Title: Painting for Dead Man's Hand
Post by: Twin Cities Gamer on 01 July 2014, 11:05:56 PM
I gave Dead Man's Hand a try this spring and fell head over heels.  Unpredictable, fast moving, and fun...it also goes very well with beer! What more can you ask? Anyway, I've got a stack of Great Escape Games products on the painting table as you can see below.

Out of the chute first is the wagon.  I primed it black and hit it with a light overspray of gray to get a weathered wood look. I added some drybrushing and mudsplatter, and called it done. I could dirty it up even more, now that I look at it.

A wagon is bit boring but that means the fun bits are still to come.  Now back to finishing the Pinkerton agents, and three more gangs!

Very nicely done!!! They crank out loads of stuff for the old west now (scenery, terrain, cupboards, luggage, gun cabinets...) so it's lots of fun. The only thing I have on the wish list for now is that they would do some separate wagon drivers... pack of four or five different would be awesome!!!

Thank you. Suggestions: driver with bullwhip, farmer in straw hat/ dungarees, maybe a family (pa, ma, two children), a man in suit, woman in dress. A shotgun messenger maybe, but not necessary.

You fellows are too kind!

Off the table today are the Pinkerton agents. I had a problem with my triad colors here.  The final highlight is a bit too close to the midtone, resulting in a subtle jump. I must  get better at mixing my color jumps or cry "uncle" and buy a set of triad paints.  I went for a darker look with the dusters to hint at the moral ambiguity that might come from lawmen serving the person who pays the most. Lastly, I posted up a bit of background on the Pinkertons here on my blog. (http://twincitiesfieldofglory.blogspot.com/2014/07/pinkerton-agents.html)

The next faction off the painting table is the US 7th Cavalry.  I found some interesting historical background on Custer's Last Stand and how archaeology does not support the myth of the Last Stand.  If you're interested, you can find it up on my blog here.   (http://twincitiesfieldofglory.blogspot.com/2014/07/7th-cavarly.html)

Painting was a bit easier, with 6 of the 7 fellows in uniform. I did find a nice combo for painting buckskin.  The highlight color is Vallejo 912 Tan Yellow and I'll be using that again in my Old West painting.

Yep, love the painting style.  Very vibrant without being too garish.  Nicely done!

Thanks fellows for your comments.  I just finished the Renegade faction for Dead Man's Hand and they are my favorite from the Legend expansion.  Great figures inspire good painting and I hope that was the case here.  I'm pretty certain the sculptor was inspired by the Apaches for this set.

Some serious progress is being made here.
And I like it, especially those Renegades, they look great.

I think I have a baby picture of the first apache with buff duster and green headband...

Aw, he's all grown up into an apache warrior. Kids grow so fast these days.

Lovely paint work on these, I can see what you mean about the details of the sculpting.

Cheers

Thanks fellows for all the kind words!  And Constable, that was a big LOL as I did not see that coming.

I got in another game of DMH with 2 of the new gangs. There were insults traded, heroic stands, dastardly deeds and much laughing.  DMH has shot to the top of my play list because its fast, fun and has a lot of color.  It is a lovely table when you get it all set up!

The finish line is in sight!  Here's the 4th and final new gang for The Legend of Dead Man's Hand, the Banditos.  They were a fun bunch to paint and they should be a fun bunch to play as well.

Dead Man's Hand-the painting just won't die.

I really like this 4Ground stagecoach.  Is there anything their lasers can't model?

Passengers.  You can't see them very well in the stagecoach so I suppose I should have painted them faster.

Characters for 4Grounds Gallows.

Lastly, this is what you get when you lose at Dead Man's Hand.
