So i'm in the middle of my final major project for college, and since these pieces got me a place at Wimbledon college of art for a sculpture degree, i thought you fine chaps might enjoy looking at them.
I took them to the college photography studio today and one of the second years was more than happy to snap them and edit them for me to really show off my work.
if anyone is interested i'm more than happy to explain the pieces, but personally i'm rather happy just looking at the pictures right now. :)

This is unfinished at the moment. it will eventually have several more skeletons with puritan robes and signs, and be contrasted with a second diorama showing gross excess.the two will be balanced on a set of scales ones completed.

This one isn't a miniature but i rather like it, and it was my first real experience of using resin.(fumigated an entire floor of the college.)

Also, if you want to see a few more pics, you can check out my skydrive file here. https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=A9F2ED546CB23CBF!166&authkey=!AFt0zhd8RBor3Zk&ithint=folder%2c (https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=A9F2ED546CB23CBF!166&authkey=!AFt0zhd8RBor3Zk&ithint=folder%2c)

Very nice. I would be interested to see the full set of scales when done, so please post it here!

I shall do, currently on a week break and spending it churning out skeletons.:)

Alright chap's, iv'e now had two offers for sculpture degree's and have an interview for goldsmiths thanks in no small part to my use of miniatures and dioramas to portray my ideas.
Now, in order to complete this full diorama by the 26th, I've ordered two boxes of wargames factory skeletons
, because they are simple, plastic and cheap in bulk.
( i sculpted 7 out of the 50 or so i need but they're too spindly to cast and its taking to long)
.I'll be reposing them and just generally messing with them, but i have a very serious question.
based on what people have heard or experience with these spindly things, i need to know,
How screwed am i?
I'll be assembling 60 of these into intricate dioramas, and the last thing i want is to find out that nothing i'm planning is going to work.

To be honest, they are a pain to assemble. I have managed to construct 8 of them before giving up. Although I had the older ones, the newer ones seem to be a bit less fragile ... You could also look at Ebob, he has metal skeletons although also a bit fragile if you want to repose them. The GW skeletons are way easier to assemble but are also more cartoonish and expensive. I hope this helps a bit ;)

It does indeed :) i have a load of mantic skeletons upstairs but sadly i need plain "naked" ones for the work im doing.
im alright with fiddly (i've assembled the plastic malifuax archers) i just don't want too many obvious breaks on the focal miniatures is all.
-
I really like that :-* Very evocative!
-
I like the naive style. It feels Tim Burton-esque to me, with a touch of Eastern European animation for some reason.

I wish I could say that the style was deliberate, but its more a case of me not being able to sculpt and having to get the whole maquette finished fast to try and explain my ideas better. :D

Wow, you really are fine with fiddly, I had to put mine away before I smashed the stupid hats and their stupid curtains! They'll come back out again at some point :)
Look forward to seeing the finished item.

Salvador Dali was pants at anatomy and he didn't do so bad. To the gallows deny mate ... everything is deliberate!

I never said I enjoyed the experience, but theyre done.Salvador Dali was pants at anatomy and he didn't do so bad. To the gallows deny mate ... everything is deliberate!
Haha, the secret of surrealism revealed ;) you'd be amazed how many great painters talked about struggling with anatomy, it takes years to be able to take a pencil and draw a perfectly proportioned figure without need to measure from life. (speaking as someone who can draw everything fine but always tops it off with a head 50% too small)
-
right, cus and sanded my plinths in the workshop, got to sculpting my final bases for the dioramas.
here we have the ground work of the super ego diorama, currently awaiting skeletons and a good dark stain for the wood which is currently just painted with a think ink wash.really feel like i'm getting better at creating landscapes.if i had more time and money i'd like to have a proper go at making the ground effects myself rather than using gw's new cracked earth paint.
This took my about an hour all together, and like a fool o forgot to bring the other plinth home to do on my day off, so it looks like i'm FORCED to paint those lovely ralpartha miniatures i've got sitting about......for practice ya know ;)
Any tips would be great, i want to keep this one fairly light as the ID diorama will be pretty dark in tone.
-
Looking good so far!

thankyou, this is my first time properly sculpting with milliput and i'm quite happy with the rock texture :)
-
Oh now, I really, really like that cracked earth effect.
So, if you weren't using GW's paint, how would one go about getting the same effect?
Just ... you know ... hypothetically, like ...

