Title: Mcfonz's ongoing fantasy Project
Post by: mcfonz on 08 April 2014, 09:54:52 AM
When I bought Of Gods and Mortals - it was with the idea that I could use them for mixing and matching my joint likes of myth based games and fantasy. Some may even argue that some myths such as the Greek ones were in fact fantasy for them  and so the two are not so far apart!

I also wanted a small enough and simple enough game that I could introduce to the young people I work with in my job as a carer at a children's home.

I thought I would start off making a list for Goblins as they have always been a force I love mucking around with:

Quote
Troops/Mortals:
Goblins (CO) - Q4, C2 with the option of being armoured for additional points (represented by shields etc).
Goblin Archers (OO) - Q4, C2 with shooter (medium).
Wolf Riders (OO) - Q4, C3 with mounted, long move and the option to be medium shooters.
Goblin Bodyguard (CO) - Q3, C3 with armoured and rare(8).

Hero's / Legends:
Goblin Hero - Q3, C3 with armoured, greedy and traitorous strike. Could be mounted on a wolf which I haven't pointed up for this yet but essentially I just bump up the C by one to represent the ferociousness of the wolf and add long move and mounted.

Goblin Shaman - Q3, C1 and may choose up to three 'spells' from the following: Confound, Lightening, Transfix, Trickster and Prophecy.
Again, the shaman could be mounted on a wolf which would boost his C by one and add long move and mounted.

I am contemplating using General's as Gods and just suggest that instead of being dead when they are beaten they are knocked to the ground and it is only the cheers and encouragement of their troops that give them the strength to pick themselves up to fight again.

I plan to use some GW ones at the moment - had some kicking around for a while now. Need to complete doing the wolf riders who are actually riding wargs!

So I decided to try and get a unit or two done of the human faction which is based upon a Romano British theme.

Happy with how the damage/weathering is going. Just need to do it on the other two that have been transfered up and then do the others in the unit.

Wow, that weathering is done very nicely!

Those are superbly done!  :-* :-*

Are the battle damage bits all just paint? (Even the cut bits?)

Yes - it's all painted on. First image shows what they were like with the basic shield painted white and the black transfer applied. For the sake of completeness, the same four miniatures:

Apologies for the diminished quality of photo's - the light has gone now and this is taken with artificial light. I also sculpted the hand on the chap with his hand gripping his shield . . . . .

A little bit of movement on this project - although only in the form of two terrain features of the same kind!

Need to make more stuff! Another two tree elements on the way as well. A small woods could then be made as well as four small copses.

A mixture of GW (various ages), Hasslefree and Foundry in there.

And for the latest miniature to be added to the realm:

The Fairglades is made up of many different types of terrain, the central areas are mainly flat but scattered with low lying marsh and wooded areas.

In one such place, not far from a small village, one of the military's patrols are moving through investigating reports of a missing hunter and eerie noises coming from the trees at night.

Not one for superstition Marcus Brillus led his men to the huntsmans lodge, close to some ancient ruins of a house, which possibly served the same purpose.

Shortly after their arrival an evil laugh could be heard which was followed by the dry scraping of bone and bone combined with the sound of rusted links of chainmail and the creaking of armour. The undead host were upon them!

The forces line up to face battle.

Both sides advance, boldly, towards the enemy.

Battle is met! In the center undead Draugr move to engage the human infantry, only to find a trap sprung and themselves fighting in a fray with two enemy units!

The third unit of the patrol moves to the rear of the hunting lodge as to prevent a skeleton unit from flanking around to the back of the fray happening yards away.

The skeletons threatening to flank - advance from the depths of the woods.

Meanwhile, back in the center, Marcus is joined by his junior officer who both wade in to fight like true heroes alongside their men. As they do so, a black shadow darts from the trees towards the melee. The wraith is unleashed!

The right hold fast, preparing for the undead charge they are sure is to come.

In the center the battle rages on.

The wraith then joins in the fight. Then the Wight Lord ponders before issuing a silent command to the skeletons threatening to flank, fearing that the Draugr are doomed and need relief, their advance turns towards the center.

It is not clear as to why, but the skeletons on the undead right remain ever watchful, stoic and silent bar the sound of a rhythmic beating drum, their tattered banner and rags flapping in the breeze.

At this point, the battle reaches it's climax. Marcus and his men, who have battled for so long, start to struggle against the tide that is now upon them. Both units of skeletons advanced into the fray in the center - the draugr who have seen many of their number slain, only to be risen from the dead by their master - have held on long enough for strength to arrive. The human commander now feeling that his fate may lie in front of him, spurs on his men for one last push.

