Here are a few pictures of a last minute showpiece we came up for Tactica last weekend. Actually, it was started on a whim about a week before the show, and I never imagined that we were able to produce something showable in that timeframe ::) I have not yet made pictures of the whole thing, but here are a few construction pictures.
Underconstruction is Styrodur, covered with mattress foam, covered in turn with PVA and fine sand.
The foam material had to be held in place with toothpicks while the glue was drying (hence the project name. The actual vegetation is more tropical). I recommend gloves for pushing these in - those Chinese torturers knew full well what can be achieved with bamboo splinters.
Front and back view of the already painted rock.
(http://pictures.pardulon-models.com/workbench/archipel/archipel_04.jpg) (http://pictures.pardulon-models.com/workbench/archipel/archipel_03.jpg)
Shanty attached to the rock face. By now, there are plenty more, connected with ladders and walkways.
Pipeline to feed the machinery inside the cave.
Now for the dilemma: I have absolutely no idea what to do with it in the end lol The idea is to make this into a gaming table, consisting of three to four of those rock islands, all of them interconnected by walkways or suspension bridges. It will be definitely post-apoc (or at least sufficiently backwater to justify the rusty shanties). I could imaginge a pirate or smuggler outpost of some kind, or a trading post, but it could also be a last resort on a zombie- or mutant infested world. Other suggestions would be highly appreciated.
-
:o :o
Whatever you do with it in the end, it is a genius idea that I am well and truly stealing.
8) 8) 8)
I can see all sorts of uses for this technique, starting with the outside covering of a tropical island for a criminal mastermind to live in.
That is something that is starting to come to fruition with bits and pieces being acquired in my usual hoarder fashion....
Thanks for the inspiration!
:D
One question: How durable is the foam after being PVA'd?

Wow! I want to see the developements!
One question: How durable is the foam after being PVA'd?
Same question for me =)

Ubercool :o

Oh dear Jens, there you go again! :-*

One question: How durable is the foam after being PVA'd?
I used two coats, and diluted the first layer of PVA quite heavily. The material is essentially a sponge, so it will soak up the mixture. If you add a bit of paint, the outermost millimeters will by dyed as well, so it doesn't really matter if the sand/PVA crust chips a little here and there. It just enhances the rocklike texture. But after two coats, it is quite durable as well.
-
Cheers, Zafarelli!
:)
I shall have to give it a go.
A thin layer of foam should be best, I reckon.
-
Very border lands...love it
-
That's going to be cracking! :o :o
Can I make a suggestion though?... I tried it on my Aquanauts and pirate stuff, I found it more durable if you use TopCoat. It's a kinda wetter polyfilla/plaster. Same as the PVA, the stuff will be soaked up like a sponge but it makes it as hard as a rock! Might be worth doing on future rocks?
-
Really great looking piece. Richard

Much appreciated!

Ooooh I can just imagine a few of those with rope bridges going between them. Very nice!

AMAZING! :o
Boreing question, where's the pipe work from?

Great stuff :)

Boreing question, where's the pipe work from?
My guess would be the main mans website....
http://pardulon-models.com/en/buildings-und-parts/add-ons-und-accessories/186/wall-decor-i-pipes (http://pardulon-models.com/en/buildings-und-parts/add-ons-und-accessories/186/wall-decor-i-pipes)
-
Hoo-hah! That's crazy!
Looks great!
-
Thanks, people!
Mason, yes quite thin. We got plenty of cut-offs from a local dealer for some loose change, and found that 30 mm is a good strength. They were ripped lengthwise to give two roughly 15 mm strong pieces with irregular surfaces. Any stronger than that is awkward to handle. We made some smaller spires from 100x100x250 mm pieces without Styrodur core, though.
Andrew, I made the pipes some time ago as part of my industrial range. The larger pieces I used here have never been released yet, as I had never used them. This might change soon 8) These are from the same batch (http://pardulon-models.com/en/accessories/containers-und-machinery/173/grosse-rohre). The ones Andym mentioned are way smaller.
Andym, thanks for the heads-up. I'll see if I can find an equivalent in our local DIY market.
And on to a few more pictures...
Full view of the upper two-thirds:
Most of the vegetation was done by Mrs Zafarelli in the night before we left for Tactica. Scratchbuilt tree, lots of repainted plastic plants, dyed foam leftovers, floral wire and ground foam. And dryed potting soil underneath it all. Doesn't really show in the pictures, though :)
Lift from the lowest to the topmost level. I don't really like the finish of the rails (had nothing on hand other than MDF), and will probably rebuild them from sheet plastic.
Left cave entrance. If you enter and turn right, you will emerge in the last picture :D
(http://pictures.pardulon-models.com/workbench/archipel/archipel_10.jpg)
Detail of the crane. The claw will be replaced for something more suitable to transport goods and people up to the platform.
And a view of the front cave entrance. The machinery which is fed by the pipeline is visible in the background.