Well, you could get some crackle medium from a craft store, which would be more precise and give a more consistent look,or you can paint over a thin touch dry layer of pva and then give the whole lot a blast with a hairdryer.
-
Lovely job, thanks. I'm going to be giving that a go, fer shewer.

Skeletons not yet arrived from ebay,so I got to work on the ID diorama.few minutes of assembly sculpting and painting and it's underway. Picked up a mig mud kit for this one, looks like a fun box of stuff to stain my clothes

As always any advice is greatly appreciated, and the kind chaps at massive voodoo have agreed to give these pics a quick look, which should mean a little helping hand.
Also just set myself up a blog, so look forward to my rants being on there rather than here. :)

Coming along nicely there nic-e. Do you have a sketch of the finished work? It would be nice to see where it's headed.
I like the ink stain combined with the light sand top TBH.
Cheers
Matt

I do indeed although my concept sketches are almost indecipherable to anyone but myself ;) i will upload a few of my sketchbook pages tomorrow evening since I'll have access tot he high res scanner during the day tomorrow.i will also be mixing up that lovely mig mud, so i'll have some pictures of that up soon. (and provided the skeletons turn up this week, a few pictures of me weeping over thousands of tiny broken leg sprues.)
-
yup, they turned up.these guys are REALLY spindly.which for me is great, because i can repose them, but i can definitely see why some people don't like these.
I'll spend the night having a good mess around with these, i have 60 to play around with and i'm sure i'll have some kicking around spare to play with and make some dioramas of my own once this project is complete.
-
First skeleton assembled. This chap will be in the mud trying to fend of an attacker
(http://rs1350.pbsrc.com/albums/p771/Nic-e2/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140316_175529_zpsb14b6acf.jpg~320x480)
(just a warning, this piece is gonna get kind of Freudian from here onwards, any of the more "mature " poses will go on my blog.) these guys really are delicate, how any one can wargame with them is beyond me,but the separate feet and empty hands really helps me.ive already broken one set of legs as i decided i would use one to try out how far i could bend them.( not far is the answer)
Edit.got the attacker done.

"where's my money! "

Loving the look of these skeletons. I've been searching for some one to use these as wasnt sure wether to get some.
liking the way you posing them, awsome work so far can't wait for more to come. :D

I've occupied the office as my studio so more to come soon. :)
The skeletons are great IF you are okay with tiny parts.I've been receiving and shaping these guys and they look really good, but i wouldn't recommend converting these for tabletop use as they will almost certainly break in a travel case or a light breeze
-
Okay, so before i go any further i have to say that this picture depicts violent sexual themes.i will say that this is intended to be an art piece ,not a gaming piece and that these themes are in context to the overall theme of the work. i do however understand if the images, regardless of how miniature and skeletal they are, cause offense, and am more than happy for mods to remove them if they feel that they are in any way "graphic".
Sex is an central idea of Freudian psychology, and the violent fulfillment of sexual desire is one of the more brutal urges of the ID part of the unconscious.
so here for your pleasure are a few quick pics of half the skeletons of the first diorama tacked in place before i start adding mig mud.

