I was lucky enough to win this on Ebay:
30 new on sprue with six poorly assembled and a bit covered in glue... so the six that weren't on the sprues were perfect for a bit of conversion. Here is the first one:
There are areas that I think need changing... but it is a gradual process so the next one will reflect the changes.
Comments welcome :)
I have enough bolters, Catachan Lasguns, Cadian Lasguns and the ones that came in this box of guard... which weapons do you think would be best for the troops (I am not sold on the old school lasguns :( ).
-
Great work so far.
I was always a fan of the old Squats.
Lasguns are too skinny, not chunky enough for Squats. Go with bolters.
Looking forward to the continuation of this project.

You weren't lucky you just slavishly sated your need for shiney shiney! ;).
Looking good though. Nice.

Some paint (the base is yet to be painted):

Looks pretty good to me. The old school lasguns would look good I think if shortened to carbines, I personally would go with bolters.
Keep it up!
-
Brilliant!

Love it!
:-* :-*

Cheers :)
The next one is in progress and will, hopefully, be better proportioned (shorter torso). I've been asked for a guide as well so that will be done while I'm converting.
-
The next one has been finished. In my opinion, the proportions are much more Squat like than the first one but the bolter looks a bit big for him... please feel free to comment :) :
And I was asked to put together a guide to make them... it is on my blog if you are interested:
http://insosworld.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/a-short-how-to-space-dwarfs.html
The next one will be a bit more involved because I'll have to sort out bent legs rather than straight ones... so a little more chopping and sculpting will be involved :) .
-
Just like what i said on the Squat FB group, these are rather good :)
-
great idea love um
-
Lookin' pretty damn good to me.
-
Cheers :)
The third one is nearly finished (he's got a lasgun and a helmet on)... just need to finish the beard and addthe arms/weapon.
I've started painting the second one but have been slow about stuff because 'life' has kept me busy this week :)
There should be more pix later today :)
-
Clever stuff! They look great!
-
Cheers :) .

Here's Squat number 2 with some paint on him:

The fourth Squat has now been sculpted:

The third one has been base-coated and washed ready for highlights and basing :) .

Another distraction... and funnily enough, another desecrated classic (in this case, a Warzone Vulkan battlesuit):
The one on the left is a dreadnought for my Dwarfs and the one on the right is a Dwarf with Tau kit... just for the hell of it :)

I have been loving these conversions as usual but you are right, such SACRILEGE to dissect a Vulkan like that. No matter the koolness actor.
Keep em coming.

Great job!
I'm liking the weapon conversion and the dreadnaught is looking good.

Well... I have 32 of the Vulkans and this one was a bit chewed up (no backpack, dodgy leg) so I thought... what the heck :) .
He will be very much on his own though (unless I decide that I MUST make another one... but there are no plans to).

It both hurts and feels good to look at it., I am so confused. ;-)
What is the source of the legs on this little buddy?
Saw this over on Bugman's thought you might like this topic.

Those linked-to Squats look pretty cool but I think he messed around with sizing in photoshop because those scout shotguns are massive in real life.
The legs on the Dread are from one of these (originally from Micropanzer, they are now available from Rebel Miniatures):

###EDIT###
Sorry, I misread the question as "what are the legs on this, little buddy?" so you got the Dread legs instead of the Squat legs. The Squat legs are chopped down, plastic Catachan Jungle Fighter legs... but I didn't really chop them down enough because he is too tall. For the next ones, I am using Chopped down Tau Firewarrior legs with Catachan feet :).

Yeah, you can see that was a comment in the thread as well. But weapons are more easily modified than the proportions of the figures. The link was more of a "hey look at these converted dwarf/squat troops" type of comment. :-)

LOL you got it right the first time. "Little Buddy" referred to the Dread companion. But nice of you to reread and add more info. It is always appreciated. :-)

I've got this far with a few more sculpts... and the dread is painted:

I am still trying to get my head around how well this works.
Genius.
:D
-
Wonderful, wasn't sure about the Tau usage at first but you have blended them well together :)
Would love to see some Chaos ones made
-
Cheers, Mason :)
To be fair, the old IG miniatures are perfect for this because of their weird proportions and what better way to make extinct minis than to convert extinct minis :) ?
...and when the same amount of actual, plastic Squats cost around £200.00+ the £38.00 I spent on my 36 IG makes the project excellent value :D.
Chico, I can make chaos ones later but first I need to focus on getting the planned 42 finished (a platoon of standard Squats, a command squad and a sniper squad using the Tau bodies).

Yep, he needs to get a squad up and running sop he can start playing as I hear Squats are official again.
Oh wait, that's right. That Inso guy doesn't play. He just converts beautiful pieces to make us hate him. :-)

It's all about the muse :)
If I get too distracted by the next big thing, the current one gets shelved and doesn't get finished... so I want to get these done before I move on :).
No, I don't game... but that doesn't mean you should hate me :'( :D

If you look again. I didn't say you was hated for not gaming but for making beautiful models or conversions. Got to make sure the hatred is placed where it belongs. :-)
Now get back to the 42.

"The 42".
Sounds good for a name. :)

So what your saying is that we can make beautiful things together?
Now that is just getting creepy. :-*

Oh, so those flowers weren't from you then? :-(
Maybe they was from David. I am going his way next week so he can show me how to be a painter. :-)

Five more to finish the first squad :)
-
Arhh some of the best yet :) Good Job :)

Here is the squad of my converted Squats all together:
... and after a spot of luck on Ebay, I managed to get some proper plastic Squats (20 on the sprue!). Unfortunately, two of them didn't have heads so I needed to make them:
As you can see, there is a difference in size and proportion so I will be using the proper Squats as a heavy weapon platoon with self propelled, heavy weapons (with stowage space for equipment and personal weapons). I am thinking of using the little gun-drones from Anvil Industries:
http://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=114&product_id=313
... another diversion...
-
Cracking stuff. Makes me want to hurry my 2nd edition 40k project along...
-
:D
In another completely random change of direction... I decided to save a few pennies and make my own mobile weapon platforms. I found some Epic landraiders, some Imperial Guard heavy weapons and some plastic bricks and have got this far in the WIP:
I have another six to build but they are likely to be a mix of heavy bolters and missile launchers (or just heavy bolters)...
I have also started building the Warlord. This is a very early WIP:

Good job Bud, really enjoying how your using what you have to the full rather then just throwing cash (Like I do) at OOP figures.
-
Brilliant!
The use of those Land Raiders is a touch of genius.
