The old salt will be the Capt and his adopted daughter will be the hawaiian girl.

So time to give the old girl a prime.

Then apply the base coat, in this case it's hull red.

Once dry, wet the surface with water and apply salt.

Allow to dry and seal with hair spray. This protects the base coat.

Apply the top coat and allow to dry.

A close look at the surface. The amount of salt is personal preference.

Rub the salt off with a toothbrush or your finger or whatever.

Add some rust color and touch up to the effect you want.

Lots of wear on this one just like the Captain that steers her.

Brilliant!

I thought you were supposed to spray with hairspray and throw the salt on while the hairspary's wet? Not that your method hasn't worked as well, so I guess there's multiple ways to do it!
Looks great so far!
-
Sheer magic, Prof! That looks stupendous! :-* :-*
-
It is great to see one of these painted up. I keep meaning to model one of the rear-wheel paddle steamers that Dave has promised me.

That is nice.

It looks realistic! Great result! :-*

What a neat idea.
-
Nice look, will enjoy seeing the progress on this.
-
Great rust technique! Will follow this with interest. :)
-
Painted the port side of the hull using same method as the starboard side.
Painted and weathered decking.
Was going to wait for these to be delivered (Pic 4) but decided to go ahead anyway and see how it turned out. ;)
-
Looking good, keep the photos coming. I'm following this one with great interest.
-
Brilliant! I had not seen that method before...watch this closely, I will.

Prof
That really is looking great....

More done today.
A hint of white paint that once covered the now bare planks.
Working towards a rustic look for the rear grill.
Onward, ever onward. ;)

Onward ever onward.
-
That is coming along nicely, it perfectly sports the look that I seek on my models too!
-
I have never seen that salt method used before...impressive results.
-
Prof. that is looking really good, how did you do the weathering on the door? It looks real! :-*

Snap, I just search on the web for pics with the heading 'Worn weathered doors' or 'Weathered Wood' etc then I copy the effects. It's like painting a picture, add a little paint here, darken it, lighten to show sun fading and scratches with steel wool and various other techniques. ;)

Great suggestion! I use Google Images when I paint animals...I hadn't thought about it for structures. This ship is looking fantastic...can't wait to see it completed and part of a game!

Thats a different (and better, IMHO) spin on the salt rust technique. Thanks for sharing!
-
Oooh I like the look of that door!
-
Looking good Prof!
It may just be my monitor, but the deck looks like the same color range as the rusty hull.
-
Thanks Prof.I hadn't thought of that. A good idea and some very useful photos there. Looking forward to seeing more of this.
-
Lovely work, Prof. THANKS for sharing the ref pics. :-*

The funnel is now painted.
The story so far.
Before she became a tramp she was a steamer belonging to the 'The White Star' line with a regular run. The old salt was her Capt from day one for both. The company retired both on the same day and instead of paying the old salt all the money they owed him, they offered the steamer instead. How could he refuse? So he continued sailing her for people who ever they were and to places where ever they wanted to go. "Ship ahoy or bust" became the standard answer to all the questions that asked, "What direction are you heading to now?"
The native girl was a gift from an Hawaiian tribal Chief to the old salt for saving his life. She was his oldest daughter. (Long story for another time in a AAR) The old salt adopted her as his own. Preferring the bottle, a good fight or a gambling den to any other distractions.
The chimp is now a pet after the old salt won it in a card\drinking game. ;)

Things are starting to come together.
