Title: Suber's HeroQuest
Post by: Suber on 04 July 2014, 10:50:28 AM
Long time I didn't post in the forum :(. Due to my general lazyness and remarkably mental scattering, I had totally forgot about showing my ongoing HeroQuest project! Let me bring you what I got so far!

First of all, the main characters ;)

And the baddies!

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2014/04/project-heroquest-baddies-bosses.html

The Fimir:

Then this Orc madness:

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2014/05/project-heroquest-orcs-pt-2.html

I made then a few tombs (by now you can see that I got way too much of everything! :? )

Aaand my latest work so far, these Goblins and Orc Shaman:

I still have a lot of work ahead, but this is slowly growing and growing. I'll try to keep you updated on this!

Nice old HeroQuest minis, and a SPLENDID paint job.

I'm green with envy, but waiting for more.

Thanks for sharing.

My absurd fish memory has prevented me from updating this thread :(, but I've done some serious progress since the last time I posted anything here.

I have painted some Chaos Warriors:

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2014/08/project-heroquest-chaos-warriors.html?m=0

I didn't dare to paint them in other colour than black, I'm afraid. I really argued with myself on the subject, but I finally opted for this scheme.

I also painted the Undead:

I haven't been able to recover my four original Skellies, so I have replaced one of them with this other guy from the Dark World boardgame:

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.it/2014/09/project-heroquest-undead.html

And the furniture. I tried to replace as much cardboard as I was able:

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2014/07/project-heroquest-few-pieces-of_7.html

(Wonderful stuff from Thomarillion and Fenris Games).
I really wanted to replace the original cardboard and do some proper stuff as I did with the tombs (as you can see them above in this thread), but by then I was getting lazier and lazier, so I simply painted the rest of the original furniture and let the carboard live ;)

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2014/10/project-heroquest-rest-of-furniture.html

So I finally have recovered a full functional copy of HeroQuest :) Hooray!

Game pics coming soon, I promise

Thank you all! :)

As promised, here you have my AAR. Can't remember when I last played this game, but I guess it was about mid 90's, some of the expansions. Anyway, I was so eager to play this again! ::)

Doesn't look that impressive so fat, I know, know :D. Just give me some minutes... ;)
We tried the first scenario in the booklet, The Trial. he adventurers must explore the dungeon and eventually get to kill the Gargoyle.

As the rules are reeeally easy, I didn't have any problem catching them up again. That has become an issue for me, as it seems I have lost my ability to get any concentration on complex rulesets along the years :(. Fortunately this wasn't the case, all went smooth and easy :).

The characters found the Gargoyle and tried to slain the beast

Using the power both of magic and sheer muscle

Hooray!
As the game was so quick, we decided to play a second round ;). For that purpose we went on the second scenario, The rescue of Sir Ragnar.

Back to battle again!

As we were now familiar with the rules, the game was even quicker (not that it was difficult or anything, just having to manage a couple of rules :D)

Will our heroes be able to rescue Sir Ragnar?

By the skin of their teeth!

You can find both (complete) reports in the blog:

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2014/10/playing-heroquest.html?m=0

I must say I enjoyed it just like the very first day. You may say it is nostalgia, but my mates were newcomers to the game and they pretty much enjoyed it too! So I can say HeroQuest still rocks 25 years later! :)

Projects are never finished, just temporarily released to oblivion ;)

Once I had all my core game ended, it was time to get on the next stage of the project, the expansions! I have gathered the Ogres first. These models are a slight challenge for me, don't find them particularly easy, not having precisely a wide variety of poses or pieces. I was trying a different approach than the usual, the ugly-poor-bastard-giant-guys, using just a couple of brownish colours and nothing else. I had already gone through that way in the past, but I didn't want that this time. What if I tried a more civilized, distinguished style, just as the very box illustration suggests?

This is what I got with this new approach:

The use of arabesques and trimmings resulted in an interesting option. Suddenly it made the clothes look much more opulent and stylish, almost silky :P

Not really sure if the inspiration is just medieval European, Byzantine, Arabic or what, but it seemed to work...

So I guess It's a deal!

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2015/02/project-heroquest-ogres.html?m=0

My next step should be the Wizards (if I ever get to find all of them, I'll have to delve deep in my boxes...)

Brilliant. I always enjoyed the idea of Ogres sometimes being wealthy mercenaries of human (or slightly under) intelligence, instead of just small smelly giants. The fancy clothes make them look like professional footballers (okay, perhaps more than slightly under human intelligence) splashing their cash on fancy clothes and bling.

Back to the project again! You had already seen my Orc Shaman, but I still had to bring the rest. I've been able to find both the High Mage and the Storm Master within my old lost boxes, but haven't been able to find the Necrromancer, I needed some eBay help... sigh.

