I’m beginning preparations for my Rugged Adventures Pulp game at the Trumpeter Salute (http://Trumpeter Salute) Con in Vancouver, April 4th, 5th & 6th. This year’s scenario will require that some of the participating scoundrels dig into places they should better have left alone. As such I need a steam shovel so I decided to scratch build one up using a Leddo lorry as the basis. I thought it might be fun to post the progress.
Here is the basic start. I’ve used hobby brass and corrugated styrene sheets to build the basic box. The rear wheels of the lorry have been replaced with tracks from a 20mm scale French tank from Rafm. The top of the steam engine is a cap from a bottle of eye drops with some brass tubing. So far I’ve glued everything together with epoxy.

Oho! That's looking mighty fine.
-
Oh yes, I do like the look of this, keep the photos coming! :-*
I like the chair in the back, is that where the operator sits when he's on his tea-break?
-
Oho! That's looking mighty fine.
Oh yes, I do like the look of this, keep the photos coming! ....
What they said!
-
Oh lordy, now this is going to be good!
-
Looking good! ;)
-
Hey I really "dig" this idea :o :o :o (sorry I could not resist) I look forward to seeing your future progress in pictures
-
That looks like a good start!
This is looking increasingly like the Trumpeter Salute that I don't make it too, after being at five of the last six, because work is likely shipping me up to northern Alberta to help run a project there from about mid-March to mid-April...
Somebody take lots of good photos of Mr. Murch's game, please!
-
That is looking mighty fine so far Bob.

Nice work, does this mean that you will be creating a pack of engineers and crew to go with it 8)
-
I'm working on some construction workers. The jackhammer guy is done as is an older fig with a sledge hammer but I haven't begun the others. I should do that...
Any suggestions on characters? A guy leaning on his shovel and a riveter are my thoughts right now.
-
... a foreman and an overseer with a clipboard.
-
I found a nice Company B (http://www.companyb.biz/) fig to be my shovel operator.

-
I just noticed that Company B (http://www.companyb.biz/) make a bulldozer! I'm adding that to my Trumpetor scenario as well. Now I need to call Bruce at Company B to order one.

Great start on the build! Really looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

Steam shovels are cool! Just what the doctor ordered for battling those pesky lost world dinos.

The build is almost done. I'll add some rivets here and there and then its on to painting.

That is magnificent, love it!
-
Interesting build :)
-
Looks awesome! ;D
-
Built in record time. Looks spot on, too. :-* :-*
-
Looking really good!
-
Love it... bring on the Alien Queen!
-
At the risk of repeating myself - I really dig it :-* :-* :-*
Marvelous work as always.
-
Simply marvelous!!
A well crafted undertaking, I'm impressed.
I am quite close to declaring this the feline posterior.
I Like it!! A LOT!!
Though I have one small concern: she seems a bit nose light...
The truck front end seems a bit truncated, unfinished. With all the weight, and work, in the rear perhaps you might consider something to offset all that, a winch, or a weight rack or a plough blade?
In art, as in life, balance is as important as she is delicate...

Gotta agree with everyone else, this is good work!!

It's a terrible thing to be stuck with your ass in the air.
What?
:D
Very cool steam shovel!
-
Ass kicking lol lol...and so quick! Great work Bob.

The heaviest part of any Steam Shovel will be the boiler. In this case, you can see the boiler is pretty clearly right over the main treads which bear the weight. The truck front is a rather unconventional add-on, but is interesting and simply adds a set of steering gear and a better driving position for those times the steam shovel needs to drive down regular roads. The tracks are still the main weight-bearing and driving element though.
-
Wonderful build! :-*
-
Love the steam shovel, splendid work.

Steam Shovels really are the greatest. When I was a wee lad there was a TV show called "Mr Squiggle" and on it was puppet steam shovel that would squirt white powder from his stack when he was excited....it would go all over the female host.

