Title: The Wyre Protective (Full Report now of First AAR pg.3) 12/03
Post by: Brummie Thug on 25 February 2014, 10:49:20 PM
Well being fired up for Post Apocalyptic gaming lately I've decided to start out a small campaign based in the world of Across the Dead Earth. Its set in the nearby area of Bewdley on the River Severn so if your local some names may seem familiar you may recognise some as they've been changed or switched round to make it fit in more.

Anyway here's my background for the the Ville known as The Wyre and the two gangs that will be fighting in my campaign with a bit of background for each of the character. Let me know what you think. Hoping to have my first game later in the week and a report will appear soon.

The Wyre Protective.

A small farming community living in the ville known as The Wyre its a small ville that is hidden amongst the thick and verdant forest land that runs along the riverbanks of the Seven. Mostly living off of the forest they breed and live off herds of Wallabies that they have brought with them from the south lands when they migrated up into the middle lands.

The Protective have a number of warrior bands chosen from the toughest and strongest of the many families that make up the community of the Wyre. The bands often spend weeks at a time away from the Ville as they range far and wide hunting down dangerous beast's that threaten the herds and marauding gangs coming out of The Rag Market who wish to scavenge in the pre collapse ruins for loot.

The Stour Raider's

Left to Right Dixon, Jess, Herb and Red Rum.

Jess is the leader of one the group defending Wyre they simply call themselves the Stour Raiders. Jess though to look at is quite small in stature however she possesses a wiry strength and is very clever and quick thinking . All members Jess hand picks those who join the Stour raiders favouring those who can pick there way across the broken land quietly and efficiently. Equipped with her trusty shotgun and a strange pre war weapon she found whilst scouting a Ville known as the Port Jess ruthlessly defends the Wyre from outsiders.

Dixon is Jess's second in command a tireless tracker and hunter he use's his crossbow to bring down his prey whether it be wild beast's, raiders or Sollus. Often Dixon takes the ears from his kills that he deems worthy keeping them on a thong tied around his neck.

Herb is Dixon's older moodier brother another skilled hunter and forager who taught his little brother everything he knows. When Herb was a yob he was very experimental with the wild plants found in the wilds earning him the nickname Herb. This experimentation has proved invaluable knowing the best plants to make poultices and foul smelling remedies that supposedly fend off the wild beast and insects.

Red Rum is the last surviving member of his family he was one of three brothers the older two Morgan and Captain both being killed by a raiding gang whilst protecting the Wallaby herds. Favouring getting up close and personal he loves nothing more than burying his red hafted axe into his enemies soft flesh earning him the nickname 'Red' for the bloody wounds he inflicts with it.

The Razor's

Left to Right Scurve, Bran, Bear and Raven.

The Razor's are the remnants of a larger biker gang that used roam to roam and raid all over the middle lands. Falling upon hard times after an ambush by State troopers leaving over two thirds of the gang dead or captured. The Razor's flee west in the hope of licking there wounds and increasing there numbers and loot.

Scurve is the leader of the Razor's now. Once the mechanic off the gang he doesn't think twice about using his trusty wrench to bash in skulls when his hand cannon fails to blowing hole big holes in things.

Bran was the gangs fixer a dab hand at patching up the guys when wounded and always seems to have a stash of  his home brewed medical concoctions to  to fix people up when they need it.

Bear is a little crazy when a kid his grandma used to read him stories from a history book she'd found in the ruins of house. It was all about a band of warriors that used to raid and pillage called Vikings ever since then thats all Bear has want to be. Hefting his axe and shield and wearing his horned helmet he loves nothing more than charging his enemies head on and hacking them into pieces.

Raven is one of the newest members of the gang. Found in abandoned building the gang where planning on sleeping the night in. Raven was sneaky enough to steal a knife and a kill a member of the gang who was seeking to have his way with her. Scurve could see what a useful asset to the gang she could be and instead of seeking revenge upon her offered her a place amongst them giving the girl the dead gang members gear. Raven seeing an opportunity to live took it and is now a valued member.

