Title: Dream cars from 1934 to 1970
Post by: Vanvlak on 23 July 2014, 06:36:27 AM
Although not 100% pulp, most of the concept cars shown on this BBC News feature
http://www.bbc.com/news/in-pictures-28408408 (http://www.bbc.com/news/in-pictures-28408408)
come from the '30s to the '50s, and could fit in well in a variety of scenarios.

My own favourite is the GM I XP21 from 1953.

The Timbs Special is pretty nuts. I can see it as a hero car, kept in a secret garage, like Black Beauty, the Batmobile, or the Bluesmobile.

The huge enclosed rear area is fantastic - gives the mind all sorts of room to imagine hidden machine guns or even a pop-up turbojet!

I'm a lucky guy.  I own my dream car… a 1963 Porsche 356.

That's a sweet car!

I love some of those tight little 50's & 60's sports cars. Another one with great lines is the BMW 507 Roadster.

My own ride is a BMW motorcycle, though it's not of such elderly vintage being only form the 80's. Sometimes I think about getting a Royal Enfield as a second bike though, which would be a far pulpier vehicle  lol

This is my favourite:

The Napier Railton Special is powered by Napier Lion XI gasoline aero engine used in the First World War.  The engine has 12 cylinders in three banks of four arranged in a ‘W’ or broad arrow configuration.  With a total capacity of 24 litres it has a rated power of 530bhp at 2,350rpm.  Using double overhead camshafts it has four valves and two spark plugs per cylinder.

It's a not a dream car, but what about the Tatra 97, the original Czech model for the car that became the VW bug (Herr Doktor Porsche not being above a little blatant plagiarism).

Quote
Tatra sued Porsche for damages, and Porsche was willing to settle. However, Hitler canceled this, saying he 'would settle the matter.' [5] When Czechoslovakia was invaded by the Nazis, the production of the T97 was immediately halted, and the lawsuit dropped. After the war, Tatra reopened the lawsuit against Volkswagen. In 1967, the matter was settled when Volkswagen paid Tatra 3,000,000 Deutsche Mark in compensation.

Good lord what a monster.

The fact that the drivetrain appears to be barely one step above that of a bicycle might be more terrifying than the sheer size though!

EDIT: It's 28 L and only FOUR CYLINDERS!?! What's it take to start that thing? A Coffman starter firing 75mm shells?!

I want a VW Thing or a Kubelwagon.  My 'dreams' are modest...

Most fun I ever had in a car, with my clothes on, was my '73 Thing!!

I took a Type 2 transporter (VW Bus) front mount bracket & adapted it to stow my spare tyre Kübelwagen fashion, on the bonnet where it belongs!!

Biggest caveat: if you live ANYWHERE it gets cold, avoid the '74-'75 models.
They use the well know highly inefficient Beetle heater system, which is a spectacular failure in the all sheet metal & vinyl bucket that is a Thing.
The '73 boasts a petrol fueled turbo heater that, properly maintained and tested monthly, will toast your chestnuts nicely in all but the most frigid weather!!  The damn thing is nothing more than a ram jet engine, strapped securely in place in the cargo well, just the other side of the dash panel, that's been de-tunes to produce heat, rather than thrust.  When it roars, you ARE warm!!

Lotsa stories & very fond memories of 6 delightful years with that special vehicle.
Suffice to say it takes EVERY last ounce of pride out of a man to pay the asking price for a used car.
& she was well worth every single penny!!

the javelin is nice. I personally want a 69 Pontiac GTO, a 66 Dodge Malibu, almost any 60's Mustang, heck any muscle car from the 50's-60's. America knew how to make good looking cars, Europe (bar a few pre-70's ferrari's) had no clue on making nice cars - and still don't. (nope, I do not like any of the new 'super' cars).

IMHO they stopped making cars after '76.  I remember doing a road trip in the Caddy.  We hit a hundred mph.  Pinned the speedo.  I mentioned it to the passengers who thought it was nice and smooth for that speed.  Then I put my foot down and we LEPT forward.  Wotta motor.

Hello all,

I know it's out of period, but I think only seeing this car is not enough. HEARING is believing. It seems like I'm not the only one grinning uncontrollably when confronted with this kind of technology:

I find it conveys much of the exhilaration caused by riding such a machine.

love this thread even though I might be a little late.
my dream cars are all 60's muscle cars - chevy el camino, dodge dart, and impala wagons.

for pulp gaming i always thought a Ford gt50 or an mg-a looked especially enticing.
