Right new project! I've been asked to build a few wee things that Crooked Dice are planning to use for photography in a new supplement.
The theme is European legend, eg Robin Hood, King Arthur, Beowulf, etc. Between Karl and myself, we've come up with a few wee ideas...
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/7A907773-9433-4F75-BFDA-D78C2A92F157_zpscr6hyvow.jpg~original) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/7A907773-9433-4F75-BFDA-D78C2A92F157_zpscr6hyvow.jpg.html)

I've made a wee start on some of them. Still very WIP...
This is the start of the Great Oak. I've made a hardboard base and used wire to make a former. It was then fleshed out with masking tape, them air drying clay. I used a hairdryer to heat some GS to give a thin covering for woody texture....

Some archery targets...
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/E3EABEC6-1604-46AB-9AF4-576A7A2FE4B0_zpszltgn0co.jpg~original) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/E3EABEC6-1604-46AB-9AF4-576A7A2FE4B0_zpszltgn0co.jpg.html)
A couple of roadside signs that will have wanted posters with ugly versions of Robin Hoods face on them because 'They just can't seem to get my face right!'. Stealing an idea from Disneys Tangled!( I was made to watch it....honest!)
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/F9C781EF-FBB3-43A7-B86B-077FA02AB87C_zpslt8ruerd.jpg~original) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/F9C781EF-FBB3-43A7-B86B-077FA02AB87C_zpslt8ruerd.jpg.html)
And Friar Tucks Ale wagon. Which will have a large ale barrel with a secret compartment for storing wanted Nottingham citizens!

Any other ideas are most welcome!
-
Looking really good so far.
-
Brilliant putty pushing as usual :-*
-
:o !!!
:-*
-
Very cool start. Although if you visit the 'major oak' as it is now, you'll see that you need to make it's branches soooo long that you have to cut down all the other trees in the area in order to build supports to stop them snapping...
Why have you cut those lines into the archery butts? Not something I've seen on one before.
-
Haystacks! Lots of haystacks! Especially if working on the Kevin Costner version. ;)
Great work so far, I'd considered using 7th voyage to play out Erik the Viking ( not the cartoon one!) but thinking about it Robin hood would work perfectly.
I assume you're not looking to do Boormans Excalibur? Otherwise a tree full of dead knights would be a 'nice' addition.
-
A statue of the sheriff with a scar down his face?
A large catapult?
-
I think you've hit the nail on the head with those really, assuming you're looking at small to medium sized creations (ie. no Nottingham Castles or Heorot Mead Hall).
Water always seems to play an important part in British & Isles legends (and European), whether pools, ponds, streams and rivers, etc.. which is an essential element (literally) in the pre-Christian societies. Fords in particular crop up again and again as euphemisms for crossing points between worlds or states of existence.
You probably can't have enough ravens, piles of treasure, weapon stacks, peasant huts, stone circles etc..
-
No matter where The Project takes you, that is a SPLENDID start. I love Tuck's Wagon & the rest of the pieces as well. GREAT WORK!
-
An excellent start. Can't wait to see the finished results.
-
superb stuff! Cool ideas!
How about a lake with a hand out of the waves holding a sword, as being the lady from the lake?
-
A watery tart, distributing swords, is no basis for a system of government… lol
-
...nor is a moistened bint!
-
Splendid stuff. Watching the old Disney cartoon and the Errol Flynn and Richard Todd versions should provide you with some inspiration as well.
-
Some very neat stuff developing. I am looking forward to seeing them progress.
Some stocks?
Some fake merry men made out of straw with clothes thrown on? Always useful for fooling the sheriff's men, who let's face it are not the brightest starts in the night sky.

Lovely, lovely sculpted knicknacks. A bit of a nonsequitor but where is that sikh lord fr.o.m.?

Inspired as usual Andrew :)
Looking forward to seeing the end products.

Brilliant as usual, mate.

This is a wonderful idea:

You have to give that a go.

It was supposed to represent where the twine digs into the woven straw. As if its all tied together. I thought it would be beyond me to sculpt the thin string on top!
Haystacks! Lots of haystacks! Especially if working on the Kevin Costner version. ;)

Haystacks. Check!
I think the dead knights hanging from a tree is a wee bitty too grim. I get the sense 7th Voyage is quite cheery/jokey.
A statue of the sheriff with a scar down his face?
A large catapult?
I would need to get the right model to suit that one Ray! The catapult is a good idea!
Splendid stuff. Watching the old Disney cartoon and the Errol Flynn and Richard Todd versions should provide you with some inspiration as well.
My brother suggested making the archery targets from the Robin Hood cartoon that have a person inside so they move! ;)

Fantastic ideas Micheal! lol
@White Knight-I'm planning on making a waterfall/river piece with stepping stones across it mate, for the Little John scene. There's a wee sketch in the first pic at the top right.
Thanks for all the help and encouragement guys!
The Ale wagon is finished gents