Atmospheric background ... and good looking paintjob by the way!

A good background is an important contribution for a great game. My experience is, that player enjoy to play a charakter, not just a profile with attributes.

Thanks yes indeed I enjoyed making up the backgrounds for them even if the names aren't that original. I am on the hunt for some Wallabies now for some Wallaby tipping .

Looks good, just one small note from an Aussie; Wallabies are notoriously hard to breed in captivity and would probably be tough and gamey.  ;D

Safer to stick with sheep or goats. More usefully, one u wool and meat, the other cheese. Chickens are also very usefully becase like goats they are not that labor intensive, feed themselves and produce lots of eggs.

Cheers for the tip these are meant to be one of the only species of animals left to survive. So its kind of beggars can't be choosers or eat grass  :D

Plus there are rumours of loose Wallabies near where we live in Birmingham in the local hills so adds more to the local background :)

This is Dorset but supposedly some where seen in the Lickey Hills which is mentioned in this article :)

Interesting, I guess the wet and cold don't bug them to much.
I was just thinking of work to pay off is all. How often do they breed and how many kids per a pregnancy?
Title: Re: The Wyre Protective
Post by: Brummie Thug on 28 February 2014, 03:41:21 PM
Yeah when I first saw them in the background for the Forestkin I was a bit huh? But when you read in to it they live in quite harsh conditions can defend themselves and some articles I read some species have  had to be controlled with poison and other things. So a quieter world they could potentially thrive.

I'm on the look out for figures to use now just because I want to  lol

just say some thing like the abundance of food, and lack of natural predators has allowed there population to explode and for them to grow bigger.

Over here is southern Nevada we have a hug population of rabbits, jack-rabbits and hairs. And not to far north of Vegas there is a noticeable rise in elevation and vegetation. Lots of Deer and mountain lions, and land that supports farms and ranches.

See really in the UK there aren't really any wild big predators certainly only some big ones in zoo's.

I am sure we can see an up surge in wild pigs, in the UK. With a massive population die off. they will ruin your farm and your day.
Just tossing ideas out there, by the way. Not trying to shoot down your ideas. I need to read the background more to figure out what critters made it through the disaster and which didn't.

The Studio Miniatures model actually has it sculpted on you can't actually see it unless you pick the figure up and and look as the crossbow covers it.

Thinking I might add some furs and skins to my one.

It would be a doddle to swap as well. the horizontal piece with the arrows is separate could splice any rifle/shotgun into it pretty much.

The Wyre Protective Game 1 'Loot' (Part 1)

Scurve looked down the valley though his scope at what damage nature's wrath had done to what was once a heavily wooded area. The smell of disturbed earth assaulted his nostrils as he contemplated what his gangs next move was going to be.

It had rained incessantly for nearly a week forcing the four of them to seek shelter in an abandoned ruin as the ground had became to slippery and impassible to move onwards. It was far to risky to go back the way they had came either they were stuck for now and had to wait it out.

The rain had stopped  Scurve decided to give it an extra day for the ground to become a bit more manageable before heading onwards. A good job they had really as shortly after breaking there fast a deep rumbling and snapping sound was heard from a far at first but steadily came closer and closer the ground now saturated from all the heavy rain began to give way in a massive landslip forcing the gang to retreat from there shelter as massive chunk of the valley collapsed and rolled away.

Scurve was now using his scope planning the best route down into the valley to get across to the other side cursing there recent luck. When out came a break in the cloud cover a patch of a sunlight shone down into the dell and at the bottom  of the valley the glint of metal was shining all over the place.

Whsitling to the others to get there attention. Come on guys lets go take a look maybe we'll find us something valuable and get us some liquor and some more ammo.

Two miles on the opposite side of the valley......

Jess led her band of raiders through the forest they were out on a scouting run checking the area to see what damage the rains and recent land slides had done and checking on the herds.

Approaching the crest of the hill Jess looked down into the valley below spotting the disturbed earth and metal glinting in the daylight. Giving hand signals to the rest of the group they moved off to investigate.

