Title: Skirmish Rules For Zombie game
Post by: Marauderman on 06 April 2014, 06:39:33 AM
Hi every one, I was looking to play some Skirmish type Zombie and maybe even Post-Apocalyptic type games. My normal group of Friends and I have been playing RPG's for the last 30 years, D&D, Rifts and different versions of d20 Stars games over that time. We only have time to really catch up as a group and game in person every few months.
I was looking to play some thing of a skirmish type Zombie and even possibly a Post-Apocalyptic type game.
I have looked at The Pulp Ally Free Demo rules and the Savage Worlds Showdown System for Miniatures. Both look good in their own ways from the free Demo version of the rules I seen.
Zed or Alive The Zombie Miniatures Game which is on Kickstarter at the moment uses the Savage Worlds Showdown system.
Can any one give me their opinion on the two games and if the full version of Pulp Ally would handle a modern Zombie and Post-Apocalyptic setting or am I better off backing the Zed or Alive setting. Pulp Ally looks like a fun and quick system to pick up and play while Showdown System seems to have a few more options and a little more to take in. I have only had a quick read through both Free Demo rules Sets so I may not be being fair to ether game systems.
Thanks to any one who can give me some help in this area.

there is quite a few rules out there

Bio Syndrome - its free. I know a link is on kickstarter.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1792322775/bio-syndrome-a-survival-horror-table-top-war-game?ref=live
Their KS just wrapped up the rules are pretty cool. The KS helped them polish them up a bit.

Zed or Alive.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rustdevilgames/zed-or-alive-the-zombie-miniatures-game
Their lowest price to back is 5 bucks
Havent played it yet because the game will not release until the KS funds.
I backed it for the rules.

No More room in hell

Its one of my favorites. It is D10 system and the rules are quite good. Bio Syndrome and this one I think are comparable. Except Bio Syndrome is free and uses D6.
They have 2 expansions for NMRIH A german nazi expansion and the Blob.

All things Zombie
The rules are a little tougher to understand but one you understand it, it plays pretty good.

He is also doing a KS
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1377449800/hospital-911-an-all-things-zombie-15mm-miniatures
The rules work for 28mm also. I am in for the rules on this KS.

those are all great games and have their pluses and minuses. (of course I havent played ZED)

I hope I gave you some info that is useful.

There's a PA Rules reference thread here (for published rules only)

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=61750.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=61750.0)

We have a LAF policy that allows kickstarters that are open to have one [KICKSTARTER] thread only.  Please therefore consider/debate any kickstarters that do not yet have published rules in their relevant thread.

Any more discussion of active kickstarters in this thread and I will delete it.

Completed kickstarters can of course be discussed as their rules are 'available' for free or paid' public use.

Thanks.

Edited for typos etc

For "casual" play, and easy to grasp rules, if you can afford it, I higly recommend the ZOMBICIDE starter box, or better still, the PRISION OUTBREAK Zombicide 2nd season (or both + toxic city mall).

For FREE rules I always go to AKULA's TOTAL A.R.S.E.

You can get the rules here:

http://akulasrules.blogspot.mx/2011/01/akulas-rules-skirmish-edition-arse.html

We have had some real great fun with Akula's rules.

Hope that helps.

welcome to the section! mind your step in the toxic sludge!

You have come to the right place my friend. This area is ripe w/ zombie and post apocalyptic rules and some great examples of painting for this type of genre.

Everyone has guided you in the right direction. If you happen to play a few post what you think here for others to follow =)

My two favorites are
1  - Two Hour Wargames All Things Zombie - it is also very good for solo or coop play which to me is critical for zombie skirmish games. It is well supported and available as book and or PDF.

2 - Ambush Alley Games Ambush Z - really well done and also can work well coop.

Another vote for All Things Zombie!
If you want to see how a solo campaign of ATZ runs/plays, look at the blog by Vampifan here;
http://vampifansworldoftheundead.blogspot.com/ (http://vampifansworldoftheundead.blogspot.com/)
He has great AARs of his past campaign using a prior edition of the ATZ rules as well as AARs for a second campaign featuring the current ATZ rules.

We've switched to using Pulp Alley for almost all our skirmish game settings. It's an amazingly flexible system and works quite well for modern zombie games. You'd want to get the Perilous Island book as well, so you had access to all the weird abilities too.

Wow thanks every one for the great quick informative replies. You have all given me so much to think about.

Alcide Nikopol thanks for the information about Pulp Ally and the extra add ons, this systems seems very good and flexable and quick to pick up to learn.

Silent Invader thanks for The PA rules reference Thread

Magokiron thanks for the tip about AKULA'S Total A.R.S.E  rules, I remember seeing a great thread about AKULA AAR Get Mat to the Church on time, which really got my attention a when I saw it a while back.

Magokiron thanks about Zombicide idea, I already have that and I am about half way through painting up  all the miniatures, yet to play it, but knowing my gaming group they will enjoy but always like to think out side the box when gaming, we have been playing different RPG for the last 30 years and I thought a zombie skirmish game with a bit of flexibility would suit them as one of my players always seems to pull a MACGYVER moment. The AKULA'S Total A.R.S.E seems a very quick to learn and fun system.

Then there is always The Dead Walk Again , which have the bonus of being free .So if you don't like them you've not wasted any money.

I'd recommend a free set of lite skirmish rules written by the great AKULA, a prominent poster on this site.

His website: http://akulasrules.blogspot.com/

The card-driven activation lets the gamemaster set the "threat level", and offers an irregular tempo quite different from the standard "I-go-You-go" of some games.

Some houserules we've developed in play:

Whenever the Ace of Spades is drawn, ending the current Turn, I place another black card into the deck which increases the number of zombie actions available. It doesn't change the odds that much, but it does spook the players.

That's a nice addition to rise the danger level of the game.

Must try it soon.

In my gaming group we have designed at least half a dozen new zombies for the AKULA game, including longtongues, soldiers, fatties, ragers, toxics, crawlers, smarts, etc.

thanks for sharing.