For RH you need a tax collector's wagon and a fat bishop's coach as robbery targets.
Deer that has been hit by a poacher?
Perhaps some kind of forge might be useful (more Black Shield of Falworth).
Cave entrances and steep-sided ravines are perhaps the most common Camelot scenery in BBC's Merlin
-
Lovely stuff
The big dart boards are really nice :D
lol
Have you tried typing 'archery butts' into google?
-
What's not funny about a bunch of dead kniggets in a tree? Oh, yeah, I see... ::)
I amazed no-one has made a Rickman sheriff in miniature yet. A missed opportunity. :(
-
Looks like another AndyM thread we'll all be following avidly.
It's not a separate piece, but have you considered making spots on the tree branches that could support a figure on a base?
-
Ooh, this is shaping up to be good! It has the AndyM: Awesomeness Guarantee... :D
And the theme is right up my alley too.
Have you tried typing 'archery butts' into google?
I have, the most entertaining thing I encountered was a street sign saying "Kings Butts" and this:
And here I thought you were on to something good.... o_o
I used a hairdryer to heat some GS to give a thin covering for woody texture...
What is the reason you heat the GS with a hairdryer?
Does the (over)heating cause a certain texture to occur, or does it make the GS more pliable, so you can put thinner sheets on the tree or such?
I'd like to know, as I'm looking into building a creepy haunted forest of my own, and have some trouble solving conundrum of texturing my trees.
As far as suggestions go, have you thought of:
-A(n abandoned) chapel?
-A witches' or soothsayers' hovel?
-A narrow bridge? (for the essential "You shall not pass!" or "Airspeed of a swallow" scenes...)
-A decorated pagan sacred grove?
-
@Modhail-That wasn't the pic I found mate! The one I seen had a lot of naked guys with bow and arrows!!!
Depending on how hot/cold the GS is, depends on how easy it is to manipulate. Heating it makes it softer and more spreadable mate. For example I used a hairdryer to make the GS blend easier with the plastic card to hide the edges on this....

These bits are for the inside. It's a banner for the back wall and curtain roll to attach to the wall inside...

@Fastolfrus-I think the tree would have to be bigger for that one bud. They might be able to balance stuff inside the smaller branches.
Cheers for other ideas guys!

A hairdryer ... that's a great idea, thanks. I chew it like gum at the mo (because my greenstuff is getting elderly), then spit it out for use. Disgusting, but it does mix it together well and warms it a little. I'll remember the hairdryer thing for future reference.
-
That tent looks the nuts, Andy.
Love it!

That sounds a bit scary if someone makes you swallow it in surprise!
Gotta agree with the great tip, though, mate.
A hairdryer, eh...?

Thanks for the tip about heating GS, I'll have to remember that.

You really chew it? :? Isn't the stuff poisonous, even if you don't eat it, the saliva mixed with the GS etc etc?

Placing it between your cheeks cannot be good. For anybody.

Cracking work matey 8) 8) 8)

Oh god! Please don't do that! I'm sure kneading is probably toxic!!! That CANT be good for your health!!!
Kneadite is not toxic in any urgent sense. You may get a allergic reaction to the resin. However, as with most modern substances one doesn't know how it may affect you in the log run. A bit of normal caution, perhaps?

So there are obvious side-effects... ::)

Great ideas and execution, Andy!

I like the tent. The helmet on the stand, awaiting a challenge, is great.
A barrier with a pair of poleaxes leaned against it would be a nice touch.

Ta much gents!
That's the Ale wagon finished...

Fantastic mate :-* :-*
I have to agree with my learned friend.
Bloody gorgeous!

Can anybody suggest a good horse supplier?
Decent dr4aught horses are hard to find.
Maybe try an oxen for the cart....?
-
Oo, that's a bit good. :D

Nicely done Andym!!! :-*
-
My fave is robin of sherwood from the 80,s with herne the hunter and the wolfsheads etc.. we need a nasir!!
-
Decent dr4aught horses are hard to find.

Front Rank Miniatures sell both horses and oxen that will be suitable. (And the bonus is they can be purchased sigularly.)
-
Really great looking terrain.
Conquest games make a range of the 80s 'Robin Of Sherwood' wolfshead figures.
Robin, John, Tuck and Will at the moment but they say Nasir and the rest are on the way.
Though they have gone a bit quiet on the new figures for the past month or so.
-
Thanks gentlemen!
Just starting back on this after a wee break having to redo something else. This is just the first of the archery butts and the ugly wanted pics of Robin Hood.

COOL STUFF! It's little touches like these BEAUTIES that give the overall scene charm & personality. GREAT WORK!
Are any of the the arrows on the ground by the butt stuck in some dead birds?
-
Brill Andy, just brill :D
You do need an arrow split by another arrow though in the centre ;)
cheers

Great link Paul! Cheers for that. That whole site is very useful!
I've started work on a couple of other pieces. I've been trying to work out how to do a waterfall and I've came across some of our railway modeller colleagues techniques. To create realistic water they seem to use bathroom silicon sealer. You need something the silicon doesn't stick to. I used a bit of plastic card. You just apply it in vertical lines. Once that's done (while it's still wet) run a tooth pick down its length to rough it up. I also added some wee bits of white silicon with the toothpick, to look like frothy water.
(http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a605/andymac2105/Mobile%20Uploads/20140619_063658_zpslcmws4hu.jpg~original) (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/andymac2105/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20140619_063658_zpslcmws4hu.jpg.html)

I've also started the sword in the stone piece. The poles are going to be lit torches when I'm finished.

