Title: Warzone Grizzly and Hussar!
Post by: Agis on 22 June 2014, 11:28:26 AM
The Grizzly from last years Kickstarter finally arrived! It is a very fine kit, you get some big fat resin blocks to assemble. Everything fits more or less smoothly together, some minor fitting problems can be easily covered.

I am happy! So on to some pics:

The full story, a scale comp shot with a GW Leman Russ, my fun and difficulties and why the two rear turrets are missing can be found here:

Scales up pretty well to a Leman Russ, The 13 year old in me loves this thing. So mean guns in places they should be! lol

Neato mosquito, but those guns at the very back of the tracks are going to get fouled the first time there's a good rain.

Yes, as said on my site, it is a strange, brutal and Dark Fantasy inspired design...

I almost like that (design I mean, the painting is top notch  :) ).

I could see myself getting one to have a play around with it (and make it more Ghibli-esc).

cheers

Lovely work, Agis. I daresay I like the Armorcast one better, for smoothness of lines and proportion, but your paintjob really pulls it together.

Looks a bit to be on the small side, though, doesn't it (going from memory of the RPG sourcebook stats, although those could be seriously strange at times)?

I'm with Chris, model-wise: the Armorcast version just looked so much better. But your paintjob screams Bauhaus Corporation and eradicating Dark Citadels from the surface of Venus!

I think it needs more guns. Also, the two small jerry cans on the turret are neat... They probably provide about 1 mile more range for the vehicle! :D

Nice model  8)

Id be interested in hearing my technical details about this thing, half the design makes me go  o_o  ???

Paint wise its top notch as always.

Very nice. In many ways an awful design but I somehow like it! I think I would have to remove the rear axle guns though.... The paintjob is great - I would be interested to know how you achieved it actually.

Put me in the "great paint, poor model" camp.  Nicely done...but...yikes.  lol

The original design was based on a manga model kit crewed by pigs, with the cost of everything rising this new model is the smaller smart car version of the original design.
AH, bad guy one, right? Pitty, it doesn't carry all the charm of the original I fear.

Cool stuff, Agis!
I've shared your website on our Facebook page, nice, honest review with some great tips.

I'll probably do what you did with the turret on mine.

I actually have one of the Armorcast, I simply cannot believe people think that one is better, but fair enough! This one is smaller as the old one simply wouldn't work in the game; nor in terms of manufacture! The Armorcast one is full of airbubbles, poor detail and all was made in a really cheap material...

Agis, your rear turrets should be on their way now! Dare I say, I like it without them though! :)

For haters of the rear guns, all the guns are seperate parts, you could easily leave them off and fill the whole with putty. :D

Can you post a link, I did not found it!  ::)

I am looking forward to the turrets! Maybe I scratchbuild a telescopic extension for one.
We'll see...

In an effort to maintain the good name of Armorcast, and all of the great kits they put out in their time, I'd like to note that the Warzone resin vehicles were produced by Forgeworld, the short-lived competitor to Armorcast who had the Warzone license and produced some 40K kits.  Armorcast did some work on Warzone when Excelsior held the license, but unfortunately none of the vehicles made it into production.  So the Forgeworld kits were all that we had, and unfortunately for those of us playing Warzone, the Forgeworld models were generally a supremely inferior product.

That being said, I understand where the preference to the older model comes from.  I don't think anyone is claiming that the original behemoth is a better model from a technical perspective, Rob, with the Prodos kit having far greater detail and significantly better casting.  But the original made the mass of guns and improbable design far more palatable, because the entire premise of a massive land battleship itself was a bit ridiculous.  By dramatically scaling the model down, so that it occupies the same MBT role that most gamers are familiar with, you end up with dimensions and weapon placement that just don't feel right.

As the original concept didn't work for Prodos' version of the rules, or production budget, was there ever a thought of instead bringing one of the other Mutant Chronicles tanks to light, instead of shrinking the Grizzly?  Bauhaus definitely wasn't lacking in other vehicle concepts.

Here you go Agis!

