Hi all,
I just thought I should post up some pictures of some of my gangs for you. Terrible pictures on the phone, but hopefully you get the idea!
-
The mob gathering
-
Plebs and slaves throwing rocks
-
Milo and his bodyguards
-
Clodius and his bodyguards
-
Hello all
Mark, those seems to be great miniatures. :-*
When you can please post some in colour for general tips on painting.
Great ones.
Keep them coming. :)
Another one to the "dark side" of rome. lol
Wow, Milo and Clodius themselves :-*
Cheers
Rui

Hi Rui
I've been gaming this for a while. My article on it is in WSS magazine converting SAGA for street gangs. My colour pics seem a bit large to upload! Bare with me and you'll get some colour!
-
Set the dogs on 'em!
-
Ahenobarbus decides that taking a few burly gladiators with him is probably sensible!
-
Hello all
Mark, I know the rules.
Because of you i´ve ordered Wargames Soldiers and Strategy 63 to use your rules for saga. :D
Excelent ones and i´m glad you posted pictures of your work on Eric´s excelent topic. :)
To those who read this post and like saga rules please do purchase WSS 63 for Mark´s excelent Battleboard on Roman gangs/mobs.
I only played one game so far and i enjoyed a lot. I hope to game a few more soon.
Who is the manufacturer of those dogs?
Cheers
Rui
-
Thugs about to cause some mischief.
-
Great Work Mark !
you got the "style" for street fighting !
Welcome to our gentlemen club of "Street fighting in Rome" lol
Like the idea for dogs and their masters.....
Animals can play a role in the rules" Song of Shadow and dust" from Ganesha.....Dogs, chickens and donkey for example. ;D
Nearly finished my basing for my gangs. Hope pics soon available ???
cheers
Eric
-
Thanks for the welcome Eric. I am still enjoying SAGA for them at the moment. I've got a follow up campaign system I need to complete to go with it for the magazine too.
-
The sun has come up and Cicero has decided he might just have enough protection to make it to the Senate...
-
Nice work, including the graffiti!
-
Some of it is a bit rude ;D
But it all adds to the flavour!
-
Hello all
Mark, share with us the campaign please.
I also have some ideas to use with your battleboard and Simon just blew up everything when he presented that lovelly roman boat. lol
Now i want to make some roman sailors and some ancient pirates.
I might open a topic to see how people will react with this idea.
Keep it coming.
Cheers
Rui
-
Ships you say???
-
:-* :-* :-*
One i know it was converted but from whom is the bireme?
Cheers
Rui
-
The campaign will hopefully be in the magazine Rui, but essentially you will have a politician and a gang and play games to win various key locations in Rome and become elected that year by controlling the most areas. I will add in special characters and troop types (eg a lictor bodyguard unit), as well as some more formalised scenarios from the ones in WSS 63 as well as some new ones.
Cheers
Mark
-
The warship and the swan neck are grand manner. The little monoreme is a scratch build. I've another 7 done too! But not to the same display standard. I'm running a Ronan naval participation game at the Naval Wargames Show in Gosport, UK in a few months involving escorting a merchant ship past Sextus Pompey's pirates!
-
If possible, please tell when they are published.
I can order the pdf of the magazine and then print it.
Some harbour scenarios would be nice, as if gangs would try to control the contraband dealings.
You could also use roman regular forces as to stop the gangs.
cheers
Rui
-
It might be it goes on the WSS website as a free download? Guy Bowers the editor is normally pretty keen to publish my stuff.
-
That would be nice.
it would spare some money too. :D
Cheers
Rui
-
A few more patricians on the workbench.
-
Those are great, Mark! And so many minis. Are the Patricians Crusader? I love the bold colours on them.
-
Thanks Simon, you are seeing but a handful of the 120 odd I have done so far. The Patricians are Foundry figures they are also the basis of the gang leaders mostly!
-
Mark, some very nice stuff there, welcome and keep it coming. I've created a thread out of your posts. so you can post here all your lovely miniatures.
-
Thanks Prof!
-
Keep them coming Mark
Keep them coming... :-*
-
Hello Mark.
Those are great. Glad you've posted them here on Lead Adventure. Love the guy with the eye patch, and those electric blue togas on the patricians. Some real villainous looking Romans there. Pure Falco.
Cheers.
Richard
-
Thanks Richard. It was good to say hello at Salute too! Just a couple now to keep Rui happy... lol
-