I like this chap because of all the skeletons so far on this base he is the most innocent.he will be eating ,his ribs overflowing with rancid food.despite that, he's still far less unsettling than the others.
and a quick pic to show that i do plan things out (kind of)
Until these are painted it's not worth me booking time in the photography studio, and besides which the interview for goldsmiths in on the 26th so these need to be done by then.
i promise better picture soon.
-
Are they going to be boning?
-
Are they going to be boning?
Skeletons on the large rock in the center. they are meant to imply that.
As i said, i can move certain images to a different site if need be since this isn't exactly a hilariuos scene of carry on comical boning.
...................................i just got the joke.
-
So after a couple of weeks i'v got them both done.i managed to get them both completed in time for my interview on the 24th and will soon get real photographs done when i begin my professional practice preparation in a week.
anyway, here are the final W.I.P pictures of the two diroamas.

as i say, these are the final w.i.p pics and are missing a few skeletons still, but now that i've got them done and had the interview i can take them to the photography studio and get a macro lens on them.
-
I like your work- like a cross between Jon Blanche's early work and Jake and Dinos Chapman's Hell (which I'm sure you're familiar with)
-
Impressive work. Those skeletons are very spindly, but they work well for your purposes!
-
How do you feel the interview went?
-
How do you feel the interview went?
as well as an interview can go when you have a proffesor of art theory grilling you on every aspect on your work whilst sounding EXACTLY like jeff goldblum. ;D honestly, i think it went OKAY, there was alot i could have said afterwards once i'd left the building and the nerves had passed, but i managed to hold my own against a pretty strong critique by three proffesors.(i think...) either way, im leaning more towards wimbledon than goldsmiths, and they accepted me during the interview so the worst i can do now is not get accepted and have my decision made for me.

thankyou :) those were actually the two main scources i looked at when planning these pieces.the chapman brothers less so, but their use of classic compassison on a diorama was helpful when composing these pieces. :)
-
Every interview ever has you thinking of everything you should have said afterwards its just a fact of life.
Best o fluck mate.

qft.
Also goldsmiths are notorious for making people cry in their interviews as a way of testing whether or not they can cut it not just there but in south london.so on that front i didpretty well lol

Make the fuckers cry back.

aye, they really are.i can't imagoine them survivng the journey to a game, but all together they have a nice effect.
(incidentally,if anyone wants to know how to pack a diorama to survive a coach trip, tube journey and walk around london, let me know and 'll share my secret... )
-
Application to goldsmiths failed sadly, but I'm not down and out about it since now I can accept wimbledon without worry.i would like to thank you all for the encouragement you gave me during this project, and to repeat my promise of better photographs soon. :)
-
Glad you still get to go to a university that you want rather than settling. Best of luck in the future mate.

Congratulations on Wimbledon! As someone who has just spent the last couple of months being rejected for PhD funding from various universities I know how distracting the whole academic interview process can be (fortunately just been offered a place at Kent myself)... I eagerly await your first exhibition at the Tate...
Oh, and I like the dioramas, too! :)

I shall call it "the miniature collector" and it will be a huge lead mountain in the center of the turbine hall that audiences have to paint themselves with 00 size brushes ;D
thankyou :)
-
well after a few weeks delay i finally got some time in the photography studio to get some quality shots of these dioramas.
Sorry for this post being very pic heavy to anyone who hates pic heavy posts.
So here is the first diorama, the ID.

As always , i hope you enjoy the images, and please feel free to question or criticize my work, i am more than happy to talk about it to anyone interested.
I also have a few single skeletons that i am working on right now to create a series that is meant to help people confront the realities of mental illness, if anyone wants to see them i will gladly post the few pictures i have.
-
I love the details, but could You please be so kind and show the totals too?
and yes please, the ones about mental illness too
-
It would be nice to see a longer shot of both, just to put the whole thing into perspective. :)

here you are gents.sadly the size of the dioramas makes them too big to use a macro lens and too small to not use one, so these are a tad fuzzy.

And here we have the beginning of my series of mental illness illustrations.
here we have bipolar disorder.

Now in these two i hope no one will find offense.
I am attempting to provide a way for people to view mental illness in a similar way to how they would view a physical illness.people can find it hard to come to terms with mental illness as the mind is such an abstract thing.
I use skeletons not just to be spooky but to help make the piece relatable, as a form of non abstract structure that we can all relate too that can help us come to terms with the less physical elements of the human experience.whilst the mind is invisible and lacks a physical side where we can see issues with it, the skeleton is always there, and when something goes wrong with it, we tend to notice.
-
I find it amazing howYou managed to put motion into some puny plastic skeletons.
I draw my hat
I almost expect them to start moving....