-
Looking good so far, mate.

Great idea for the falls.
Going to store that one away for future use.

Why is the sword in the stone stuck in an anvil?
-
Why is the sword in the stone stuck in an anvil?
Because that is the mythical 'Sword in the Anvil', not your common-as-muck, two-a-penny, 'Sword in the Stone' trick, that's why..... ;)
-
I think the Disney one is stuck in an anvil. That's what I was going with.
The waterfall is finished (I think ???). I'm not sure if I need to lay some more silicon down on the falls them self to rough it up a bit more. I might put more varnish on as well.

Looks great mate :-* :-*
Maybe the addition of a tree or two to give it a bit more height :)
cheers
James
-
Love it Andy, that's great. :D
I agree with James though, a tree or two may just do the job.
-
Absolutely splendid :-* :-* :-*
I say no trees :o Seeing it in isolation I agree that trees would add height but I think it looks idyllic glade like and the trees can be on the adjoining areas?
-
Stunning, leaves the trees. The sealer has worked better than I thought
-
Another wonderful addition.
The waterfall from silicon was a stroke of genius and something I will be trying.
On a side note concerning something which was mentioned earlier. Conquest Games have now released the latest set of 'Robin of Sherwood' figures featuring Herne and Nasir.
-
Very very nice :-*
-
A great scenic piece, fantastic work.
-
That is a LOVELY scene you've created.VERY WELL DONE!
-
Waterfall is looking great Andy - I used the silicon approach a couple of years back

Thanks gents! I think I'll leave the trees off of it. I think it'll look ok when it maybe has a background behind it.
The great oak is now built. This should be a wee quick one to paint.

That is an EXCELLENT Tree...it has a lot of spooky potential. I looking forward to seeing how you handle the foliage. GREAT WORK!
-
Cheers Deafnala!
That's the tree finished. That's supposed to be 'R + M' in the heart with an arrow(Robin and Marian)

Me too 8)

Wow Andy! That oak tree is excellent! You could make a great weirwood tree for Game of Thrones along those lines.
-
Exciting and amazing as always, Andy!
-
Very nice paint on the GW castle, what's your recipe?
-
Both The Tree & the Gate have an idyllic quality to them that I find CHARMING...the R+M in the heart is a FINE detail that adds WONDERFULLY to the overall effect. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Really nice finish on both, mate.
I love the attention to the groundwork.
That path under the gateway is most excellent, sir.
:-* :-* :-*
-
Brilliant! :-*

Lovely stuff. The great oak looks, err, great.. ;)

That'd be REALLY cool! :o :o I wish someone would!

Now you have to follow this process correctly! It's all GW colours.
Undercoat the model in Black Spray.
Base colour is Zandri Dust.
Wash with a really diluted solution of Chaos Black.
Get pissed off when the wash looks too dark and uneven.
Cry a bit.
Dry brush back to a decent standard with Zandri Dust, then Rakarth Flesh, then Screaming Skull.
After that you just pick out certain bricks with glazes of XV-88 and Chaos Black.
Tanks chaps!
-
Andy - beautiful stuff as ever!

Ill be stealing the waterfall trick too. Looks the part
-
@James-it made you chuckle because we've all been there before! ;)
@VM-all these are just getting painted up and sent off mate. I'm afraid there was never a view to cast them!
That's the Knights tent finished. I've tried to keep it all nice and light with bright colours...

Really, really nice piece to see, wonderful set up :-*
-
Cracking stuff as usual. ;D
-
That all looks bloody gorgeous, mate.
Love those vibrant colours.
:-* :-*
The only concern I have is for the Knight.....he looks a little malnourished to me.
:D
-
You beauty.
-
Lovely :)
-
Any other ideas are most welcome!
How about some legendary items from continental Europe? The Nibelungen Saga provides excellent inspiration that is in the mind of many due to the Wagnerian impression...
-
The tent & it's surrounding form an idyllic scene that has me thinking of the crowd in the stands of A Knight's Tale doing the wave. That aside, BEAUTIFULLY WELL DONE!
-
@James-it made you chuckle because we've all been there before! ;)
Too bloody right, it wouldn't be any fun if we didn't lol
Love the tent. Can we get a group shot... Pretty please :D
cheers
James
-
How about a suit of plate armour suspended on a wooden frame - should be possible with some plastic Perry WotR bits? You have got the helmet on the table :D
Oh and yes please to the group shot
-
Too bloody right, it wouldn't be any fun if we didn't lol

Thanks gentle-chaps! I'll get a group shot soon. I don't have much left to do and I'll get it ALL together!
-
Good man :D
cheers
James

Excellent stuff so far. Is this for your own pleasure or is it an Official Crooked Production?
-
Cheers Brummie! It's all official Crooked Business mate!