The bosses. The figure on the right is a Foundry Gladiator range emperor figure with a head swap a bent arm and a gladiator. The other two are from their civilian range with a bit of modifying and extra swords of course!
-
The same fat patrician converted slightly differently!
-
Me sooo happy :-* :D
Thanks Mark
-
Sorry to ask again but who is the manufacturer of those dogs?
Cheers
Rui
-
Warlord... I think they are in the Ancient British range?
-
Many thanks Mark
I will check
Cheers
Rui
-
You can never have too many fat patricians for the mob to murder horribly :D
If I didn't have about 6 other projects already on the go, I would be sorely tempted by this Roman gangs malarkey...
(Yes, I know - only 6 projects, I am a lightweight ;))
-
"They jumped me on the way back from the taverna boss!"
-
Milo calls on his brother's gladiator school for extra muscle...
-
Bringing out the primus to intimidate the opposition.
-
Another patrician with a head and hand swap and reattach meant at a different angle.
-
Fun way of keeping track of your victory points during a game.
-
Some retired veteran legionaries making an excellent bodyguard for the latest ambitious politician working his way up the curses honorum.
-
Warlord's rather nice travelling coach.
-
:-* :-* :-*
You said 120 miniatures in your collection?
wow... :o
Just keep them coming
Excelent work and ideas Mark.
The veteran legionaires as bodyguards results very well and the painting is top class.
Cheers
Rui
-
A slave to light the way home.
-
Another gladiator
-
A few more patricians on the workbench.
excellent job mark !
You remember me that roman use other colors than red or white.
Now , because of your pics, i need to paint some of my plebs in blue or similar colors...... :'(
Like too your graffiti on the wall !
Eric
Eric
-
Hello all
Now you see why i´ve asked for color pics? :D
I was falling in the same error. o_o
Great job.
Cheers
Rui
-
I have tended to use whites, creams, browns, greys, yellows, light green and orangey russet colours for my plebs. Most of these I have tried to make more dull rather than rich bright colours. I've used brighter greens, blues and reds on my equites and patricians as well as rich merchants. For the candidates and senate members their tunics and togas get an extra white additional highlight of white!
-
A six point SAGA mob. Two points of gladiator bodyguard, another point of veteran legionaries as a bodyguard, two points of thugs and a point of great unwashed. All led by Milo the gang leader.
-
I'm really liking them! What the textured surface that you are using, please?
-
Another six point mob. This time led by Clodius. Two points of bodyguards, one of gladiator bodyguard. Two more points of thugs and another point of great unwashed.
-
Thanks Simon. The board is 6mm mdf covered in wall paper that is textured a bit like cobbles and various round and squarish pieces of card. All painted dark grey and dry-brushed up in lighter shades.
-
I'm really liking both mobs, Mark!
-
Hello all
Well done Mark. :-*
Excelent tips for my gang forces for SAGA.
One is complete, the other still has some bits to had. I have to make two to convince my older brother to game with me so everything must be doubled.
The painting tips are also very usefull.
Cheers
Rui
-
Lucretia and her ladies have been overcharging again.
-
Hi Rui,
It sounds like you are doing well. We started off with four point mobs with about 25 figures per side but it will play with less. About 17 per side is a minimum for a half decent game. I plan to do a Roman military battle board to represent the troops used by Pompey to quell the troubles. I'm intending on making these a bit smaller in number. I've another 24 odd great unwashed on the painting table too.
-
Hello Mark
My first band has 1 warlord (gang leader), 2 units of 4 bodyguards each (hearthguards) 1 unit of thugs (x8 figures - Warriors) and a unit of great unwashed (x12 figures - Levy).
That means 29 figures.
The next band will be almost the same size and configuration.
The idea of a battleboard for roman forces is great since you can do a game with roman authorities trying to keep the order on the streets or finishing with the various gangs.
One question, from whom are the 2 latest miniatures?
Cheers
Rui
-
They are by Steve Barber from his gladiator range. They are pretty small though. The women look ok, but the men look particularly small.
-
Hello all
Many thanks for the tip on Steve Barber models Mark.
The man can pass for a youngster perhaps. ;)
Cheers

I've thought about buying some of the Foundry Roman civilians, but they don't have them listed on the normal site. Aside from waiting to see if they come up on eBay under CastingRoomMiniatures, any suggestions? Are there codes for the packs?