We're hoping for a full continent of Danes and Germans this year :) I'll get in touch with you guys soonish!

Brilliant!
For some reason the first thing that came to my mind was Waterworld. Maybe because I just recently watched it as I was home sick and nothing else was on...
But I could se a game based on that setting. A few survivours defending their tiny patches of dryland against "The Smokers". You could even fit your "junk" watercraft in here as well.
-
Goddamn, what a great piece of scenery!
-
My first thought was also Waterworld 8)
-
:o :o
Stunning!
No...Fecking stunning!
:-* :-* :-*
-
Wonderful! Hats off! :-*
I love and hate to see these builds as I always get pulled in a different direction from the project I'm on... Wish I lived closer to be able to come and play!
Bill
-
Very inspiring, wish I had that sort of talent.
It is obviously a docking station for a post apocalyptic airship and hangout for rogues and sky pirates. You can see the loading crane and fuel/water pipes.
-
Mind melting! Thanks for the info, get the pipes released and I'll be placing a decent order. 8)
-
You could even fit your "junk" watercraft in here as well.
It was shown on the bottom of the diorama! :D
-
:o :o :o :o :o
Absolutely STUNNING!!!!!! I don't know what else to say....thanks for sharing!!
Post Apoc with Planet of the Apes is another possibility!!
Regards,
Hitman
8)
-
I keep on coming back to this, I recon that if you made one with the shanty platforms really crammed on it'd make an excellent vertical gaming board!
-
when can i move into it?
-
:o amazing!! Those trees and shrubs are tip shelf!
It's clearly a Jamaican drug den. :)
Cheers
Matt
-
Jens, that's all very nice, but where's the nuclear plant we were talking about?! ;)
Love it. You're the only one I know (maybe apart from Karsten) that makes these over-sized pieces to actually game on.
-
Thanks for all the suggestions, people! After some discussion with Mrs Zafarelli and Zafarelli Jr, the setting will be a backwater space colony, something like the rim planets in Firefly. The settler community makes a living mainly from aquafarming, sometimes smuggling, the occasional act of piracy, other activities not excluded (one cannot be picky...). I settled for the Wargames Factory survivors, as these are sufficiently non-military and not too post-apoc. With a bit of conversion work and gruffy paintjobs, they should do fine.
The opposing force will consist of the resident aquatic population, who finally teamed up to get rid of the polluting intruders. Miniatures will be mixture of Deep Wars, Carnevale and Eden. Rival pirates might be something for the future, too.
So, progress: not too much to see at this point. I started the underconstruction of the second rock, which will be in the corner of the playing area, but that's about it. Took some thinking, though :)
... and a back shot.
-
Holy crap. This is gonna be even better!
-
I can only agree! :o :o
The only thing is, could it not be side heavy if you place a lot of metal minis in that tunnel system?
-
Andy, the thing should be sufficiently massive that a few miniatures won't influence it. Besides, half of them are plastic :) If all fails, I'll add a few supporting struts.
-
This looks promising!
8)
-
Just discovered this thread. Phenomenal work as always Zaferelli. I shall follow this thread in eager anticipation of the next instalment.
-
I just discovered this too. Absolutely amazing. I'd love to game on this. A table of them would look amazing. :D
-
Finished covering the second rock in foam. Gaps will be filled tomorrow, then on to texturing the surface. Looks small compared to the first one, but still stands 60 cm tall. I have no idea where to store them once I'm done...
And a comparison shot with one the minis I'll be using.
-
Astonishing. Well done Jens. I think building things upwards is the secret of your success! :)
-
That looks brilliant Jens!
-
Coming along very nicely...
-
Rope bridges next?
-
Been following this on the FB thread, but just wanted to add my adoration. Outstanding as usual!
-
Thanks people!
No noteworthy progress on the rock, but I managed to paint the first six inhabitants. I'm actually rather pleased with these. Need a couple more, though. Now, can anyone recommend another source for realistically proportioned 1/56 miniatures besides Wargames Factory?