I foresee a court case soonish! :o

Or if its going to drive into the deep jungle in search of a mysterious lost temple. The truck front is a little unusual but the truck model gave me a base to start building onto which made the job much faster. There might be precedent in the real world but so far all I have found is this picture of an old toy steam shovel/truck combo:

Of course, it's just like it was built for that! lol

I love the patina of age and wear on this toy. :-*
For a moment I thought you had painted your incredible model already!
I look forward to seeing how you paint yours.
-
I'm into the painting process now. I decided to use some water-solvable oil paints I received for Christmas. Oil paint will allow for some interesting blending and a more earthy patina I think. The down-side is the drying time which can be several days.
-
Cool, I'm looking forward to seeing how the oil paints look.
-
Beautiful!
-
I'm well into the painting. Once the basic oil paint coat is dry I'll be onto weathering.

That's already looking MIGHTY fine.
-
Looks fantastic! I am surprised though that no one has asked when you will be releasing a steam truck? You are going to be making this a mold right? lol
-
Looks fantastic Bob. Great build. :o :-*

That really is looking great Bob.

Magnificent! :o
(...although the lorry cabin would probably prevent the rotation of the machine to put the earth in heap on the side... but hey, it would dig holes all right anyway).
-
My bulldozer from Company B arrived! It's a beautiful model. The heavy construction equipment is coming together. I'll be painting Mike Mulligan this weekend. More pics soon.
-
Mike Mulligan & Mary Ann along with the Company B Bulldozer saw action at the Trumpeter Convention last week in Vancouver. Thuggee cultists pretending to be laborers at the dig waited for an opportune moment to bring out the strangling scarves and attack the hard-hats. Mary-Ann scooped up the Mad Guru and placed him on the roof of the ruined temple.

Lovely stuff! The steam shovel is a nice piece of work. :-*
(Um... the face of that statue in the lower picture looks remarkably like the late Richard Briers (Good Life/Good Neighbours) to me.) lol
-
That was one fun game Bob! Many thanks! I'm about halfway through painting my Radon Zombies which are a treat to paint.
Monkey drive boat! Monkey drive boat!!
-
Thanks for playing!
I love it when BoBo steals the scene. The kids at the Saturday matinee went wild when the chimp took control of the ship and crashed it into the warf.
-
Very nice 8)
cheers

Great stuff Bob! :-* :-*
Do you have any more pics of your game?

Gary, you might want to remove or alter the image with the swastika in it (the gang of assembled nazis - it's on the dog). It its present state it creates a minor legal headache for the forum owners.

In Japan they call that Wabi Sabi and Japanese collectors will pay more for a collectible in this condition then one that's mint. ;)
In the pics, which one is Bob ?
-
He's driving the steam shovel! lol
-
I thought Wabi-Sabi was driving the Steam Shovel? o_o
-
I think Wabi-sabi was under the bulldozer...

Thanks so much for these pics, it's so great and inspiring to see Bob gaming on his great table. Amazing show!

Indeed! When you get to play with the toys right out of the Pulp Figures catalogue, well it feels pretty darn cool.
Here's to a very modest guy who does a total game build: sculpts, cuts moulds, casts and paints the minis. Then he designs builds and paints the terrain. All of it to a brilliant standard...
Thanks Bob, you really contribute something special to our little Vancouver show.

That's what he wants you to believe! Power to cloud men's minds... Just saying'.
No. Get with the program..that was The Shadow. lol ;D

Mmmm..nope. Don't recognize that quote....
-
Actually, I heard the weed of crime bears smelly odours.
-
Mmmm..nope. Don't recognize that quote....
"Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" These words were accompanied by an ominous laugh and a musical theme, Camille Saint-Saëns' Le Rouet d'Omphale ("Omphale's Spinning Wheel", composed in 1872). At the end of each episode, The Shadow reminded listeners, "The weed of crime bears bitter fruit. Crime does not pay.... The Shadow knows!"

:-I I have discovered many wonderful wargame pictures on LAF...
...but I never thought that I would also discover (some almost unknown and totally forgotten) French litterature in here! :?