Marcus is slain, his heroics unrewarded, his men - in shock, recoil with the undead host biting at their heels all of the way.

The undead go on to slaughter most of the patrol, the junior officer falls to the Draugr and the remains of the patrol flee for their lives. It looks like superstition is some times well founded. The senate will have to be alerted, should one of the patrol make it back to the village . . . . . .

Edit: My opponent for the game was Daemonforge and the rules used to depict the game were Of Gods and Mortals, without using any Gods, just Legends and Mortals with units built using the system in the book. :)

Right, so onwards and upwards, time for some hacking and sticking and I'll show you how!

Take some old school goblins - the one on the left is actually one I painted as a teenager (13/14 maybe?) some 20 years ago now. And whilst much loved, they have been sitting around fighting nothing but dust.

Then mercilessly hack off the arms and head like a zealous dwarf!!!

Add your choice of toppings, in this case night goblin archer arms (old multipart plastic versions rather than the newer ones) and common goblin heads. And then apply your taste in art work.

I am building 12 of these to become a levy archer unit for a fantastic saga (hopefully  :D )

Massive update! Seems like I am working on a fantasy table for 2017's Salute! lol

I hate doing things in a rush so I have started already.

I have started vlogging reviews and the work I am doing on the table - some vids of the start of the build here:

The latest update is:

Not as close to tolerance levels as I would have liked but this is a first for me in terms of building up something more substantial than just some very simple mdf tiles etc.

One of the main features will be a secret entrance to a dwarf hold. The very early stages look like:

I too enjoy this thread and agree with others that you're a master of miniature shields.  :-*

I note you have quite a few Miniature Paints glass bottles with the later black plastic cap. I wonder if you're still able to buy them somewhere, or are they of old stock? Ral Partha Europe doesn't sell Miniature Paints anymore and frankly in my experience what they sold was substandard as compared to the 1990s glass bottled ones I see in your pictures. I felt it was seriously diluted down and was sold in much small plastic bottles. Thus I would love to know if one can still acquire those original glass bottle Miniature Paints from somewhere.

I buy them from a little local gaming shop to Norwich. It is well known and well established to those that have been gaming for a while and predates any other such shop in Norwich by some way. The Games Room.

No idea where he gets the stock from mind you. I guess you could try looking him up on the webs and try giving him a call.

Elm Hill is always worth a little trot along even if it is just to admire Britons Arms and the way that some chap way back when decided it would be worth preserving a little bit of ye old world for future generations.

It featured in the film Stardust as well:

A couple of little image updates, sorry for any blurryness - slightly fogged up phone camera!

Latest greenstuffing on Dwarfs - three warriors to take their compliment up to 8. Two more hearthguard to take them to the same number. 3 points of Dwarfs when both units are done.

Blu-tac test assembly for an archer, arms work fine so once I have more heads I will march on with the unit of 12 as it should be relatively straightforward. Am tempted to add bowstrings too!  ;D

Rocky test pieces which will become scatter terrain for the table. Made using pollyfiller made up with PVA and crinkled foil pushed onto it. I think I over crinkled the foil on the smaller piece but the larger piece is more like what I am aiming for. Not quite hardened yet, once it is, I shall seal it with a coat of PVA.

So hear I am, on Christmas day at work, considering a list of things I definitely want to do next year hobby wise.

My fantasy table has progressed and will have to progress a lot more as it is due to be a participation game for Salute in April. Annoyingly for me, as I am very much a project butterfly, it means I need to knuckle down. I shall post some images of updates in the next couple of days if I get a chance.

I have been watching a few of the Terrain Tutor's tutorials on various aspects of the battlefield and hope to channel that into the table.

Also A Fantastic Saga has recently released rules for Goblins. This means I need to complete the Goblin and Dwarf forces I have started and start getting some game play with those. They are a must and will represent the first completed fantasy forces from me for around a decade at least.

I also want to re-visit my human faction and round their force off more so I can also start a campaign based in my own fantasy setting for which I have been building up backstory for a number of years now.

Anyway, I hope you are all having and enjoying splendid wintry holidays.

That's an amazing piece of terrain!  :-*

Wish I had room to store stuff like that.

Thanks! To be honest I have that concern too. It is for a participation game at Salute in April, so it shall sit atop the table I have made for that until then. However, afterwards I will have to consider where to store it!

The bases or the ones in the hold?

Sorry, I was out at the time and couldn't answer both at the same time, I'm home now so let me expand!  :D

The bases are from renedra:

They also do stone floor bases which might save you the time on how I did the flagstones in the Dwarfen hold.

Plasticard former and then pushed air drying clay into it.

Used filler and a paper towel to fill in-between the slabs.
