Björn, for trench you have to paint more figures. I think 1000 each side is enough. lol
Nice table again.
-
excellent!
I was curious about Your early war french...
-
That's all very Driscoles!!!!
Exceptional as ever
-
Wow :o :-*
Excellent Björn.
You have been a busy boy!
:)
-
Great Great War stuff, ace trench work you have there :-*
-
Wonderful stuff Bjorn. :-*
I imagine this will be a great game to play ;D
-
Nice work Björn. Good luck this year and please plenty of photos for us tourists.
Cheers,
Helen
-
You did it again, Björn, bravo! Another game I have to play this year :)
-
:o
Man, that trench table really is something! Outstanding and highly inspiring pictures, Björn!
-
Fantastic Björn :-* :-* :-*
You've certainly kept it quiet.
cheers
James

Great one Björn! :-*
-
It's looking great. :)
-
Thank you very much guys !
Nice comments are always encouraging.
There are still some things to do.
Event marker, a few more miniatures ( casualties ) a trench periscope, maybe a sniper hideout a few splintered tree trunks. A flame thrower burst and such things.
I also have a Pfalz DIII on my desk at the moment. I am thinking of using it as a turn marker.
The trench is not 100 % in scale. The trench could have been deeper but I wanted a playing piece not a perfectly build historical trench. But it is close to the real thing.
Anyway... I will post more pictures soon. The early war French are nice looking !
And thanks again LAFer`s
Cheers

Sweet.
You know how to put on a good show, B. I know that from personal experience.
-
Excellent scenery 8) 8) 8) 8)
Tactica certainly does seem to make people exert themselves to higher standards :)

Hi,
short update before the Tactica starts on Saturday.
I thought everything is finished and done but as always.... some things are left to be done. Fiddling on the scenarios for example ...
Here are some pictures.
A MG is supporting advancing infantry. In the background are ammo bearers !
Friedrich is hungry today....
Leutnant Kripphans leads his Platoon from horseback. The horse was shot under him shortly after this pictures was taken. Kripphans will be MIA at Verdun a few month later.
German Jaegers advancing over open ground. On the left is Leutnant Schneider. He brought his dog Leica to France. Both will survive the war. Leica switches sides when the front stiffens and the first trenches were dug. The rats on the allied side were probably fatter...

An aerial view taken from a German Taube scout plane.
The French are waiting at a farmstead
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/16/5_20_02_14_6_12_26.JPG)
They are lead by Lieutenant Arnoult. Also on horseback. The horse will die and most of his men will do too while defending the farmstead. He ends up as a POW in Germany and later becomes a close friend of De Gaulle who he meets at Festung Ingolstadt.
Sous-Lietenant Belcourt encourages his men to stop the advancing Germans.
He will join the French Airforce and becomes an ace with 8 confirmed victories. He will crash land in 1917 and looses a leg. After the war he becomes a math teacher.

I think I will continue this thread after the Tactica.

Amazing, Björn! Looking forward to see it soon :-*
-
Bring back many photos from Hamburg of this one, please. :)
-
It looks even more impressive in the flesh :)
-
It looks like a lovely table, Björn! :-*
I must say that all the terrain pieces seem to blend seamless, and that's always amazing!
-
Thank you guys.
Just returned after two days gaming from Hamburg Tactica.
It was a great show and I had lots of fun presenting the two ww1 game boards.
Very nice and friendly gamers with a sense of humor. I like it that way and it makes presenting games much more fun and easier ! Anway... Dylan....I wasnt able to shoot pictures myself but there must be plenty of them. I never had a gameboard
( especially the trench board ) that was photographed that often. As soon as are pics available I will post some links :)
Cheers

this is really amazing immersion Björn!
did You do all this by Yourself?
-
Thank you former user.
Yes, I did. I like to share projects for conventions with friends. We did that before with Hazel. Like the Spanish Civil War presentation, last years Sharpes presentation or the Jang Tse Kiang board with Grimm.
But this year I was all by myself. I build the trench board in December and painted lots of ww 1 miniatures during last year. Too many...I didnt need all of them. I also painted GWM Germans but they didnt storm the British trenches. The job was done by the Renegade Germans which I also like. The French were painted a couple of years ago when I bought them at the sweetwater forum from a wargames buddy and also the early war Germans were painted a few years back.
I really wish to have more Allies here in Kiel :)
-
Kudos man!
all very intimidating, to know this is all born not only from Your mind, but also from Your skill!
My utmost admiration for that
especially when I think that many people simply buy their hobby stuff, fully built and painted.....
-
Beautiful looking board and figs! Well done on the visuals for sure :)
-
The board was great at Tactica! I would love to have some time to actually play anything there instead of just presenting..
-
After having seen his table and figures in person I must say they look just great!! :-* Believe me when I say the pictures as good as they are still don't give his table and figures the full justice they deserve. So much so I'm inspired to collect my own early war Germans! :D

Thank you guys, that is very kind.
Thanks Axe !
GilmoreDK :
Since I saw ICOG the first time at Esbjergs Horisont I wanted to play the game. But I am also very busy with presenting at conventions. So I didnt play it at Horisont, I didnt play it at last years Tactica and I didnt play it at this years Tactica. Hopefully next year. We are planning something with a group...Maybe I can sneak away from the table :)
Cheers

Wonderful stuff. Great terrain and some splendid looking figures. ;D
I especially like the backstory to each of the officers. Poignant stuff.

Driscoles: We will be at Horisont the coming fall as well as the new DFF Con.
The DFF con is at the National Armory Museum in the Middle of Copenhagen and exclusively focuses on historical games. Your WWI board would fit in fine.. The setting is perfect with game boards just besides the exibitions. it just need to grow:

Is there a date for DFF Con. Hope they are not on the same weekend with Horisont like last year.
Presenting wargames in a museum sounds very tempting to me and Copenhagen is a very nice town.
-
Hi Driscoles
We are trying to get a new date with the muesuem but have nothing yet. We are trying to get a date in September.
We would love to have you at DFF con and I will let everyone here know as soon as we get a date.
Thanks
William

Great news, William. I'm looking forward to ringfencing that weekend :D
