Hi All,
I finally managed to find dense insulating foam in my area (the curse of living in a warmer zone), and have taken my first stab at a foam and cork hill:

It was a little harder to hide the grass edges than I hoped, but overall I think it came out pretty good for a first try. However, any constructive criticism on how to improve would be much appreciated.
More photos and info on my construction method can be found on the blog:

Thanks!

Nice looking hill. The various textures give it a lot of character.

It looks nice! In my opinion, it's rather perfect for 1:1200 games, as a big rocky wall! The texture for a 28mm could be a bit odd, but still absolutely acceptable!
For the grass edge, you can add some different colours of grass and turfs on the surface. Maybe all yellow-ish, but with some tone variations!

That rock face looks fabulous!

Splendid work :-* :-*
Now seeing as that one went so well, make a load more :D
cheers

This looks very good. What are the dimensions? And for what scale is it intended. As said before a bit more different color tone would do the trick even better. I use a lot of cork myself but just as it is and i find it works quite well.

Thanks Everyone for the comments and suggestions.
The hill is approximately 12" wide, 7" deep and 2 1/2" high, and intended for 28mm African games. The top is big enough to hold 8-10 figures.
I had actually sprayed the felt with some greens and earth tones to get a bit more color variety, but it's subtle and doesn't seem to show up well in photos. Comparing the hill material to the original cloth, I think using the matte sealant had further dulled the colors as well. I'll have to go back and do some touch up work it sounds like.

Lovely bit of work. Your first try, you say? :o
I'd be thrilled to have that on my table. Though how I'd explain dry, sunny-looking terrain like that in a representation of the dank, dreary climate of nothern England I can't begin to imagine lol

damn! :o that's nice. love the stone effect, how did you manage it if i may inquire?

The stone face is a strip of cork bark picked up at the local pet store. Most of the color is natural to the cork - I just did a bit of drybrushing to blend it into the painted sections.

Looks Awesome, I am jealous! If this is your first attempt, I cant wait to see more.
