Title: 15mm Great Boer War - Naismith or Gallia?
Post by: Ahistorian on February 23, 2014, 09:35:34 AM
I want to try a cheap Boer War project, which I hope to morph with NWF.

Naismith at http://www.navwar.co.uk/nav/default.asp?MMID=92 (http://www.navwar.co.uk/nav/default.asp?MMID=92), and Gallia at http://www.warrioronline.demon.co.uk/gallia/galliacolonial.htm (http://www.warrioronline.demon.co.uk/gallia/galliacolonial.htm) are my two main contenders at the moment.

Does anyone have any pictures or experience of these two brands? I have seen three photos of the Gallia Afghans, who seem to have a rotund 80s charm, and one of a Naismith Brit who was fantastically detailed for his size.

Cheers in advance for any help.

Ahistorian,

No experience with Naismith but a minor bit with Gallia - though not your range of interest.  Figures tended towards to smaller size of 15 mm, compatible with Minifigs or Peter Pig size figures but too small, generally, for Irregular or Blue Moon sizes.  I'm afraid that's the best help I can be here, no pictures.

I do prefer smaller 15s on the whole - which part of the Gallia range have you encountered? I've also been considering their American Frontier, ECW, Feudal and Samurai models for various projects.

I have had a few Naismith 15s in the past. I think they were pretty chunky. Not sure what the Gallia look like.

Sorry, realise that you're asking about two specific brands BUT, working entirely from memory here, the Two Dragons' colonial range had some very nice British for Omdurman:

My experience with Gallia was with American frontier figures.  Decent amount of animation, okay anatomy.  Work just fine on the table.  All figures take a HUGE step up when they are painted. :)

The Gallia/Warrior NWF Pathans are quite nice figures, that paint up well, but I think I'd go for the Blue Moon ones instead these days (budget, what budget?) .

Ahistorian, I think you'll find that, figure for figure, Blue Moon is cheaper than Gallia/Warrior but then you, being in the UK, have to deal with shipping fees which might negate the difference - unless you got an army card (which very quickly pays for itself).  But you aren't going to go wrong with Gallia figures, they are pretty nice.  But for future when your budget improves, know they are a good deal smaller than the Blue Moon.

Here in the UK, they are literally half the price when bought in bulk, and barely more than that the rest of the time.

It's good to know Gallia are good - I don't suppose you'd have any photos?
