Title: Another possibly silly question, sorry in advance.
Post by: 3 fingers on 30 May 2014, 01:08:46 PM
Possibly due to cheese induced dreams but I wondered has anyone done Martians with converted historical miniatures?
I have googled and came across vintage wood elves etc ,but I was thinking of ancient roman or Greeks with perhaps a colour change to their flesh.
Marvin the Martian influence??  o_o

Haven't seen any, but if it's Marvin you're doing, maybe a head made from a black bead?  ;)

Not marvin as such, but was thinking of his dress/headgear and ray gun.
I have now found scifi Spartans , but am thinking ancient Greeks with eldar style weaponry,
I suppose I am thinking Flash Gordon style really.

Not at all silly.

Look for "Tales of the Trigan Empire". Stylistically you get a mix but mainly 1960s style Roman/Greek themed.

If you are really lucky you can sometimes pick up annuals in second hand book shops. Even if it's just old issues/annuals of "Look and Learn".

Last copy I saw was in Hay on Wye in a shop that also had "The Man Who Drew Tomorrow" (a book about Frank Hampson, the artist behind Dan Dare)

plus a variety of Dan Dare reprints.

Look and Learn is worth looking at anyway - Angus McBride was a regular artist.

I wish I had found the Trigan empire when I was fair amount younger; would have enjoyed the style.

Some of the book covers of Weis' Star of the Guardians series might be good; haven't read more than a few pages, but some of the cover artists did Roman-esque as well.

As soon as my Trojan Peltasts show up from the Wargods of Olympus kickstarter I'll be converting them into Red Martian Panthans.

Here are some Romans and Greek types a gentleman has formed a Martian army from.

Is this the sort of thing you were thinking about?

Or you could look at the "Stargate" tv series.

Mainly Egyptian themed but there are a couple of Greek episides, also Norse, Babylonian, Chinese & Indian.

I think someone did a Victorian version on here a couple of years ago (Svenn?)