Arriving at the Dell in the bottom of the valley the four scouts noticed all of a sudden it go deathly quiet no crows cawing or the usual buzz of insects chirping. Sensing something was amiss they all drew there weapons and began to move as quiet as ghosts.

First game of the campaign played on Tuesday night rather than just having a scrap I quite fancied trying out some of the different scenario's and decide to have a stab at a 'Loot' game.
The object of this scenario is to try and collect as many loot counters as possible and return them to your start zone.

Sounds simple enough it wasn't quite a stock as per the rulebook game as I tweaked it slightly to fit in with the background that had popped up while me and my girls set out the terrain.

I had the two gangs coming across an old road with wrecked vehicles on that had been previously buried until the recent natural disaster uncovered them. I chose three normal cars and 1 lorry ably assisted by the mini me Carmen we randomly selected loot counters from a pot (each have there own points value on) and then putting 2 on each car and 3 on the lorry face down so we wouldn't know what the gangs would be picking up. It would cost an action to search the lorry (well pick up a loot counter) representing them rummaging through the wreck looking for useful stuff then carrying it off to there camps. (normally you probably wouldn't use this many counters but as this only going to be a short one I figured what the heck).

Base camps are the gangs deployment zone. (Which has made me want to make some camp fires and stuff) once returning the loot I moved the loot counters off to the stat sheets so I could record who had found what.

Points are awarded for removing enemies from play and if done up close and personal this is doubled as it represents the gang member looting valuables, ammo etc from the downed party.

The old road uncovered by the flood with a line of wrecked vehicles.

Turn 1

Both gangs now realising the could be plenty of loot amongst these ancient wrecks both advance cautiously so they can begin the searching.

Bran and Raven head towards the right hand cars whilst Scurve and Bear approach the truck hugging the cover afforded them by the large rocks and bushes.

The Stour Raider's split up with Herb and Redrum approaching the central car and Jess and Dixon making a move for the far Right car.

Turn 2

Red Rum sprints upto the central car ready to search it for loot. Raven advances and takes a pot shot at him but theres an ominous click as her guns jams on her.

Herb moves forward and takes a shot at Raven but the arrow fails to reach her (Out of Range). Bran then moves up to the bushes and rips off a burst of fire from his machine pistol at Herb but the recoil spoils his aim.

Dixon moves over to the truck and pulls himself up top to take advantage of  its height. Bear moves into the hard cover provided by the rocks. Jess moves to the nearest car wreck grabs some loot and moves back to her position behind the rock. Scurve braces his hand cannon and takes careful aim at Dixon but the shot goes wild and just blows a hole in the undergrowth.

Turn 3

Bran moves further along the bushes and lets rip at Red Rum with his uzi blasting him over the pain knocking him unconscious.
Herb moves across the old roadway and hits Bran with an arrow from his bow but failed to to get through Bran's jacket.
Raven cleared the jammed pistol and fires a shot off at Herb but clearing the jam has thrown her aim off.

Pic 2

Dixon sights down his crossbow at Scurve but the bolt harmlessly clacks of the large rock Scurve is sheltering behind. Bear moves up to the truck and grabs a loot counter (Pic 1). Jess drops off her loot at camp (pic 2). Scurve moves to the other end of the rock loosing another shot at Dixon on top of the truck blowing Dixon off his feet and causing him to loose conciousness. Scurve gives a sharp whistle to Bear and points back to base camp with his loot Bear starts to head back(pic 1).

Turn 4

Bran steadies his machine pistol and lets rip a burp of fire from it at Herb missing completely. Herb nocks another arrow and with what seemed like deadly precision hits Bran with it again only for the tough biker to shrug it off as if it was nothing. Raven moves up hoping to take a better shot at Herb hitting him but failing to cause him any harm. Jess hearing a lot of gunfire over to the east sprints over to help out Herb.

Bear continues running over to base camp whilst Scurve grabs a second loot counter from the truck and also heads back.