The civilians are listed here at the Foundry :
http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/civilians-18th-century-and-ancients/ancient-civilians-collection-bcciv003/ (http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/civilians-18th-century-and-ancients/ancient-civilians-collection-bcciv003/)
in a special section about civilians and not in the Ancient Range..... ???
-
Doh! Many thanks! Simon
-
the LAF is done for this :
Mutual aid !
i'll mix mine with that one from the Foundry Mythological range :

hhuuummm... :-*
Nice ones.
I forgot to order those civilians. o_o
Cheers
Rui
-
I have a 10% discount voucher from Foundry at Salute; I think this is the time to spend it!
-
They normally do blister packs for ten pounds each at shows. If you can wait until Partizan it would save your P and P too and be a lot cheaper. I guess it depends on how many you want and how quickly!
-
I sneaked it just over the £80 for free postage (by adding a pack of mounted Generals, useful for my big battles); it worked out at £8.60 a pack. Could have been worse...
-
Lucky fellows. :?
I dont get that to Portugal. :'(
Cheers
Rui
-
A rather dark photograph of my latest unit. A bodyguard of lictors.
-
nice, a gang of lictor ;D and politicians :?
what's next ?
-
Nice, Mark! I'm going to need some of those, too.
-
These are from Aventine. The problem is you only get two per pack with the Republican general, but he is such a nice model, and so is the injured servant that I wasn't fussed buying two packs. Foundry do some in their Imperial Roman range. 1st Corps do them in their command packs that are a little smaller. Agema have some beautiful new ones but I looked at them at Salute and they were smaller still and very thin. Loverly models but I'm not sure they would have fitted in next to all of the Mark Sims, Copplestone and Saleh sculpts...
-
Yes I'll go for 4 Aventines, like you. I have a couple already. I want one of the wounded chaps, too. :-)
-
A better picture of the Lictors. Simon the 1st corps lictor is the second from the right, the rest are Aventine. Foundry magistrate.
-
Another group of rioters. Aventine miniatures with a Gorgon miniature for good measure.
-
Some thugs with bows. Foundry and A and A miniatures I think? Maybe they are Crusader?
-
Hello all
wow, nice ones Mark. :-* :-*
I´m finishing painting a group of thugs (the ones i converted) and then i will complete my second bodyguard group.
I still have a long way to go for i need to make two warbands for SAGA.
Excelent work. :)
Cheers
Rui
-
Really nice, Mark! Yes I think the podgy ones are Crusader.
-
excellent new additions !
you are going too faster for me and i can't follow you on paint job of my gangs :'(
-
Great stuff, Mark, well painted. I'm surprised this 1stCorps Lictor looks that good compared to Aventine. I've got them all and actually the 1stCorps guy is really small but being painted and on standing on a base it works quite good. I maybe shall consider painting mine as well.
-
Hello all
Mark, those thugs with bows have any special rule in the battleboard or they just act normally as Warriors with bows?
They are great and a unit its not bad to add on my force.
Cheers
Rui
-
Hi chaps,
Thanks for the nice messages. Nervisfr they are coming on pretty fast, but bare in mind I started quite a while ago. The most recent three shots are from the last month those. Romans in just a tunic are very quick to paint.
Prof - the 1st corp figure was left out originally for the same reason, but based up looks fine. He looks like a smaller adult but he is not wildly different from the others.
Rui - i was experimenting with different troop types in my rules. Ive allowed each mob to have up to a single unit of thugs with bows. This gives them a L missile range, but I reduce their armour down to 3 as compensation. There are no hard and fast rules! My list is unofficial! Play with what figures you want and don't be restricted by lists!
Thanks again! More rioters next and some civilians!
Mark
-
Do we have a timeline on the article? :P
Now I think I need some of those rock throwers to add in to my force/s.
-
Hello all
Mark, many thanks for the tips on Saga.
I have to try them as Warriors (thugs) or Levies (great unwashed).
Gang versus gang might be to strong but gang versus legionaires force might work better. :)
Cheers
Rui
-
The article I am writing should be done this weekend. How long before it is published? I'm not sure! It depends if Guy at WSS likes it and assuming he does when there is space in the magazine for it. I'm afraid it won't be for a few months at least!
Poiter50, the rioters are just javelin men with bits of grit from my sharp sand stuck on instead of their javelins. There are lots of others done in the mob pictures earlier in this thread using Greek and Numidian javelin men as a basis.
Cheers