-
Unfortunately I missed this first time round :(
I'm glad I've caught it now though 8)
Absolutely splendid Jens, first class once again :-* :-* :-*
Love everything about them :)
I can see these being done for VSF Venus when we move from Mars :D
cheers

First of the antagonists...
Priceless! What the heck is that thing?? lol
-
Brilliant, Jens! This is going to be another of your masterpiece terrains ...
:-*
-
Stunning!
Great figures to go with the stacks.
8) :-* 8)
Also curious to know what that 'thing' started life as....
As for realistically proportioned figures: Wouldn't Hasslefree be just right for your needs?
;)
-
Well, the 'thing' is one of the few sentient species of the colony planet, at the moment rather pissed off that the colonists have started to cultivate their spawn for their rather beautiful hides (and probably for food, as well). I've got a model for this, which adds a bit of spice to this, too, just no pictures at the moment. This is where the conflicts sets in :)
Hasslefree was actually among my favorites, but I stumbled over the survivor boxes at Tactica and simply couldn't resist 8) Does anyone have comparison pics between the two? I have checked the Scale-O-Matic (TM), but couldn't find any.
-
I'll go and take a comparison shot of a Hasslefree mini and Wargames Factory survivor for you.
-
Im seconding rope bridges!
-
Andrew, Alfrik, rope bridges are on the menu already 8)
Gutbukkit, thanks! Looking forward to them!
-
I finally took a comparison shot. Officer Nick on the left is on the small side compared to most Hasslefree.
-
i think i'm right in saying that thing started off as a warmachine troll of some sort?
-
Seems like one of the deepwars minis I would say.
-
Seems like one of the deepwars minis I would say.
you may be right, i hadn't considered that.
-
Gutbukkit, thanks! Hasslefree seems to be a perfect match!
The Thing is indeed from Deep Wars. I was a bit miffed by the casting, though. Had to spend quite some time to work the metal blob in his face into something resembling teeth.

No worries :) I think they mix well too. I'm thinking of basing my Wargames factory survivors as you have. It looks effective and it's nice and simple. Can't wait for the next instalment.
-
Missed the last couple of pages...Stunning! I would love to meet you and do some terrain, get AndyM in on the act, unfortunately; the distance...
-
Something sinister is at work - because I also missed these awesome pages. Well done.

Well, if you make it to gothenburg in august ;)
-
I'll be away on vacation for the next week, but I'll take all my hobby stuff with me, so I hope there will be plenty more pictures afterwards 8)
In the meantime, here are a few WIP pictures of various things for the project.
Not sure how this'll turn out. I'm not entirely happy with the proportions - it would make a good freighter in 15 mm, but it seems like neither fish nor fowl in 28. We'll see.

