Title: Star*Hide Space Alley - Figures! Paint! Bazzzooom!
Post by: Dr. The Viking on May 06, 2014, 03:23:26 PM
I painted up a few STAR*HIDE figures from Killer B Games.

It seems I've been doing sci-fi western stuff for years. I made a comparison with some older figures here:

Bob Olley scrunts, Killer B Games, Demonworld cyborgs.

Well, there was never really no telling where my space cowboy stuff started and my retro scifi ended. So yes, sure I will game with this. I imagine Carl Blixt might end up on a backwater planet where these guys hang out. I can even see the VSF mine making an encore here. ;)

Now I just need to find a lot of the 2nd edition slaanesh steeds. They'd be right perfect for horsies in space.

Title: Star*Hide Pulp Alley League (Space Alley?)
Post by: Dr. The Viking on September 02, 2014, 06:53:31 AM
I should have been to Sweden this weekend to play games with these newly painted additions to my retro sci-fi Old west, but sadly life took an unexpected turn for the worse so I had to stay home.

I still hope to present the (4 player) game in some other context, but I don't know which yet.

As I have painted the miniatures I might as well show them here.

Here's the new stuff that was painted:

Lava bull, Wild Bill 7, Crazy Horse, Flying Rats, Ted Troopers

The scenario was set in a small mining town called Galactic Gulch. A freight plane leaving the place had been downed and pieces of valuables were strewn all over the place. The different leagues would have looked like this:

Wild Bill 7's Posse of Killer Robots
Motivation: While everyone is frantic searching for valuables rob the bank!
Leader: Wild Bill-7
Special: Once per turn may fire special roller gun mode
Sworn Enemy: Crazy Horse's Posse
Frozen Hell Ally: The Lava Tribe

The Tribe of Lava
Motivation: The intruders seem to be crazy with the things that the great iron bird dropped from the sky. Surely they must be powerful items. We must obtain these to sacrifice them to the volcano god, so we can gain a part of the power.
Leader: Magma Shaman
Special: Enemies hit in close quarter fighting risk catching fire. Can set fire to wood.
Sworn Enemy: The Space Police Cavalry
Frozen Hell Ally: Wild Bill's posse

Crazy Horse's Posse
Motivation: We must collect as much loot as possible and get as many hides as possible from the local life.
Leader: Crazy Horse
Special: Once per game CH may place traps
Sworn Enemy: The Posse of Wild Bill 7
Frozen Hell Ally: The Space Police Cavalry

The Space Police Cavalry
Motivation: We must uphold order. Arrest as many posse members as possible. And gather the lost items so they can get back to their rightful owner. So no mercy to the natives.
Leader: Police Cavalry Chief Wingnut
Special: RedBlue shirts - Whenever a non-follower Space Police Cavalry is hit you may elect to transfer the hit to a nearby Space Police Cavalry follower instead and roll Health check for that model instead.
Sworn Enemy: The Tribe of Lava
Frozen Hell Ally: The Posse of Crazy Horse

Cheers!

The rest of the leagues struggle to come in second.

A good game. My first with 4 players. I think it went OK and relatively smooth. I was gifted with at least 3 of the players having tried PA before.

Wild Bill and the killer robots won as they got the main objective. Another turn would have certainly changed this but we had carried on into the night and people had to get up and go to work so we called it quits after turn 5.

I would happily drive for two hours for a game with such a cool collection of miniatures on such a great looking pulp sci-fi table.

Fantastic stuff.

I have reduced the number of miniatures in each league for the two multiplayer games of PA that I have been involved in (a Leader, Sidekick and Ally each IIRC).  It cut down on overall game time a bit, but not as much as I was expecting.

The next time that I get together with a few guys for a multiplayer game of PA the plan is to split the forces into two sides, rather than have four opposing forces.  I really do love PA for games like this though: its perfectly suited for the sorts of over the top stories that I want my games to tell.

This would almost be their first outing.  lol

Only three!? Wow. Yeah, well I went in the opposite corner there.  lol

The game took around 4 hours with pauses and other such.