Hhuuummm!!!
Nice ones. A manufacturer i always forget and it has lovely figures.
Those are great for gang members. :)

yes, they belong ot my favorite Aventine sets. The guys are roaming around on my painting desk since months and I was thinking of painting them for LPL but then an elephant came by.
-
I was thinking of painting them for LPL but then an elephant came by.
As it does on most painting tables! lol lol lol
-

the painting desk is a place where some figurines are lost for several months (even years) and you don't know why.
:o
-
A few more pictures of the latest painted figures. First up a few Plebs from Foundry.
-
Next up are the start of a new force on the streets of Rome. These will represent some of the troops used by Pompey to enforce order back on the streets of Rome. again Copplestone sculpts. I'm going to class the unarmoured legionaries as warriors and some armoured ones as bodyguards. I'll use a military tribune or a centurion as the gang leader. They are getting their own battle board I just need to try it out a bit more!
-
Lovely painting again, Mark, like the legionaries.
-
Yes very nice Mark! I believe that the Urban cohorts used Montefortino helmets, too, even after they were long obsolete elsewhere.
-
Hello all
Nice ones Mark. :-*
That battleboard will come handy.
Well done
Cheers
Rui
-
Najewitz Modellbrau buildings arrived today :o ;D
-
They are amazing! Puts me right off scratch-building that sort of thing, with the quality being so superior. If you don't mind me asking, what's the damage on those?
-
There are two buildings in the picture. They are 24 euros each... So about 20 quid. The town houses are all the same with different fronts. The temple is very nice indeed. The villa looks great but is about 50 pieces so will take a bit more time!
-
:-* :-* :-* :-*
Keep it coming mate.
Cheers
Rui
-
Not too pricey, then, Mark! What frontage are the shops, please?
BTW the Games of War roof for their pirate house is really excellent, and a snip at £4 post-free. Really well cast... two of them, end-to-end, would make a great roof for a barracks or granary. The small section would be good for a portico.
http://www.gamesofwar.net/acatalog/Pirate_Supplies_Store.html (http://www.gamesofwar.net/acatalog/Pirate_Supplies_Store.html)
-
The town buildings are 155mm long by 80mm depth. They are 95mm - 110mm in height. They come in sides that stick together easil a bit like the current trend for MDF buildings. This means they are hollow and quite light, but need a bit of filler to clean up a few very thin gaps on the sides.
-
Hello all
Yes Simon, the roofs are very nice and if you paint the houses in roman style most of them if not all will do for a roman city.
Its 2 in 1 (pirates and roman buildings). :D
Cheers
Rui
-
Thanks both. I shall have to get some of those buildings, down the line...
-
Been a bit distracted but getting in a game tonight
-
Hello Mark
Lovelly set. :-*
Does the wall is from hovels (hadrians wall) ?
More pics please.
Where you abble to finish those battleboards you where working with?
Looking forward to see them. Will they be published ?
Cheers
Rui
-
Yup hovels
-
Lovely port Mark. :-*
Keep them coming.
The buildings also look very nice after painting.
Hell, you guys are placing lovelly pictures and i´m being lazy about the project. :?
I really need to paint something. :'(
-
Looking great, Mark! I see the new temple is on the table, it is looking very fine...
-
Thanks
-
:-* :-* :-*
-
Wow! Nice terrain set up.
-
Thanks guys. I don't have any spare Romans I'm afraid Rui😞. Here is the inside if my Najewitz Modellbrau temple. I've added a cult statue made from an old plastic Atlantic Greek figure I was given.
-
Top stuff!
-
Oh I forgot to say I'm running a participation game of this at the Naval Wargames Show at the Explosion museum in Gosport. It's free. Pop by and play if you are in the local hemisphere?
Cheers
Mark
-
That's a lovely ship :)
-
That's a lovely ship :)
You read my mind.
-
Hello Mark
Thanks though.
And yes, lovelly ship but i think a certain person already published it previously in LAF if i´m not wrong!!
Cheers
Rui
-
Now that is the most encouraging pic I have seen! :o
I am so waiting for this article to be printed, Mark. ;)
Thanks
-
This is a great harbour, Mark, I like it a lot :-*
