Title: Pink/blue insulation board. Who sells it in the UK.
Post by: The-closet-gamer on 02 June 2014, 04:17:10 AM
Ok so this topic has arisen before and if I could be motivated to search through the posts I'd find my answer. I'm after a lot of the stuff for a terrain project and after trolling around the interweb looking on insulation websites I'm stumped. Why, well it's simple. I'm not a builder so when all the descriptions of the materials comes, some times with no images I haven't a clue what it is.

All I want is the blue or pink styrofoam that you stick in the loft or between wall cavities. I can find It quite easily on ebay but the amount I want is for collection only and I don't drive.

I was went to B&Q and asked a spotty little Herbert showing him a piece I'd swiped from work when some building work was being done. "Ok" he said " I'll just have a look in the back". 45 minutes I was waiting before someone asked if they could help. I explained the situation and was told he'd  clocked off 40 minutes ago. Now that customer service for you especially when i explained how much I wanted and it was a lot. (Though it was a bit of a relief. Thought it was like The lion, the witch and the wardrobe and he stepped into Narnia when he walked through those doors with the plastic curtains and got lost)

So who dose it and what would I be paying for it. I want to create 16'x8' table by 50mm thick plus hills and the like.

Many thanks for any help you can give. P.S. If this post is in the wrong forum, many apologies I've just signed up LAF today and this is my second post.

In Sheffield you have this place
http://www.craftfoam.co.uk/index.html

Which is a subsection of
www.panelsystems.co.uk
Which has a styrofoam section with many thicknesses and sizes.

Antenociti! Why didn't I think of that and he was a Triples the other week. Bought a load of stuff that will never get painted only to sit on the modelling bench judgementally looking at me making me feel guilty.

Craftfoam. Never heard of them but I'll have a look on the web site. Plus it's on my manor so not to faraway

Thanks guys where would I be without your help. Certainly not in Narnia. Stupid spotty little git clocking when he should be serving a customer.

What ???
Are you implying you don't store your lead/resin/plastic pile out of sight ?
 ;D ;D ;D

Wickes carry it in large sheets (4'x2'-ish, IIRC) and had it in stock at my local one a couple of weeks back.

I've bought blue foam from www.craftfoam.co.uk.  You have to buy in boxes of standard thicknesses which is a pain but it's seems to be the cheapest source in terms of £ per square metre.

If you want the pink insulation panels, then go to Wickes builders merchants who normally stock it under the name of Space Board Eco Insulation 1200mm x 500mm x 60mm  http://www.space-insulation.com/products/space-board-eco/ (http://www.space-insulation.com/products/space-board-eco/)  Stock levels vary so I'd check before making a trip.

Yes i do store said items buuuuuuut. There's no room at the inn. I think I should have called myself the hoarder. It'll  get painted honest, or i could just put a throw over it like you do with unsightly staines on a sofa. Going to need big throw.

Interesting OP. I was in B&Q last week looking for a job lot of pink or blue foam (actually for insulation lol), and apparently no-one stocks it in DIY stores any more, preferring the cheaper 'jablite' polystyrene instead (standard white flaky polystyrene with black flecks - useless for modelling, okay for insulating your loft). A few years ago, those huge 8' x 4' sheets were on sale ine very hardware store in the UK - times change I guess.

Tried Wickes' and Homebase, same reply. Looks like online sellers (and modelling shops like Antenoceti and 4D) are the best suppliers now.

Wickes do sell it still, as Dr De'ath says. Knauf 'space boards' - if you go onto Wickes website, you can search, find the item and then check which stores have stock. You can then reserve and collect. All I would say is that they were quite expensive from Wickes - like £9 a sheet, whereas it used to be half that price at B&Q. (It's still an awful lot cheaper than buying slabs of pink or blue styrofoam from modelling suppliers though).

Just checked Wickes and they're not currently carrying it. I'm fairly sure Jewsons and TP only carry Celotex and that expanded polystyrene stuff.

Pain in the backside, really, as it means there aren't any "national" bricks and mortar places to buy from in the UK at the moment.

Antenocitis is rather expensive and craftfoam you have to buy fairly large quantities.

EDIT - ooh, I take it back. http://www.jewson.co.uk/building-materials/thermal-insulation/extruded-polystyrene-insulation/

This seems to be the same stuff, only yellow. Worth popping along and checking.

I used to use the yellow stuff - it is a bit softer if I remember rightly, so not quite as good if you want a hard-wearing scenic piece. However, it's just as good for shaping, and is fine once textured and painted.

@ Captain Blood - yep, I have a bunch of Space Board (again, for its intended purpose in the loft). It is the same stuff as far as I can tell, and I've used the offcuts to make hills, but it's really thick. The traditional material that we all remember was 25mm thick, which made it great for all kinds of precise pieces. I think the soft Jablite stuff has totally replaced it now.

It's a seasonal product for some stores

I picked up 3 boards in b@q last year

Keep an eye out for building sites or houses having building work done (a skip out front is a dead giveaway). At some point there's bound to be lots of insulation board being literally thrown away because it's an off-cut. That's how I've collected all mine and the loft is jammed.

I buy mine from Screwfix, usually share the order with a friend as there is quite a lot in a pack. Good value though :D

6mm thick? What do you use that for?

I had a friendly builder ring round for me and he's found somewhere that should have 2400 x 600 x (whatever depth wanted, 50mm in my case) for a good price. I'll find out how good it is when he gets chance to pick it up. If it's the right stuff then I'll let people know where it's available from etc.

I have found it perfect for buildings, gives a nice scale thickness to the walls.

Rather use that than 5mm foam core?

Absolutely, this has the advantage of being easily textured as brick, render etc

We get the pink or blue stuff in at work sometimes as packing.Got quite a bit in the garage along with some other thicker stuff from a site i worked on years ago.Passed some onto the lads at the games club and they made hills and such.

Just been cutting a couple of pieces up this weekend to make an underground layout for 15mm miniatures.

By the sound of it pink/blue foam has had its day in the building trade for materials that have better thermal insulation properties. I've noticed that in the late 90s the stuff was cheapish but with UK government guide lines for new home for more Eco friendly houses and the carbon footprint reduction and the like it more than doubled in price. So it's still being produced and used for art and crafts which is a small income compared  to the building industry so will manufactures increase the price  to cover the loss of earnings or drop it as it's being used in different areas?