Nevermind, here they are!

Ok, some more minis for the HeroQuest project. Last bunch I had pending. It took me some time to put again all the minis and enough weaponsn together, but I finally somehow managed to get this:

No complicated features, as usual, just an efficient quick paintjob, enough to deploy them on the board.

Besides, I found this other gentleman in one of my bits boxes; he looks more than ready to lead the mercenaries to glory or death (or both!)

With these I have finally painted all the original minis, both from the core game and all the expansions. Hooray! ;D

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.de/2015/05/project-heroquest-end-of-stage-2.html

At some point in the future I must begin to look for alternative minis in the Oldschool fashion to expand the ranges. That will come, that will come...

And still more, for the FANTASTIC paint job you did with them.

It's been a long time! But I have patience ;)
Next stage in my long-time plan for my HeroQuest is finding new minis with that old-style looking that make them fit in any classic dungeon. These Otherworld skeletons were of course my first choice:

Painted in my usual lazy style, they are however enough for tabletop purposes.

Worst part of this is that I suddenly have felt the scary desire of collecting a few more skellies; and even a few more... :D so I can deploy a humble Undead horde. No purpose at all yet, it's just the urge of collecting and painting. Oh, my, it's that syndrome attacking again... ;D

Here you have the blog post ;):

Back to this poor thread! A friend recently handed me over this lovely guy, a Citadel Barbarian dated 1985.

Awesome.
One of the projects always on my mind is updating my own.
I have a good as new basic box but most of my expansion (everything that was released in the Netherlands) is coverd in thick icky oilpaint applied in a manner  as only an enthusiastice 12 year old with no guide lines or experience could apply

Good to see someone got it right.

Latest addition are these pig-faced Orcs by Otherworld. I'm aware that not everyone will like the pig concept, but I find them terribly hilarious, and like every other Otherworld mini, they are pure love.

I've got another dungeon dweller, Hasslefree again. I was looking for some Chaos Warriors to provide some company to my HQ ones. I saw this one and fell in love. I first tried some colour on. Nothing too risky, classic red:

Buuuut... Honestly, I didn't see it. This is my nemesis, one of those things you see other people achieve gorgeously, but each time I try, I fail. Miserably. I simply cannot make colours work on this kind of armour.
Then I tried a totally different approach. Brass!

Not any wonder, but at least this allows me to sleep ::). Transitions look smoother in hand. They really do :?

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2016/06/shiny-lord-of-chaos.html

I'm aware there's quite a difference between this sculpt and the original HeroQuest Chaos Warriors, but nevertheless I hope it can work. When I get my Pantheon of Chaos Warriors I'll get another chance to try colours again...
Title: Re: Suber's HeroQuest
Post by: Malebolgia on 20 June 2016, 09:39:01 AM
Both look nice! For the red I recommend getting deeper shades...much deeper. You can use brown tones to shade the red, that always works well. And for more oomph for the red, you can take P3 Coal Black (one of my favorite paints) to glaze the deepest shades. That adds a more interesting hue to the red than pure brown or black.
For higlighting it works well if you approach it like NMM, so highlight it in the way you would highlight metal with bright tones to make them pop. Here's an example of what I mean:

http://paintoholic.nl/images/vlad2.jpg

So adding more contrast will really help out with the red. It helps it pop and stand out more. Deeper shades and stronger highlights. But doing red armour is a bit of a b*tch, so you're not making it easy for yourself ;)
Title: Re: Suber's HeroQuest
Post by: Daeothar on 20 June 2016, 11:18:08 AM
Try shading your deepest red with a blue hue, like purple or even straight dark blue (mixed in with your base colour obviously). But keep it very little, or things will start looking weird. (which may be a good thing, when considering Chaos Warrriors of course lol )

The purple will really make the red pop, especially when you then highlight towards orange.

I do like the red version better than the brass one, so keep at it. :D

(but trust me on the purple...)

I reckon that's very sound advice. One thing I like for red armour is a very thin, translucent coat of a bright red over a white undercoat (pre-shaded or otherwise), then a wash of purple ink/wash for the shading and a wash of yellow to pick out the highlights and enrich the red.

A year with no updates :( :( Need a remedy for that!

As you all may know, one does not simply walk into Hasslefree's web and leave without getting anything ;). Some time ago I just did that and, as I was browsing, I knew I had a new project in hands. I got female minis of the heroes so I can indistinctly use them. This is what I mean:

The Barbarian

The Dwarf

The Elf

And the Wizard

I mean, look at those minis, it was love at first sight, I couldn't but do this :D

Here you have with their original counterparts:

The problem now is that I want to do the same with every game I have (ouch!)
