Title: Kentucky Jones: On Wings of Glory or Tracks Of Death (Pulp Alley AAR)
Post by: Dr. The Viking on July 24, 2014, 12:57:50 PM
So I had a little action with Pulp Alley.

This was the fifth instalment in a series of adventures featuring Kentucky Jones and his nemesis General Vogel.

Scenario:

The good doctor is trying to escape the clutches of the Nazis after having foiled their plot to start an ancient buried alien spaceship (Scenario 4).

The plane he used to get to Turbanistan in the first place was left at the airfield while the Doctor pursued his adventures. Upon coming back to the airfield Jones finds out that the locals have siphoned the petrol from the airplane. The keys were left with a trusted friend not far from the field.

Jones and colleagues must get petrol and keys  in order to attempt the major plot point - the air plane.

General Vogel is not going to stand idle by and watch Jones escape. He has decided to blow the airplane to bits and pieces in demonstrative fashion using the guns of the local emirs trusty tank.

But to do this he must first locate the driver and alarm the guards of the fortress so that they do not let Jones airplane leave.

The tank driver is located by Elsa, but Elouise is not going to let her reach him

At this point the emirs private militia arrived and seized both sides and stopped the fighting from developing further.

The game ended here due to turn limit. No one managed to get a single plot point. Quite unexpected.

I think what happened was in part that the players tried to shoot each other away rather than just go for the objectives. This is a common thing the first times people play Alley I think.

I will probably try the scenario again and see if it happens again. I was surprised that no one tried to scale the walls of the fort or something similar drastic.

Although an odd unexpected ending, great nice action and a well written report! 8)

Looks like you had some fun, even if the conclusion was a bit odd! I like your scenery, looking forward to seeing that tank in action.

Beautiful terrain and miniatures!  :-* :-*

I have an old friend that plays once in awhile, and we invariably ignore the plot points and just blast the heck out of each other.  It's just the style of play he enjoys and I'm more than happy to play along.  lol lol

It looks like you all had a great game, some fun and some laughs together. And that's the best Plot Point to have.  :D

Nice.  ;)

Thanks Prof!

Looks like you had some fun, even if the conclusion was a bit odd! I like your scenery, looking forward to seeing that tank in action.

Thank you. I hope to try out the tank with the vehicles rules in a not too distant future.

Now I just have to see if Kentucky will escape the clutches of the emir.

Beautiful terrain and miniatures!  :-* :-*

Thank you old boy. As mentioned I've seen this before. It takes some time for players to get used to the concept perhaps.

I think the set time limit should have been done away with perhaps. Bad umpire judgement. I was never really keen on fixed limits like this, especially when the scenario sort of already has fixed possible endings included. If the plane was shot, well - then it would have ended... or if the plane had gotten away.

Lesson learned!  lol

oh, great!  :-*

Thanks and well spotted. I use picasa to upload my photos and it has a 'cinemascope' button that I just press and achieve this result. I thought it was rather fitting for Pulp style gaming.

A really NICE AAR, I especially like the tank  :-*

Thank you! Well, I would be lying if I said that I wasn't happy with that tank. I need to use it more though.  lol

Perhaps it should just start turning up here or there when I play.

It was still great fun, even though we didn't get to a conclusion.

Good to hear matey! I trust you will be there when Kentucky tries to sneak out through the dungeons of the emirs palace?

Beautiful terrain and toys!! Thanks for posting it up, a great read with the morning tea.

Thank you sir!

Oooooohh...Tank... >:D

Ummm. Yeah. Not sure I catch your drift.  o_o :D

Too true. Too true. And thanks!  :D

Well, I like what you have done with it...

You have done a nicer job on the rear deck. Looks shorter, too... but that's got to be angle of the shot, yeah?

Thank you... I was straining to believe it was somehow a conversion of the Copplestone beast.

The Pardulon Heavy Battle Tank Mk. XIV is just about perfect!

I think Mini-Figs do something similar, as well as other 'tanks' in 28mm. Can any body else back me up/provide a link ? (I am no good at all this 'E-leck Trickery' stuff)

Yup, we were just chatting about this last week. I think the turn limit is generally a good idea, because it sets the appropriate tone and encourages action. But there are times when it's probably better to go ahead and play a couple more turns if everyone is in agreement.  ;)

It's like when a movie ends too abruptly and it leaves me wondering why they didn't finish it.  lol lol

Why not make up your own local rule. It could be:- Each player declares for or against another move; Each player then throws the health dice type for the highest character still on his/her feet; Count the 'Votes' (Dice again if a draw).
Example- Player 1 (in favour of another round) throws a D10 & scores a 9.
Players 2 & 3 (against another round) throw a D10 & a D8, but score a 3 & a 5.
9 votes for another round, 8 votes against. Therefore there will be another round.

Alternatively you could use the method in the excellent Peter Pig game 'AK47'. In that one of the players rolls a D6 at the end of the move & the score is taken away from a run down 'clock' so, for example, the 'clock' now stands at 6. At the end of this move the dice is thrown, and if the score is '6' the game ends, but the game could go on for up to six more moves if the person throwing the dice keeps throwing ones. I have a great knack of throwing ones in a wargame, but never when I want to.
