Title: Bretonnian Brigands [updated 31/8/14]
Post by: stone-cold-lead on 16 March 2014, 12:26:15 AM
Some of these models have been gathering dust for over a year but I finally managed to get the last few done to give me a unit. There are three different eras of models here, mostly 3rd edition 90/91 retainers, a 5th edition musician and an 80's man-at-arms (Foundry ex-Citadel casting and one of only a few that weren't too small).

A bit of waffling on about these on my blog (http://stonecoldlead.blogspot.co.uk/) and a few extra pics in my gallery (http://stonecoldlead.webs.com/apps/photos/album?albumid=14606491).

very nice transitions and smooth paint work. I like the bottom of the shields being dirty and the arrow head sticking through the shield.

Brilliant as always!! ;D ;D ;D

That is very nice painting, and the little details that you have added are just right, particularly like the arrow through the shield.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

It's just one of the foot knights with a little conversion work. I've got the original model in the lead pile (I won't cut up anything unless it's a duplicate) but this one came in a job lot of models I picked up a few years back and had already had the axe cut away completely. It saved me a job so I just drilled out the hands and found some suitable brass tubing to use as a flag pole. I also rounded his helmet down so he didn't look too much of a carbon copy of the other knight. The fleur de lys  was press moulded from a 5th edition standard and the flag is tin from a tomato puree tube.

I'm dragging this thread out of obscurity because it takes me so damn long to paint anything for myself. I've got a few crossbowmen done and another on the way. There will be a fifth model added to this small unit but then I'm going to move onto some other pieces for the warband (I have more crossbowmen but really want to do a few other bits).

Still need to convert a mounted knight to use as the brigand leader and I've got a few more characterful types to add when I can.

Yeah I'll be keeping the colour scheme going with most of the other models. There'll be a few non-Bretonnian characters that won't use this colour scheme though.

More threadomancy as I've finished the fifth and final (for now) crossbowman for this little band of brigands. Took a while to find the time and the inclination to get this one finished but now it's done I'm a bit more motivated to paint up the handful of characters I'm hoping to add to the group.

Those are excellent too!  :-* I would suggest the Brigades from Red Box Games, but I doubt they would scale up with these Citadel miniatures.  Do you use inks on the skin or layers, or a combination of both?

I had hoped that the RBG stuff would be a good match but unfortunately they're not. Height is fine but the proportions of Tre's sculpts just don't fit with these old Perry's.

Skin is just layered paint although sometimes I'll add a quick very thin glaze of ink or more likely these days thinned down GW Wash at the end just to bring it all together.

Beautiful subtle work. The woodgrain on the crossbow is worth the price of entry on its own  :)
(And the rest of him is just sumptuous)
