A small start, I am planning on building it up 8 figures at a time. Eight is a nice number to paint, not too few and not too many. It also just happens to be the number required for a single Saga point or a company for War of the Ring.
-
Sweet paintjobs! Browns and greens have a special place in my heart.
I especially like the weathering you did on the shield emblems!

They look great 8) 8)
cheers

Hats off to you Nord. Great job on those, especially the shields. I've tried to paint those and they are infuriatingly difficult. >:(
-
I like those.
You've made them dark and menacing, but bright at the same time. Really nice.
-
ok those are very good
-
Those are very nice indeed! I almost didn't believe they were the same models I grew up with.
-
Really lovely.
I agree, 8 is a perfect number for a batch of painting (although 6 isn't bad either lol)
-
Looking good!
-
Cheers guys.
One thing I have learnt painting dark ages figures (or any figure with drab clothing) is that a nicely painted shield will really lift the scheme. So I put in some extra effort in that area. It goes against my usual ethos of trying to make a natural look, but I think it's worth it - sacrifice some realism for some visual appeal.
-
Those are very nicely done! Looking forward to seeing some more now
-
Very nice paint job.
Always got a soft spot for Rohan for the AngloSaxon link...
plus you can get them cheap-as on ebay/trademe which is a bonus...
-
Good work on these,look great
-
"And Rohan shall answer!" 8)
And I like the SAGA connection - I'm planning to paint up a force using the Norman warband list (cavalry!) (I also have the fan-made Middle-Earth lists/battle boards, but I'm still to master the basic rules without all kinds of special stuff being added)
-
Yep, Saga is the eventual aim, but will probably game with LotR SBG first, it works well at lower numbers. I see many people using the Norman board for Rohan, though I would probably swap out the missile activations for some from the Anglo-Dane board. Shooting is for elves!
Anyway, speaking of shooting.

Not as visually interesting as the shield guys, but they were a lot quicker to paint. The duplicates in the unit are a shame, one of the perils of buying from ebay - these are all the archers I own so I'm stuck with em.
Already started to build a unit of cavalry, got 8 ready for primer, not sure if I will tackle them all together or split them into two lots. They will definitely take longer then the previous batches, but I would like to get them done by month end if I can. No deadline as such, just it would be nice to tick off half a force in just one month. Fingers crossed.
-
Cavalry is a pain in one's backside to paint, as progress feels so damn slow. Worth it when you have a full unit charging across the table though :)
Jeez, I just realized that comment turned out a rhyme lol
-
My first unit of cavalry riding into action.
There's more waffle and chatter on my blog page, for those interested - http://paintsngluenrocknroll.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/riders-of-rohan-painted.html (http://paintsngluenrocknroll.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/riders-of-rohan-painted.html)

Wow, really nice work there.
-
Blimey - better get out of the way! lol
-
I agree, they look stunning in their muted colours.
-
It's my first look at this thread, and it takes the breath away. Love the palette, and your brushwork leaves me green with envy.
I'd better keep practising.
-
Excellent stuff. Painting some Rohirrim myself and these are inspirational.
-
Luvly! :-* The shading on those horses is phenomenal.
-
Absolutely gorgeous :-* That Royal Guardsman fits in very well too.
-
I have moved on to Durin's folk, so retitled the thread to include all my Middle Earth painting. First up, dwarf rangers. More blather and pics and even a painting guide on my blogger (http://paintsngluenrocknroll.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/dwarf-rangers.html).

Great stuff :-* :-* :-*
The muted colours are sublime 8)

