Title: A Knight and his followers
Post by: Modhail on 05 May 2014, 01:40:35 PM
As part of my greater "Warhammer Quest/Generic Dungeoneering/Chanson de Geste/Generic Fantasy" snowballing Frankensteinian hybrid project over on the workbench, I've painted a brave knight and his fighting retinue.
This marks the completion this project's first, and probably largest, warband and the core of the Chanson de Geste part of the project. So I decided to take some extra time to make some better pictures than my usual workbench snapshots.
Here goes...Action!

Our brave hero bursts forth from the forests surrounding Dreadshade Crags, his retinue close behind!
They seem very eager to save La Belle Dame Mygraine. She is in quite a bit of distress, shackled to a rock like that, in nowt but her chemise, and to make it worse, it has been raining all day... Her cries of misery ring through the woods.
But why has she been mistreated so?
Well, she is to be the most recent biannual ritual sacrifice to Grand Mal, the demon-lizard of Dreadshade Crags.
He doesn't seem to be too happy about being disturbed at dinner time...
At the sight of the hated beast, Sir Lucien spurs his charger!
Soon he is unhorsed, but rises quickly resumes the fight on foot.
La Belle Mygraine remains a captivated(captive?) audience to this clash of blade versus claw. In her fear she cries out,  sharply and repeatedly.
The knight's retinue manages to surround the best, forcing it to face their master!
And still La Belle is forced to watch on as others decide her fate... (I do wish she would stop screeching and wailing though, it's giving me a headache!)
Warily, the two enemies circle each other, until, suddenly, Sir Lucien lunges forward and strikes the killing blow! The Damsel is still wailing distressingly...
The heroic deed achieved, our young Lord and his retinue pose for the Heralds and troubadours present as La Belle howls her joy at being saved in the background.

Once the preliminary sketches and verses have been made by the chroniclers, our good knight sidles over to his squire and whispers: "Quickly, fetch me the keys to those manacles! Oh, and a gag! She won't shut up and my head aches so from her incessant wailing...."

Even though the colours look nothing alike, I sense a distinct Monty Python and the Holy Grail vibe to your tale... :)

Nice choice of colours give this warband a lovely visual appeal.

Very nice. She looks like she's up for a bit more peril. :)

But Grand Mal don't like it when you play with HIS food...

Nice, if noisy...

Now off to find the cowards who chained her?

That's a lovely band of intrepid heroes.

Now how is our brave hero going to fit all of his followers into a dungeon? Just think how many of them will get lost in the dark if they can't all fit into one room.

Wow, such responses... Thank you guys, I'm glad you like them!

White knight, how'd you guess?  ;) ;D

Valerik, the responsible parties haven't been identified yet. Though on the day of her disappearance the Baron's alchemist was found dancing and frolicking in the meadows outside the baronial estate, shouting "Free! Free at last! No more headache poultices, or elixirs of deafness! Free! Free to do my own research, finally! Hahahahahaaa!"
Another odd coincidence was that a part of the court, including all of La Belle Dame's personal staff, didn't seem worried at her disappearance and didn't don mourning colours until after news of her rescue reached the castle...  ;)
Naturally the first port of investigation is to accuse and interrogate some random peasants.

Michka, if I remember correctly, most WHQ tiles have at least 12 squares and the lantern illuminates adjacent tiles as well, so I have some room to manoeuvre. Nevertheless, I don't think my knight will ever take his entire retinue into a dungeon.
I could reverse the plot though, and have the warband consist of a group of Orcs/Beastmen/brigands who are invading the knight's castle, and let the men-at-arms and knight take the place of the "monster" defenders... Thank you for that flash of inspiration!

:-* lovely heraldry, and I love the way it's continued in his retinue

Great knight and retinue, and fun photo narrative,  :)
Like the reverse dungeon idea too.

This is great! Nice paints on the retinue and knight.

I am so very jealous of your collection of vintage bretonians. They don't make 'em quite like that anymore.

I love this Bretonian's vs dinosours

What is the beasts model?