I really liked the feel of the Space Police Cavalry. The player even got to use the Red Blue Shirt rule.  :D
I didn't quite have enough of them though. I would like to make the leader a commander and just have a sea of followers.

My next game will hopefully feature a Scruntian Land Train that I started ages ago but never finished. (you can probably even find it here somewhere).

And then I had a big think. I didn't know whether to go all in with the western thing. But in the end it seems I did.

I didn't know whether to go all in with the western thing. But in the end it seems I did.

Its all the same to me, western, technogothic, cyberpunk etc: its all just different flavours of pulp sci-fi.  My orks inhabit that same imaginary gaming universe as my space cowboys, my skeleton robots, my Inquisitors, my cultists, my Judges etc.  Some projects focus on certain elements more than others, but that just means that its time for an ork/robot/dinosaur/etc in a Stetson or a peg leg or something.

I guess the only certainty in life is death.  ;)

Plenty more space cowboys to get done before then.  I have been waiting for you to finish that Scrunt land train for years :)

True that! I think my only main beef is keeping things colourful and not too grim dark. I will definitely have to add dinosaurs too! I guess they're the buffalo of my universe... Or maybe insects are? I wish I could find those huge lady bugs I bought from Bullyland once. I need another 7!

I can't actually locate my scruntian thread... Or at least if I ever did a mock up I don't see it nowheres. I thunk a bit about the train though and I think that a locomotive, a tank for liquid uranium, a coach and a cage should be enough. And a safe!

Fantastic set up as always.

Thanks. It's all a credit to you! Every building is your design.

Brilliant!

Thanks man

I've decided (today) to try and finish this project. It should be quite managable.

I have 2 more mek brothers, 1 robot and a crazy endoskeleton cowboy... and 10 plastic seahorses from China that are in the mail as I write. A few buildings And then I'm done, then I can go home

That most recent figure is great DtV!

Whats the model, where is it from?  Is it an Olley sculpt?  It looks like it might be.

Thanks guys.

Jonas has all the details as he gave it to me. But I think it is an Olley and from the Simtag range range.

Haha - no on the contrary, now you have to finish it. :-)

So for one of the scenarios the skeletal robot cowboys are trying to rustle a few robot sea horses form an unsuspecting space cowboy.

I found those on ebay and well, they're too big, but they'll have to do until I find something else or Bob Olley sculpts some proper ones. Whatever comes first.  lol

I also did some more work on the building I made:

It reads "Zorr's Guns" if you can make it out.

Ah, the Texican Rangers set from Archive Miniatures! Amongst the very first sci fi minis I ever saw waaaay back in the 1970s and created right here in Northern CA IIRC. I have that set and quite a few others. As for banditos/pisterleros in spaaace, I've a gang of Mexican Banditos from Reviresco I'm converting to sci-fi having replaced their six guns and such with all sorts of fun 28mm lazguns, beamers, plasma rifles, and even some fusion sabers...  8)

Fantastic!  :-* :-*

We were just talking about doing a campaign like this. You might want to check out the new Pulp Alley Skimmers. They work really good for "mounts" without having to come up with extra mounted figures. Just hop-on and hop-off...

There are five different types...

I painted my first miniature for real in a long time.

It is a total homage to Cheetor and his fantastic work on various sci-fi figures in his Wrecking Crew for Judge Dredd.

There's no way around it - it is blatant plagiarism, but I was actually unaware that he had this figure in his crew when I painted it. However, the inspiration is clear and came directly from his crew.  lol

I expect to stop with only around 3-4 figures in my wrecking crew. I have a star wars mega droid that will also fit nicely in.

Painting is fun again.

Ugh, yours is better than mine too, the yellow is lovely. You make me sick.

That's great news :)

Painting slumps are odd things, quite disruptive psychologically I find. The painting process helps me to function better in the rest of my life, so when it's absent it's quite a problem: I need the outlet.

I'm glad that you are back on track :)

Your project is a very entertaining. The retro space west theme is well captured and designed. It is a challenge to find figures and materials that fits a theme but there is a great sense of accomplishment once it is discovered! I want to copy a few of your ideas as well. I look forwards to your future postings.