Turn 5

Herb draws his Bowie knife and charge into Raven causing a mighty blow which Raven shrugs off as if it was nothing. Bran opens fire at Jess but the spray of bullets are wide of the mark. Jess in return moves behind the bush and lets rip with her shotgun at Bran but despite taking aim is wide of the mark. Raven slips away from Herb and blasts him with her pistol the bullet ricochets off his Bowie knife and he is unharmed.

Bear and Scurve drop off there loot and prepare to go help out Bran and Raven.

Turn 6

Herb once again charges into Raven this time cutting the woman down. Bran opens fire at Herb in revenge hitting him but causing no damage. Jess hefts her hockey stick and charges into Bran who matches her blow for blow but Jess being the more experienced fighter chops his legs out from under him and brings it down sharply on his head taking him out Quickly looting  him of anything of value.

Bear and Scurve both move towards the fight but arrive to late Scurve squeezes off a shot at Herb with Hand cannon but the heavy calibre bullet merely ping's off the wrecked vehicle behind his target.

Turn 7

Herb gives a Raven a good few kicks to make sure she is out of the fight for good and quickly rifles her pockets for any loot. Moving over the nearby car to begin searching it. Bear sprints over to the truck intent on grabbing some loot but also intent on taking out some of his frustrations on the prone Stour Raider lying unconscious atop it. Jess moves over to the central car picks up some loot and grabbing  Red Rum by his arm starts to drag him back to camp.

Scurve moves over to the car grabs some loot and looses a shot off at Jess the heavy bullet hitting her in the back and blowing her over unconscious.

That concludes part 1 lookout for part 2 on Sunday! If you want bigger pics than you can read it on my blog.

Well written AAR and a fun read, nicely painted models.

Only thing that I have an issue with is the "runs back to camp, drops loot, runs back" mechanic, I think there has to be a better way of dealing with it. Maybe each "loot" should be specified and player can decide whether to carry it and risk losing it or conceal it in situ to recover at end of game if alive/able.

I kind of like it but you could mod it to however you like,. I didn't play it stock either as I want a lot to increase the gangs sizes.

It does makes me want to make loot counters and a base camp lol I've already ended up buying some bits today from the show. Got some stuff from Four A miniatures and Warbases for it. In fact Four A I could of bought a lot of but just couldn't make my mind up.

Loot's value is USUALLY known as soon as it is collected, it was a mod to hide the value until shipped. All versions make for different but valid options, I think!

Turn 14
Sorry no pics they turned out blurry for some strange reason? Anyhow Razor's won the initiative and got back to there base camp with the final loot counter meaning the game ended.

Post Game.
Really enjoyed this game the event cards were a bit unkind this time the ones drawn from the deck just didn't fit in with what was going on. Blanks for the Razors and Medic! cards for the Stour Raider's who didn't have one. But hey you can't pick what cards you draw.

Tallying up the Loot counters collected (they all have there own points values on the back) The razor's Win this game! 85 points of loot they found plus 20 points from removing Red Rum and Dixon for a total of 105points. The Stour Raiders ended up with 30 points of loot plus 20 points from removing Bran and Raven for a total of 50points. The Razor's did snag 6 counters to the Raiders 3 thought they both inflicted the same amount of casualties.

Post game injury results where rolled Red Rum and Raven both rolled full recoveries. Dixon and Bran ended up with minor injuries having to pay 5 points each to be able to play in the next game.
A good result for the Razor's they have plenty of cash to spend. Bran gets gets healed. Scurve gained the walkie talkies skill, Bear gains Charge skill and a pistol, Raven specialise's in Scout and Slippery skills as well as now being equipped with a grenade. A new member is recruited nick named Skud well armed with an SMG, Chain and Grenade.

The Razor's kill a mutated creature.

The Stour Raider's don't do badly either the have less cash to spend. Dixon gets healed, Herb gains Medic and Physician Heal Thyself skills and they gain a new member called Mad Dog armed with an axe.