Great stuff - I've yet to start painting some stuff for my Chivalry project. Stupid jousting rules took the air a bit out of me  :(

Miniman, the dino is some "made in china" children's toy a friend gave me years ago. Could even have been Jurassic Park merchandising.

Thanks, Argonor. I can understand how those rules can drain the enthusiasm... Especially at that price and how promising they seemed to be. I find in such cases it helps to revisit the sources that got you fired up for the project in the first place.
For my own games, I haven't decided on rules at all. I'm currently considering either using Mordheim (with it's attendant flaws/restrictions) or kludging something up with IHMN (where I like the freedom from the fact you can generate your own stats, but the pluck mechanism means proper heroes potentially go down as hard and fast as anyone, which I'm not completely satisfied with...). Either way a large portion of house rules will be needed for dungeons and jousts.

I'm currently painting up a batch of 6 skeletons, and figuring out heraldry for the pair of knights I'm converting.
I've drawn up a quick colouring book style heraldry design sheet some time ago, that I'm using for this. It features four sets of a shield, caparison, helmet with mantling and 2 retainers so I can check out how colours work together and how to turn them into livery. I just take a blank one and have at it with crayons and felt tips...
If there is any interest I could scan in a spare and post it?

Problem is, it was the possibility of running tourneys as bring-your-knight-and-his-entourage, and then building up a story around my own young upstart that triggered me  lol

But I have bought a lot of minis, and as I love SAGA, and they seem to bring out rules for the Crusades, the purchases will not be in vain!

Of course - every little accessory made to facilitate the preparations for gaming are welcome!

On a notion: I think I remember that the old D&D rules had some jousting rules - I'll go find my old flat boxes (and the Rules Cyclopedia) and see if there's something useable in there!

Apart form that, I have my mind set on writing up a set of tourney rules that should be a bit more interesting to play, than just rolling 2 dice and predecide in which order to play some randomly drawn cards...  ::)

Ouch, I can see how those rules are a double letdown then...
It is a very attractive premise, nonetheless.

But I have bought a lot of minis, and as I love SAGA, and they seem to bring out rules for the Crusades, the purchases will not be in vain!
Miniatures purchases are never in vain! :D

When you have a working draft of your rules I'd really like to have a look at them, if you'd let me. At the moment the only (semi)dedicated jousting rules I have are the old "Full Tilt" ones GW published in a White Dwarf in the 90's. The basically boil down to "choose one of 5 tactics, GW's trademark sequence of rolling to hit, to wound, armour, with an added roll to unhorse. Score points, repeat." The moving, or even presence, of miniatures is actually irrelevant...

Anyhow, here is that blank heraldry sheet (http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h213/Modhail/Warhammer%20Quest/Generic%20Dungeoneering/Knight%20and%20his%20retinue/Heraldryandliverydesignsheet.jpg). It's a bit washed out by the scanning, but I hope it's still usefull.
Here's the one I daubed all over during the process of deciding heraldry for my young knight and his retinue:

Great, thanks!

I'll try remembering to sent you a draft when I have written something up.

I actually have two ways I can go: 1) a fairly simple solution, with movement and the actual hit measured by dice rolls, adjusted by skill/training cards, using a result table that gives you a better hit, the higher your total, and 2) a game where you get to aim for a specific point of impact, rolling percentage dice to hit, the result, adjusted by skills and/or training, deciding how well or bad you hit.

I think I'll start with the simple solution, though.  :)

Sounds good!
When you mentioned aiming for a specific point of impact, for a moment the old Epic and 40K hit diagrams and the "up-down, left-right" dice shot through my head...  ;D Probably over-elaborate and complicated, but it could be fun...

I'm thinking more on the lines of possible targets: Helmet, Shield, Body, and Swipe, with a minimum percentage requirement to hit the target area, some percentage intervals, or a separate roll, that can be modified by training/skill cards, to show actual effect... something like that. Speed of horse may deduct from aiming, but add to effect...

I have to go ponder and tinker with this...  o_o