Sorry, Akanous, you are correct that Forge World did make the Grizzly and other similar vehicle kits. I have some of the Armorcast scenery bits and pieces and those are quite nice.

I get what you mean, larger vehicle with the same amount of guns, somehow makes more sense. That's fine, it's all down to personal taste.

We chose the Grizzly as it is such an iconic piece. We could have done another Bauhaus vehicle, but the most hotly demanded model was a redesigned Grizzly. Funnily enough, a lot of fans have got in touch saying they like the new size. As I said, you can leave the turrets and some of the guns off! :)

Agis, I would love to see a periscope. I hope that comes to fruition! :)

Holly gods of wargaming I've got a tear in my eye or is it just hay fever. Any way that is one nice bit of kit you've got there. I can understand some of the comments like the rear gun/cannon and yes it is a bit small when compared to a Leman Russ. The original worked out something like GW Forge Worlds Malcador/Macharius. I kind of agree with the hatch being a bit small but take the early production Panzer 3 that had side hatches between the road wheels and the return rollers. Tiny little things and that was a real vehicle. I suppose it's all personal taste really. Beautiful bit of modelling.

I remember the article for the original Grizzly in Target Games White Dwarf style magazine Chronicles that had been built and painted by a French modeller and oh mamma it was a big un. I can safely say that article was an inspiration that made me take a turning point to take modelling more seriously. They also made a point that it was a big ( expensive ) kit and it gained enough interest they would put it into production. However Target Games folded shortly after and I'm still kicking myself for not grabbing one when I had the chance.

If any ones interested the original Grizzly was based on the Miyazaki designed Akuyaku 1-go (Bad Guy #1). I'm not sure if it was a manga comic or an anime but Tasca released a 1/72  scale kit called The three little pigs cause you got three little pigs for the crew that was 23.5 cm long in the early noughties that did the rounds at the model shows. I actually thought it was a Grizzly from a distance and to say its in the 20mm scale it was about equal size to the Grizzly

Any who love it or hate it, it's epic and it's nice to see its rightful return the gaming table. I think the wargaming Santa will be dropping a few down my chimney this Xmas. Screw it why wait for Xmas.

As other have said, it's waaay to small.   That said, it's a neat tank and your paintwork is really great.

I've been in love with this design ever since I missed my chance to own the original warzone model when it was on sale at my FLGS in the mid 90's.  A year or so I purchased the reissue of the "Bad Guy #1" kit of which the warzone original design  was a nearly direct copy.
http://www.hlj.com/product/tactg-1/Sci
It's a 1/72 model so it will need some modifications (bigger hatches, guns, etc) if it is going to be the my Squat Megatank, but it's still much bigger than the current Warzone model.

And the first Bauhaus Infantry mini, a Hussar.
I reshaped the legs (IMO the stand was too wide) under hot water, works like a charm! After that the mini was mounted on a 25 mm MDF base.

And together with a Mishima Hatamoto:

Fantastic paintjob! But I have to say I prefer the 90s metal figures. In fact this has inspired to buy some Capitol troops from Prince August!

Great work though, look forward to seeing more.

Have to agree, there are some old school WZ minis that I also like more, but overall - IMO - the new Prodos minis are a real boost...

I found most of the old range to look great as concept but awful as minis, love these new ones.

Not to drag this too far off topic, but does Prodos have a US distributor or do you have to order from them direct?

And I just wanted to pop in and say, while I agree with all that has been said, good and bad, and I mean all, the fluff had one inspired point.

It had it's own dedicated cook! What treadhead hasn't dreamed of that! ;)

'I say, commander, could we avoid the swerves for two minutes? The souffles are ALMOST done!'  lol

It's a neat bit of fluff, but is more "inspired-by" than "inspired", since a cook in the crew was part of the original Akuyaku 1 go crew and is one of the figures that comes with the kit.  Here's a picture of the finished kit with the chef near the far left.

We do direct sales to the USA, our US sales man, Jim Vidlak is working on US accounts. If you are a store and would like to stock it, please contact jim.vidlak@prodos.co.uk

That Hussar looks great, Agis. :)