Thankyou for the kind words :)
I did watch Jason and the Argonauts ALOT while i was making these ;)
Incidentally, i will be displaying the single skeletons and some much larger dioramas i am building at a local exhibit next month and by that time i may have a small booklet of these skeletons made up with a few words on each piece. It may not get made, but if it does i'm sure i can send some out to anyone who wants one.
-
I would, but the pdf would suffice

I'll have to make one to get the booklets printed,so i'm sure i can post up a link if it gets made.:)

There is a definite Jason & the Argonauts vibe going on here, if that's a compliment. :D
-
btw, the pics for the totals - the lighting might be too strong - try indirect, oblique and reflected light, then You get a broader gradient

the pics of the full dioramas were a pain to take. we had to turn the lens backwards to try and get a macro effect from far enough away ,and the larger light setup was being used by someone from the fashion department. rest assured i shall be going back with these and using the larger light with the diffusing set up attached :)
-

I'll take it as one ,even if it's not :D

a sheet of white paper, a mirror or a reflector might be simpler
I have seen the setups for wallace and grommit, and they always use indirect lighting

I'll give it a go next time i'm in the photography studio.i used a diffused lighting set up for the early concept piece on page 1 and it gave good results.equally i will be adjusting these images soon to get the best balance.
-
I find a neutral grey sheet of construction paper works the best to bounce light. It does so more subtly than white paper. Ive also gotten away with just tissue paper held in front of the light bulb seems to work just as good as the expensive set ups.

good advice, i hall note it down :) for now i have free access to a full studio set up, so it's just a matter of messing around to try and get different effects.

Great work!

Nice work mate!
-
I like all of them 8) 8)
I know they have served their purpose (well done by the way) but one little niggly thing would be that the cross on top of the slate seems to be just perched there, almost like its balancing. I don't know whether a few small rocks around the base would help to nullify that :)
Love the ground work as well, very realistic 8)
cheers
James

I know they have served their purpose (well done by the way) but one little niggly thing would be that the cross on top of the slate seems to be just perched there, almost like its balancing. I don't know whether a few small rocks around the base would help to nullify that :)
Love the ground work as well, very realistic 8)
cheers
James
The cross on the rock bugs me aswell, but it was a trade off really.you see originally it was going to be drilled and pinned, but the milliput was in danger of splitting.instead, i glued it on top lightly so it could be easily fixed it knocked off during transport to interviews.I may build up a milliput base around it to help blend it to the rock now.
thankyou for the encouragement chaps :)

Just a quick word, i have just updated my facebook page,so if you want to keep track of my work you can find it here https://www.facebook.com/NicEvansArt
I also sent wargames factory the pictures and they posted them to their own page.nothing new, just fun. :)

how do you like working with milliput? vs. say greenstuff, pro-create, magic-sculpt, etc.

It's better to create bases with texture since it's less sticky.vs greenstuff, its easier to get sharp details, but not on a small scale. i cant compare to the others since i haven't used them.
It's useful for large bulk things, anything fine detailed i'd suggest greenstuff or super sculpey.

magic-sculpt is good for larger things. (100mm+) at that size greenstuff starts to work against you, for polymer clays I tend to like Fimo more than super sculpey for things under 100mm, but for over 10cm-30cm I find a mixture of Sculpey Firm mixed with Sculpey III works the best. Sculpey Firm by itself is a bit 'crumbly'. But Sculpey III is too soft and 'sticky' to be used alone. I often wonder what would be the results if epoxy clays were mixed. Im yet to actually try.
One day perhaps...

I see alot on frothers or other sites about creating a "nice mix" (sounds like my stoner friends ) .
I tried mixing greenstuff and milliput on these dioramas and just ended up with a half dried lump of mess after 3 days and have to crape it off and start again.

hmmm... Perhaps because theyre different types of epoxies that were not chemically compatible.
In anycase you saved me the trouble. ;)
(And yes I realize how that sounds. lol)