Liking all of this 8)
Maybe the boat could have some extra platforms added to it to make the overall size larger?
cheers
James
-
Wow, just wow :-*
-
Looking lovely mate!
And the size makes it perhaps a smaller fishing boat?
-
Cracking mate! :o 8)
Those guns look great for many things, are you planning on casting them? Are you also planning and detailing the feet a bit more? Maybe panels or sumit?
-
Yeh, that gun is great!
-
your work is so awesome, i am digging this thread. :) :) :)
-
Thanks!
Of course I'll cast the gun, and of course I'll detail the foot some more :)
-
:o Wow! You're like some sort of wargames Midas... Everything you touch turns into scenery gold!
Size and shape wise that boat of yours looks rather a bit like those charter sport fishing boats you see a lot around florida. You know the ones with those tall tube-frame platforms over the cabin?
One of those could be a nice looking match with the warm climate your rock islands evoke?
And a further source for conflict with the waterfolk: "And stop fishing up our pets dammit!"
-
That would be quite the swanky looking boat. 8)
-
Autonomous area defence system for the radar station.
what kind of glue do you use on the plastic and does it weld or fuse the pieces together ? ???
-
Managed to complete the gun last week, as well as a different weapon option:
The rocket launcher might need a few more details, not sure.
After some fiddling around with the MDF boat, I really couldn't come to terms with the boat, and started to build a new one from scratch o_o Here is the start, lots of plastic pieces cut to shape. The topmost piece shows the sectional drawing I used to measure the heights of the individual ribs.
For most of the time, I forgot to take pictures of the process, so all I can say is that this turned into this:
... and then somehow into this:
Foredeck and afterdeck can be taken out at the moment. I'm considering turning it either into a small fishing cutter or a boat with a long tail outboard, which seem to be quite common in Asia.
Gun bunny, I use plastic glue (the weldy stuff) and CA glue. Depends on the situation - plastic glue is better if you need to be able to correct positioning for some time. The solvent needs to evaporate completely before it can be sanded, though. CA glue is the better choice if you want to continue working quickly. Or the only choice if you want to glue materials other than sheet polystyrene. Most of the pipe materials used here are ABS, which doesn't work with plastic glue. Gluing to puttied sections also won't work.
-
Excellent :-* :-*
I think a few access panels on the rocket launcher would work well :)
cheers
James
-
Loving it mate! :-*
Maybe I should build that other boat I promised you a decade ago lol
It's interesting to see how we both approach the build totally different. Well not very different, but you are more precise and, ehhm teutonic with the precise cuts and premeasuring ;)
-
Excellent :-* :-*
I think a few access panels on the rocket launcher would work well :)
cheers
James
I wis thinking the same thing. One or two greebles to break up those heavy feet might be good too.
-
Some progress on the boat. The hull is cast from resin, the rest is polystyrene scratchbuilding. Mostly not glued down for the most part, though. The outboard is borrowed from the raft I built last year. But since that is intended to take part in the same scenario, I'll have to build another one eventually.
Also, the moulds for the gun are ready, and I managed to paint the first cast over Easter. No pictures yet, though.
-
Looks great!
-
Love the canopy addition, makes it look like its from the far east 8)
cheers
James
-
This game "board" is such a great idea. I am so impressed by what you've done!
I really like the boat size, shape, and class. Reminds me of James Bond and the African Queen merged together, somehow.
Those Louisiana swamp boats could be cool and appropriate for this, too: https://www.google.com/search?q=swamp+air+boat&client=firefox-a&hs=jMl&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=sb&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=TfRWU-7GJcGsyATFy4GQDw&ved=0CDkQsAQ&biw=1197&bih=629
Have you considered some all-wood platforms sticking out of the water? Those could be located between some of giant rocks and provide some shooting locations.
Also, if you hang most of the vegetation from some of those rocks that are too small for a mini to stand on, you'll be able to put up plenty of plants and keep clear all the levels where the minis would stand.
If this actually is for docking airships, perhaps leaving in all those toothpicks might make sense. Just an idea.
-
Excellent work Zaf! I love it all! You're an amazing wiz with the old white stuff(plastic card)
-
Great boat designs and builds. :-*
-
Ooh, I do like Erik's idea about the wood platforms.
-
Thanks people!
Jim, my main reference was indeed the riverboat from Rambo 4, so yes, far east :)
Erik, some great ideas, thanks! Leaving those toothpicks is not an option, though. I ended up wearing thick leather gloves during the construction - nothing I would inflict upon the players.
And there already are wooden platforms, and not only planned :) Here is a picture of the setup from the Tactica site, where you can see two of them (I hope the Tactica people don't mind me deeplinking it). With the raft and a couple of boats, I hope the surface will be sufficiently covered.
-
That, my good man, is absolutely awesome :-* :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Thats great Zaf!! :o :o :o How did you achieve the water effects?
-
The water is an old picture frame 8) The colour is painted, and the waves are done with Vallejo Gel Denso on the glass. The surf around the rocks and the raft are made from cling film, draped around the things on location (actually scrounged from Wargames Foundry, as we forgot to bring our own :))
-
Just brilliant 8)
-
Fantastic work :-* :-* :-*
Cling film is wonderful stuff,I used it for my trout jumping out of the water, which was sadly unused...
I am very inspired by this,very :D
-
Bloody hell, Jens! :-*
I mean, it looks awful and you should really toss it in a courier pack to Sweden just to get rid of it ::)
-
Magnificent!
-
More work on the boat. I made a new canopy from Sculpey and a bit of Greenstuff, and also started to dress the surfaces with something resembling planking. I'm afraid most of the detailing is lost in the blurry pictures, though ::)

:-*
I am used to you making wonderful stuff with 'hard edges' but that canopy shows the many strings to your bow.
Top notch!
8) 8)
-
More or less finished the rear canopy, and started working on the front one.

The fenders will be drilled out in time, and I still need to make some interior (seats, stowage boxes etc.), and worst of all, a new engine. But otherwise, I guess I'm slowly getting there :)
-
Beautiful!
-
Indeed. A lovely boat. Well done.
-
Great stuff 8) 8)
cheers
James
-
Nearing completion. The connection between the supports and the rear canopy is driving me crazy, but otherwise, progress is good 8) First two molds were poured this evening, so expect a casting of the hull and canopies come Friday.
Whole thing is spray-primed to check for errors (and hide glue stains). Seating is still missing, obviously.

Wait, you're casting that? For sale?! :-*
What else - Zaf does run a terrain/accessory/the odd mini store after all. ;)
-
First casting painted 8). This model is actually a gift for my son's confirmation tomorrow, so I had to scratchbuilt a few parts, as not all the parts are molded yet.
Fram, yes, it will be released by Pardulon eventually. Might take a few weeks though.

