I plan to play some skirmish games in the antiques.
First batch of minis are brutal germans intended to fight my romans.
Heavily inspired by these great miniatures:

Not sure about the basing so far.
If I find the time I ll try to expand them for horde skirmish with mulybasing, or just single bases for SAGA or the like...
Cheers,
Don
-
An angry look created by a good choice in the use of dark colours. The basing could be to match the ground around them (sandy earth with a little green flock, etc), or a simplified version of your Japanese/US marines.

Don Voss
Thanks for the kudos. Those figures were in a skirmish level spin-off of Teutoburg. Germans combing the forest, mopping up Roman stragglers.

Wow, beautiful! That fur mat and the fantastic paint jobs make it look so epic; like fields of wheat, whipped by savage winds. Looks like a helicopter shot from some epic historical action film. Poor old Romans. Arminius must be pleased.
-
Very nice table and figures! I really like the long "grass" texture. :)
-
Beautiful table and minis...top shelf material there. Well done.
-
Lovely - both of you.
Grungy Ancient Germans by Mark Copplestone. It doesn't get much better than that :)
-
wow... :-*
lovelly germans and romans.
More pics please.
-
Germans by DonVoss, that's great news :-*
-
Thanx for the encouragement...;)
@mikeygees
Great table and Game and miniatures... :o
Here is the next bunch of germans.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Antike%20skirmish/AS6_zps404748d0.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Antike%20skirmish/AS6_zps404748d0.jpg.html)
This time warlord minis.
I am not too happy with the miniatures: very similar poses (especially with the bowmen), open hands for the weapons.
Think they will go in the second row behind the foundrys...;)
Still need more of them for a propper multibasing.
Cheers,
Don
-
Great work
Love the table set up as well
-

I would mix them with Foundry, I think that would be your best option. Also it's really possible to achieve more variety slightly bending the arms, torsos and legs. Also replacing heads, especially Foundry vs. Warlord.
-
Very nice work.
-
How is the water done on that fur map?
-
Shave the fur, paint it with 'blue' craft paint....
-
Okay, I decided now with the basing: I will go for 3 miniatures on a 4x4cm base. 3 bases making a unit.
I will game unit-skirmish with them, starting with 6 units. 4 are ready, two need still basing, and there will be a seperate warlord on a singel base.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Antike%20skirmish/AS7_zps0e5bfa92.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Antike%20skirmish/AS7_zps0e5bfa92.jpg.html)

I know it is not singel miniatures skirmish any more, but I like painting these germans... :)
Cheers,
Don
-
I am loving this. Please put picture up of the Romans when they are ready.
-
wow... :-* :-*
well chosen, those bases.
Lovelly miniatures
-
Excellent work so far :-* :-*
Looking forward to the Romans 8)
cheers
James
-
They look great. Lovely figures and painting :)
-
Those look great....
-
Those are terrific! I love the Teutoburg setup, too.
-
Thanx, very much for the comments... ;)
Finished two more units.
Now with 6 units I can start playing...only the warlord is still missing and perhaps a unit of skirmishers and some kav... :D

A friend of mine has mustered some romans, so I wont do mine immediately.
Cheers,
Don

A madding hoard indeed :D
Shame about your Romans though :(

wow, what a nice shot, well done!
-
Lovely work :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanx, for your commenst... :)
This whole thread is not ment to be all about Germans as you might think...;)
I will add here rather frequently more skirmish-gangs for other theaters and times.
Today I paited up my first warband for the bronze ages. Foundry again.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Antike%20skirmish/AS11_zps531cd3f7.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Antike%20skirmish/AS11_zps531cd3f7.jpg.html)
I will paint up 3 gangs for a multiplayer (each around 7-9 models), and I need a littel bit of Bronze Age scenery too. Haven't decided on a rules system yet. Perhaps I will go with the Songs of.. engine or the Legends... system.
I have to few miniatures for a SAGA variant, wich is a shame, but as you will all know, the bronze age range is pretty small.
But I will stick with individual bases this time...
Cheers,
Don
-
Hello Don
Very nice indeed. :-*
Keep them coming.
Cheers
Rui
-
Thanx, Rui.
Before painting more Miniatures I builded a small bronze age dwelling today.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Antike%20skirmish/AS12_zps27e44a60.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Antike%20skirmish/AS12_zps27e44a60.jpg.html)
Its not to big, so that my rather small warbands can fight for it.
The roof section of the building is an africa hut from hovels... ;)
Cheers,
Don
-
Great stuff :-* :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Lovely village :-*
-
Fantastic scenery and paint jobs on the figures!!! :-* :-*
On the subject of ancient skirmishes. Anybody know when 'Song of Spear and Shield ' is due for release?
-
Thanx, for your commenst... :)

