Title: British sailors in Darkest Africa?
Post by: imurdentist on 18 July 2008, 06:29:36 PM
Feeling the urge to paint something Darkest Africa and liking british soldiers I came over the nice Coppelstone British Sailors and their officers.
Now my question is, wether these minis are appropriate for colonial forces in the socalled Darkest Africa and against whom would they do battle? Would these guys with some officers, gun bearers and some askari make for a good start in gaming DA?
If i could use them, do you have some reference as how to paint them up?

I'm sorry if these questions are rather stupid, but bear in mind, i just started digging in the vast background of colonial wargaming  o_o

Cheers,
Thomas

The story is at http://www.morvalearth.co.uk/mstn_zommelohle02.htm

The sailors could, of course, be in Tropical Whites if you like.

Welcome to Darkest Africa.  :D

Just something for starters:
They are very usable both for eastern and western Africa. I would use them fighting Zanzibaris and Sudanese or why not on river patrol duty along one of the major rivers.

Here is a link that might be useful as well:

Zanzibaris and miscellaneous arab slavers or pirates would make ideal opponents.

Who makes those nice naval brigade figures in the straw hats?  Are those Foundry figures sculped by Marc Copplestone for the Zulu range?  I wonder if they are still made?

As far as I know, they are old Copplestone casting miniatures, now out of production. Like the zanzibaris.

Yes, the chaps in Sennet hats are discontinued Copplestone figures. I was really annoyed when he stopped selling them, as I had not got around to buying any and of course wanted them even more once I knew I couldn't have them.

I wonder why he dropped some of his packs, like these and the Zanzibari regulars?

He lost the mould for the Sennet hatted Matelots at one stage but I heard from him that he had found it again, although still not in production. In the meantime, I found some of them on Ebay & snapped them up, probably twice as many for half the price.

I wonder if that's what happened to the Zanzibari Regulars? We can but hope ;)
