Title: Adding an RGS boxcar, Freight Cars for Calamity
Post by: Heisler on 20 July 2014, 04:40:57 PM
I know there hasn't been a whole lot of action in Calamity of late, but I have been working on it. More miniatures are being added to the population and I have been slaving away on one of my "Hero" buildings as well. However, since that building has just about reached the assembly point I didn't want to haul it with me this weekend. Instead I grabbed four of my freight cars (kind of at random) and decided to do a little weathering work. You can follow the process on my blog at:

Here is the finished project if you don't want to see the start to finish progression:

Finished off a couple of Boxcars for Calamity
First up: Denver, South Park & Pacific

And finished

Not terribly happy with the streaking effect I tried, but I think the next set will be better. I did just need to call these done though. Here is the steps I went through.

Nice work.
Love the weathering, just right.
 :-* :-* :-*

This is timely as I really need to get to it with my train and rolling stock soon.
We played a game last night and used the train, but it looked really out of place unfinished.

Soon......

Heisler, that is some superb weathering and decal-age. I love the 'south park' logo, beautiful.

Yes...  lol

And finally something new to add to the roll, a private named Refrigerator (Reefer) Car. Here are the beauty shots, more pictures of the process can be found on my blog: http://www.wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2014/11/a-reefer-for-c-and-calamity.html (http://www.wargamesandrailroads.blogspot.com/2014/11/a-reefer-for-c-and-calamity.html)

Definitely not my best work, but it gets the job done.

It does more than that!
Brilliant bit of weathering, sir.

And since all my weathering stuff was out I finally finished off this caboose conversion. It started life as your more standard eight wheel caboose and now its a 4 wheel "bobber" caboose, complete with my custom decals. The weathering looks a little splotchy in the photographs, it doesn't look like that under the worklights though. I will have to go in and see if I can smooth that out a bit.

Nice bobber Heisler. The weathering looks cool to me. All your cars have excellent weathering.

Is the wheelbase on that bobber too short? It looks a little short and thus bumpy.

Cheers

It's nice too see an understanding and love for a subject transfered into paint.Although to a Northern lad using something that should only be in a pint to fix your weathering .Well its wrong. Plain wrong,it might even be a sin you know.(more tham spilling a fresh one) lol
But I am Interested to see how you tackle the engine.
Mark.

It is short. It should be 9' for the prototype and this is only 6 1/2'. That's why I hesitated on converting both of my cabooses using these parts. I'm probably going to have to make my own swheel frames to get the 9' wheelbase. I have never managed to find any commercial parts to do this with. It would be really expensive to raid an On3 kit for the wheel frames.

You know after I wrote that I realized that Grandt Line makes an On3 C&S Caboose, I have been looking for the parts by the wrong name! Thanks for turning the lights on.

An RGS boxcar for the growing fleet. I really need to get to the C&N Boxcars next. This one has a little conversion work on it. The ladders have been removed from the sides and replaced with grab irons. Compare that look to the DSP&P and CC versions.