Very nice indeed!

Zafarelli Jnr should be very happy with his gift.

that is gorgeous! :) :) :) :o

Blooming lovely. There is a fantastic amount of detail and texture in that boat. The fabric top at the rear is superbly sculpted!!!!!! :-* you are a craftsman sir.
Cheers
Matt

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but was wondering how long before we see the boat in your shop?
An amazing and inspiring thread, that I keep returning to, now bookmarked in my inspirations file.
-
Sorry for the late reply, was on holiday with the family and didn't catch up with the forum. The project is not dead, btw. merely dormant. It'll hopefully be shown at Gubbspel Galore at the end of August, so it should pick up speed again real soon now.
Regarding the boat, it's almost done. Basically, it boils down to taking decent pictures and putting it in the shop. Expect something within a week or so.
-
... and here it is, available as of now.
(http://pardulon-models.com/media/image/boot_01.jpg) (http://pardulon-models.com/de/detail/index/sArticle/192)
Thanks for looking!
-
Absolutely wonderful, going onto my shopping list for the end of August.
-
Wonderful! One of the nicest hulls I've seen too - great lines!
-
great looking model
-
Lovely model :-* :-* :-*
Great paint job as well
-
Jens, that is a gorgeous boat :-*
-
Wonderful Jens :-* Love this thread!
-
Great paintjob mate! :-*
Reminds me that I have to build the third one... Damn. No time!
-
You know, the spires here give me a few other ideas for things that I'm considering now. Use some of the cotton sheeting and stretch it out around the bases and cover the table with the spires poking out with bridges and more natural trails to make something that fits some of the mythic east style stuff...cloud top monasteries and the like
-
Damn... :-* How did I ever miss this.
-
Only two weeks left, so here we go:)
Construction of the suspension bridges, including an impromptu rig to bend the wires for the handrail:

Overall view:
As you can see, most of the rooms already have their purpose, except for the third floor. So far, we have (from the bottom up):
- harbour area
- storage area
- generator room
- ?
- control room
Ideas what to put on 3rd floor would be highly welcome :)
-
Genius!
I love the way that you are building those walkways.

If you get stuck, a barrack/bunk room will always fit in.
-
That's a great idea for the table corner :-* :-* :-*
cheers

My word, what a project! I can't believe I've only just seen this - absolutely stunning! :o And I must have one of those boats!! :P

+1
Get some concession to living space in there, even if it's not for sleeping.
-
I vote for a medical room :)
A most cool project - love it! 8)

barracks and med lab! wall mounted collapsing bunks, med lab bits in wall nooks covered by med techs bunk, sooo many possibilities...
-
:-* it.
Is it tipsy?
Bar/lounge but more serious stuff like a lab/dining area/quarters/office would be fine too.
Great way to make the rope bridge.
-
I believe that when you google "awesome", it redirects you to this thread :o

Bar/lounge
A hive of villainy and scum!! Just what those human pests need after all their scavenging, polluting and murdering upon the fair seas and once pretty coastlines. :D your blue aquatic monsters can try to cleanse the source of the humans power ;)
Cheers

(still picking my jaw from the floor)

Now, can anyone recommend another source for realistically proportioned 1/56 miniatures besides Wargames Factory?
If you can find them, the Hunger Games figures are nice. You will need to remove them from the pedestals they come on though. BTW I really like the boat. Looking forward to seeing it in production.

Thanks for the kind words, and all the suggestions, people :) For third floor, I've settled for some sort of reclining area for the hard-working people living on the outside, including bar, cards table, dart board and sofa corner. No pictures yet, though.
HerbyF, thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into those eventually.
Two rooms almost finished now. Didn't manage to take a decent picture of the control room, though, so here are two shots of the generator room:

And another one, with the lighting temporarily installed:

I was about to write: 'Bloody Brilliant!' when I saw the first picture, but have decided to amend that to 'Holy Sheet!', having seen the lighting in the second.
'Holy Sheet!'

pocoloco, no blinking lights. The lighting is just a simple, ready-to-use kit I picked up for 2 Euros or something past Christmas. On or off are the choices.
Anyway: Bar, detailing pending. Thankfully, most of the interior could be used from a previous project. Obviously, there is a disagreement going on regarding the last trick played.

Outer facade of Rock II. Rock I and II will also be connected with a bridge similar to the one connecting the two spires. Also, a few structures will grow on the platforms. Vegetation will be hopefully done tonight.

And a preview of what will be going on at sea-level.

Good looking rock facade already 8) Vegetation will surely look great on it.
Sadly the third pic isn't showing.

Oops. Now it does ;-)
