Title: Army Painters 2014
Post by: Dr Mathias on June 13, 2014, 01:10:56 AM
Any interest in doing another 'Army Painter' challenge this year?

I'm going to, even if no one else does. I was pretty happy with the impetus to produce (and the outcome) last year.

Here's the old thread:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=55393.0

I'd propose it stays the same- in that it isn't a competition, no records are kept, we paint a unit of roughly 10-30 figures each month, and post them on or around the first day for sixth months, August 2014 to January 2015. Each person maintains their own thread and labels it starting with '(Army Painters)'.

I'm going for Darkest Africa Belgians, Darkest Africa Azande, DA Pygmies, DA Ngoni, or my Hinterland hussarettes backlog. Any suggestions will be appreciated :)

Who's with me???

At the moment my health prevents me from cranking out anything with any degree of consistency other wise I would love to join in. Will happily be following along with the threads of others though.

Yep, I'm in. Vikings for SAGA. An August start will give me plenty of time to finish my last commission, and get focused on my own toys.

My inspiration, which I have shamelessly worshipped for years:
http://www.twfigurines.de/vikings/vikingmain.htm

And no, I didn't finish last time, and I'm ok with that! ;)

I am in. Although I do not have an army I need to paint, but I have a horde of zombies and various other random bits and my painting has stalled these past few weeks. So this might give me the kick I need to get back paintin'

Low pressure, folks :)

I think if a person wanted their 'army' to be a single 54mm gladiator per month, or a few survivors, that would be just fine. The fewer 'rules' the better!!!

I'm targeting August 1 for my first entry.

Maybe people could set their goal at the start and try to stick with it.

For example I will probably aim to paint 5-10 guys a month as that's a bit of a push but a realistic goal for the amount of time I actually feel well enough to paint and how slowly I paint.

Someone else might want to paint 10-30 Greek hopilites a month another going for a small skirmish game like infinity may sent themselves a goal of 1-2 models a month as a playable infinity force is only 6-12 ish models.

We'll see.

I haven't painted anything in over a year now.  :?

I'm pretty hyped about (hopefully) receiving my All is Quiet on the Martian Front KS stuff and I have received a butt load of Blue Moon 15mm Colonials, of which I actually have the first unit (24 minis) primed.

So if I can get my brush in gear, I will attempt to do a 15mm British VSF/Colonial army.

Already a change in plans!  ::)
My last commission just turned into my second-to-last, so I have a new project, 68 Arthurians for a fellow who is paying me actual $$, so no failure will be tolerated! The fellow is a very patient gentleman, but this will be a nice way to keep me on track, and produce real results in a timely manner.
August 1st I'll have pics up and start going.

Perhaps needless to say but I've not started working on the stuff for the August 1 deadline yet :)

Would someone mind writing a short list of the exact rules of the challenge?

For example explaining where to post how to title your post the starting dates etc, just so we have an exact criteria to work towards and people who have never done soemthing like this knows exactly what they are doing.

Thanks
Title: Re: Army Painters 2014
Post by: Thargor on July 09, 2014, 08:43:50 PM
Well, although I'm only a participant I think the rules go something like this.

You should post in: Workbench

Title for your thread should be:  Army Painter:whatever you want to call it

In your first post you should state your aim (eg.  I am going to paint a WWII British Rifle Platoon.  My goals are: July - 1st Section, August - HQ, September - 2nd Section, etc)

After that it's up to you how often you post, whether you want to show WIP shots, monthly updates, or just the whole thing finished.  I use it as a bit of extra motivation to get stuff painted (last time I painted an entire army for FoW that had sat in a cupboard for years).  Have fun with it.

Nice one former user
merci  ;)

the clue is that everyone sets his own rules. The only convention is that we call in every month and present a unit. some of us presented the bare figures they were going to paint first, but that is by no means necessary. The challenge goes against ourselves, everyone challenges himself to have one unit finished per month or so, to go on and don't stop and keep it rolling.

this is basically it.

oh, and since Matt called it first, he proposed we present the first one August the first, but noone stops You from starting later.

Irritated because You are used to being told what you can and can't do and this being discussed in double digits long threads? well, welcome to the green pastures of anarchy  lol

I think I need to join this as not painted anything for a while.
With the imminent arrival of The Glorantha Guide, this would be a good way to resurrect my Glorantha project started in the 2012 LPL. I also have an idea for a game for BLAM 2015 using this background.
Do not know if I  will complete a whole unit before 1st August but will certainly be able to show what I already have, paint a few characters and lay out my plans.
First up will be Wolf Pirates led by Harrek the Beserk  with their ship.

I wonder if the expectation to produce results might help with the motivation... Hmmm... I might be overestimating my current speed, but I'll think about what I could have as my project.

So there is no minimum force size right? It could even be a skirmish army?

I'm thinking of doing a force for Dux Britanniarum or just seeing if I can get 30 Pathans finished in one month..... and that's along with painting for my customers too! (they will not be published).

As they say, no rules but a bit of peer pressure won't hurt  :).

See Ill be painting and modelling up my chaos warband (not for gaming just for fluff and because I like the models I shall be using) and I will hopefully master the armour style painting before I start on the general figure, which will be the last miniature I paint for army  :)

I think that this could bring some interesting armies to the forefront of discussion which I am looking forward too...

I shall have a look into the rules online, a quick youtube tutorial should surfice and if i like the sound of it i may have to purchase a rulebook of theirs.
The main problem is having folks to game with, may have to join a few local gaming clubs in the area  :)
