The black undersuits on the Judges are beautifully done, and I love the simple - no, elegant - basing that ties them all together. Love the ape gang!

I've only just found this thread. I must say, your Judges are my favourite! I'm sitting with a lot of those miniatures in my painting table, but unfortunatly they're never going to look half as good as yours!!

Post by: Duff on January 20, 2015, 09:03:15 PM: There is no trick to it, it isn't a matter of washes or drybrushing (though I will occasionally use a wash to colour the highlights, as I did with the Judda). It's just standard layering, you just have to be prepared to leave lots of black (or whatever the base colour is) on show, and only highlight where the light hits and would reflect. You can often hold up a figure and see where the light reflects most, which tells you where to put the highlights. Fight the temptation to highlight just because there is some sculpted detail and if in doubt, leave it black. If you are highlighting an area with light reflected from below (the underside of an arm or leg for instance), stop a couple of highlights from the lightest colour you will use on areas that are reflecting direct light. And be consistent with highlight location, as that is what fools the eye into accepting the shiny look. Best advice I can give though is to have some photos of the real thing handy when painting. Then it is just a matter of practice.

I think the best part is the use of a lot of non-grey colours in the mix. It gives the hint of reflections of surrounding objects, and makes the metal look a lot less... "sterile" or something. Anyway they're fiendishly good!

True, though they used camera trickery to make the Blam photo look ok.

A lot of my stuff is Denizen so they are more 25mm than the Mongoose 30mm stuff. They look like pixies with pulse rifles.

I think Aquila painted the mounted Dredd and Anderson figures for them before taking up putty pushing (the norts and some of the most recent Judges have been by him, talented little bugger). Matt has mentioned a Med Judge on Lawgiver next.