-
Wow, I never really liked these plastic LotR dwarf rangers I found them too flat, but these are awesome :o :o
thanks for sharing
cheers Thomas
-
Amazing work! Great earthy colours and those tartans are keen and just the right splash of colour to keep them from being dull!
-
:o Those are incredible! Brilliant choices of colours... Well done! :D
-
Amazing. Personally I always loved the LotR Dwarf range. Great figures!
-
Nice painting.
-
Those dwarf rangers are stunningly good, just beautifully done.
-
Thanks for all the feedback, good to see others like the range, I don't see many dwarfs around here. Next up, some of the armoured warriors, got a big game coming up mid-October, would be nice to have them finished by then, but it's a tall order.
Tall order. Dwarfs. See what I did there? ;)
-
Nice work - as mentioned above, those muted colours are nicely set off by the 'tartan'. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the Dwarf Warriors as they are not my favourite scuplts, and the ones I have at home are languishing in their box due to lack of inspiration.
-
Beautiful dwarfs. I agree, the blue off-sets the muted colours particularly well. Whenever I try to combine colours the end result is...nothing short of miserable.
I haven't ever seen those figures before, but they look pretty decent. LOTR plastics I take it? Very nicely done.
-
Just caught this thread.
Really nice work. sir.
:-* :-*
I MUST get back to my own LOTR stuff soon.... ::)
This thread is another one for great inspiration.
:D
-
A few changes to the original plan (as ever ::) ) means I have swapped to uruk hai. Got a big game of WOTR planned and just painting things up rapidly among a small group of us. I went with uruk hai, lots of points for little time. These are speed painted, a bit dull if I am honest, but it matters less with these models.

The last group would make a useful Saga unit of berserkers and command figure, which is nice.
-
Amazing. Personally I always loved the LotR Dwarf range. Great figures!
Agreed.
I really regret selling off the box of them I had, boo!
-
Some great paint work going on in this thread.
-
Finally got some warg riders painted up, thanks to the pressure of the Lead Painting League. Got some Rohan reinforcements on the way soon.

-
I painted these as part of LPL, figure it's safe to add them now. That brings my Rohan force up to 24 infantry and 8 horses. I need more cavalry!

Just discovered this thread and am so impressive with your work. Great, great stuff. Thanks for posting.

Excellent 8)

Some good updates here 8) 8)

Wonderful!
I just need to finish another couple of skeleton units for my God of Battles Lords of Undeath, then I shall also turn my attention to some Riders of Rohan to use for both SAGA (Norman proxies) and God of Battles!
-
Love the Rohan
-
I really like the Rohan and Warg Riders. Congrats on the way they have turned out - great painting.
-
I just ran across this thread and wanted to say how great everything looks! I particularly like the variations in the fur on the wargs. Very nice! I've just recently dived back into painting up my own LOTR collection so seeing PLOGs like this is always inspirational. ;)
-
Thank you kind sirs. At some point I must get some better photos of the warg riders up. And get more painted of course. :D
-
It's been a while ( :o ;)), but finally got round to painting up my Rohan cavalry, with Eomer leading the charge.

Now I have enough to play small games of Saga or Dragon Rampant. I do have plenty more plastics and a few metal characters, so maybe I will add them at some point. I have also painted some Mordor reinforcements, I will post those in a few days.
-
Somehow missed this thread great work all round :-* :-* :-*
-
Those Rohirim are beautiful! I'm glad to see you are still turning out these excellent middle earth figures.
-
Thanks. I love the LotR range and I have plenty more to paint, it's just finding the time. I need a time turner!
-
I need a time turner!
+1. Nice painting on some great sculpts. Like the dark reddish purple in combination with the green.
-
Blooming lovely. Best outfits in the movies, and thus the best miniatures of the movies! :-*
-
Agreed, love the Rohan range, though all the other stuff is well done too. It's a shame they are not multi part plastics like the Perry twins now do under their own badge (I think I'm right in saying it was they who sculpted pretty much the whole LotR range). There's a reasonable range of poses, but you can't help but have duplicates even in a small group.
-
Simply wonderful, I really like your style of painting. Do you use a lot of washes & glazes?
I really like the Rohan range too, quite a number of them mix in well with my Dark Age stuff.
-
Thank you kind sir. I do indeed wash and glaze. If I can paint a figure without any highlighting, I will - start from white primer and work up, lightest colours on first, glaze on the shading as much as possible. That's my technique whenever I can make it work, it seems okay here.
-
And now, some Mordor. First shot is a group photo, then some close ups.

The Mordor army is superb, well done!! :)
-
Great stuff - lovely colours and superb work on the metals in particular!
-
Amazing as usual! You definitely have a recognizable style.