Fantastic Don! I always wanted to do something with the Foundry Bronze age figures, but as you already said the range is somewhat limited. But possibly there are other ranges that coud be mixed in?
Perhaps some selected figures from the Cutting Edge range?
Or even some from the Trojan Foundry series?
I think that quite a few from the Foundry Pict range would do.
-
Thanx, gents.
@willieb
Yes, I think one could include a few minis from the picts. I ll have to think about that. On the other hand the picts are on the wishlist so I will probably paint them anyway... :D
Okay, here are e few more bronze age guys.
The next warband.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Antike%20skirmish/AS13_zps3668f226.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Antike%20skirmish/AS13_zps3668f226.jpg.html)
I even tried a few eyes an teeths this time.
Cheers,
Don
-
I love the work you've done on these :-* :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
They are really GREAT! Love what you're doing with these :)
-
That's so inspirational!
-
Bravo sir, most inspiring work. Makes me want to collect Germans now!
-
Thinking about it, wasn't that chap in the gateway the first one Michael sculpted after his injury ???
cheers
James
-
Nothing special today, just a few more germans, this time cav.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/Antike%20skirmish/AS14_zps1d03f574.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/Antike%20skirmish/AS14_zps1d03f574.jpg.html)
Foundry again and I really likes those... :-*
Cheers,
Don
-
Very inspiring stuff- can you recommend any good books on Bronze age warfare in Europe?
-
Okay, a little thread necromancy here....;)
I painted up a few foundry minis of sea peoples. Just enough for a game of "song of blades an heroes" or "open combat".
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/as1_zps3qaf5rvw.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/as1_zps3qaf5rvw.jpg.html)
I really like the strange hats...;)
Cheers,
Don
-
Amazing! :-*
Thanks for revive such a wonderful project. :D
-
I told you so. Your painting is an inspiration. :-* :-*
Very good.
-
Great work
-
Great painting. The blue has been well executed.
-
Thanx for your nice comments...;)
I managed to paint a few assyrians over the last nights.
Again just a small skirmish force...
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/as2_zpszcilvxle.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/as2_zpszcilvxle.jpg.html)
I really like the big shields... :o
Cheers,
Don
-
Becoming a Fan of your stuff with every new picture.
A small ideal for a ruleset is “open combat“. Maximum office 10 figures in the basics.
-
After a bit of pulp stuff and other distractions I was paniting some victrix romans over the last few days.
Really coolminiatures... :-*
Intended for small skirmish games with 30-40 minis...
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/rpr1_zpsascjivad.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/rpr1_zpsascjivad.jpg.html')
As with the shields I totally ran mad, as i am told you cant say how they actually looked like... ;D
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/rpr2_zpsuc4mkeju.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/rpr2_zpsuc4mkeju.jpg.html')
So some triari (long spears) and some hastati und principes.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/rpr3_zps1dcwx2d2.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/rpr3_zps1dcwx2d2.jpg.html')
Next I need some carthagians and celts ... ;)
Cheers,
Don
-
They look great! :o
Have you seen the new Spanish fingers victrix has put out?
-
Very very nice, DonVoss, your ability to paint loads of stuff that quick and nicely, astonishes me again and again!
-
simply stunning work!
-
Love those.
Gritty and grim. The shields are great :-*
-
Lovely paintjobs and really nice minis. Thanks for sharing
-
They look great.
-
Wonderful painting !
Those shields are really amazing ! :-*
-
Great figures and wonderful painting.
-
Lovely painting, this sort of thread inspires. I would love to do a large skirmish Ancients type game I have some Romans and Celts based individually and I'm thinking of using the Lion Rampant rules. I know their for Medievals but with a little tweaking.......
-
Hello,
Nice painting on models and shields !!!
Nikko
-
Nick work on all Don! 8)
Christopher
-
Yep, like these, the shields add a little something for me, great painting.
-
Thank you all gents, for your encouraging comments....;)
Last friday I got my cathage-minis from victrix and spray a little paint over the first few on the weekend.
The box is really cool.Perhaps the hoplites are alittle static, but over all brillint minis with crips detail... :-*
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/c1_zpsptonuufj.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/c1_zpsptonuufj.jpg.html')
Close up of the vets.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/c2_zpseuzf8ca7.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/c2_zpseuzf8ca7.jpg.html')
The hopliets.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/c5_zpsdfbbse0h.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/c5_zpsdfbbse0h.jpg.html')
And the general. Mainly, basic colour, Wash and 1 or 2 highlights....
Not for the cabinatt but for gaming...;)
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/c3_zps62iboss0.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/c3_zps62iboss0.jpg.html')
...and a rare viewof the hoplites...;)
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/c4_zps3ivyguzn.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/c4_zps3ivyguzn.jpg.html')
So I got now 12 points for lion rampant, a long way to go...
But some small skirmishes should be possible.
Cheers,
Don
-
What the funk....Those shields are outstanding :o :o :o
I am Green with Envy now.
Cheers

