Hi,

Here it goes my personal Republican Army formula:

Ordnance uniform: 70.873 US Field Drab (others recommend a slightly darker tone, such as British Uniform)
Overalls: 70.988 Khaki
Gaiters (when worn): 70.886 Green Grey
Helmet: 70.890 Reflective Green (usually applied to Adrian helmets), or 70.879 Green Brown (other helmets)
Beltings, ammo cartridges and so: 70.985 Hull Red
Haversack: 70.819 Iraqui Sand
Canteen: either 70.880 Khaki Grey or an Aluminium tone
Shoes: 70.984 Flat Brown

Wish it helps,
Lluís

David,

The Peninsular Army had green/grey uniforms to begin with but since I use oil paint I can't give you any references. My usual mix is Chrome Green with black and white added as a basis and then a very small amount of ochre to tone the 'coolnes' of the mix down a bit.
It's actually a fairly light colour which apparently faded very quickly. Might have had something to do with the dies.
Especially for Nationalist African troops use lots of white in your mix.
Contemporary pictures show almost 'white' uniforms -even taking into consideration the older type of film material- so perhaps a very light grey with a tinge of green would do. Odly enough the yellow die in the green faded first which left a slight blueish tint on the uniforms.

There were also 'Summer' and 'Winter' uniform sets... the Summer grey-green one being mostly cotton, which as Willie says, did not hold its colour too well. The Winter one was much darker and tended towards a more 'European' colour not unlike that of the French.

Until the Republic began producing its 'new' uniform, the 'Nationalist' colour was evident on both sides and even quite late into the war could still be found alongside the more brown-tinged Republican one.

'The' book on uniforms is still Bueno's: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Uniformes-militares-Guerra-Civil-Espa%C3%B1ola/dp/8492264403 but you can buy it from Spanish online sellers far cheaper than the Amazon price... I paid 10 or 20 Euros for mine iirc.

A search on 'uniformes guerra civil' will bring up a whole load of stuff on Google Images though.  ;)