Wow, sir, that's some seriously good brushwork. :-*
Those freehands are marvellous eye-catchers. Asking as a mere adept of this art: Do you have any advice on brush sizes and choice/range of colours? Do you use outline the designs beforehand or do you paint them straight onto the shields?
Also, you're right, these Victrix chaps look very decent. For plastics. ;)
-
Wow! These are beautifully painted. I have this set of Carthaginians and I really like them. I also have the Romans in pectoral armour. I have a very keen interest in the Punic Wars but sometimes it takes a thread like this to get the inspiration flowing again!
-
Very nice! I really need to paint up mine now. You also need to post up how the units represent in your Lion Rampart line up.
Also can we get some close ups of the javelin men?
-
Really nicely painted thanks for sharing
-
Awesoe shields, Don Voss, I'm totally in awe :-* And all that dirty look of the guys works very nicely!
-
They are static, but they also look brilliant. The shields are fabulous :-*
-
Inspiring work - gives me some good ideas (when I get around to painting my Victrix chaps).
-
Thanx for the comments...;)
Here for the comissar a close up of the javeline men. I wasn't too happy with them, so I try to hide them in the background. Did a bit of painting last night...sohere they are.
Bit of fantasy with the white paint...;)
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/c6_zpskwsitvli.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/c6_zpskwsitvli.jpg.html)
@Shield design
I started in most cases with a silhouette, then washed it and added a few details. With some I got taken away and added too much details and depth, so they looked are more then an illustration the a sign...:D
Cheers,
Don
-
Looks great to me, and what's to say that they didn't wear paint like that. Excavations of graves and other period art shows that it was popular for Carthaginians to wear red paint in intricate patterns all over their bodies. Hell the Iberians where known to put a black paint on there arms for added protection against cuts and infections. :D

(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/as2_zpszcilvxle.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/as2_zpszcilvxle.jpg.html)
Nice stuff all round Don, I am particularly interested in that bronze idol - who makes that?
-
@skippp
Got it from miniaturicum...

@commissar
Thats great news...;)
Thanx,
Don

Dunno how I missed this thread before but so happy to have found it now! Awesome paint job on all of the minis, I can only wish I could reach such "table-top stantard" some day ::)
-
Really excellent paintwork, especially the shields :-* :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Nice.
-
You did a brilliant paintjob on those carthaginians. :-* :-*
Keep them coming.
-
Love the work Don!
-
I agree Don.. I think you did a poor job with the Javelinmen, let me send you my address by PM and you can ship them to me.. I'll be nice and pay the shipping..
Those are fantastic minis ... please when you play a game post some pictures.. The Carthaginians look like they will come out of the screen.. you should paint some celtiberians.. I'm scared to see what you can come up with some of their shields...
Sincere congratulations...
cheers
Francisco

Needed a little break from the medival painting and get hold of some Samnites the other day.
I quickly painted them up for small ancient T&T. So just 3-4 groups with 2-4 miniatures each.
I really enjoyed to paint these up....;)
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/as3_zpstirogwtv.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/as3_zpstirogwtv.jpg.html)
Cheers,
Don
-
Lovely painting DV as usual. Ancient skirmish games appeal to me as well, though I'll probably go down the Lion Rampant route.
-
Thanx, Jeff....;)
Managed to paint a small tempel today.
A bit on the fantasy side of things, but I like it being so chunky....:)
Made it of a sand form for the beach.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/as4_zpsdwityvlh.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/as4_zpsdwityvlh.jpg.html)
Inside....;)

And with a little paint on it.

I maybe should add a base to it,like with my indian temple...;)

Cheers,
Don
-
Nice minis, once again.
And I like the temple : simple but very effective !
-
Wow, these freehand shields are absolutely fantastic, both the designs and the execution!
