Title: Looking for input on 6mm building designs
Post by: sean_68333 on July 29, 2014, 12:57:57 AM
Here are a few building designs that I have been working on.  These are for 6mm scale games.  I would appreciate your thoughts.  Good, bad, or ugly?

Thanks.

Good enough for me, can see them used in some far away colonies of Mankind. Simple and functional.

remove (at the very least on the first floor) the windows and move doors to the roof (as trap doors) and I can see them as Southwest Adobes from pre-contact North America.)

Edit: Resin or metal?

Gracias,

Glenn

They will probably be resin.

They will probably be resin.

That might make conversions easier for me...

I've been working on some door and window designs.  Again, I would appreciate your input on these.

My intent would be to use these for scratch building terrain.

Basic door designs

Basic window designs

Large/Garage door designs

Detailed door designs (I added some texture)

With the detailed doors, I think the one on the left is a bit too busy.  Maybe after I saw it painted I would like it more, but I think the one on the right looks better.  What do you all think?

Go for the right one, it definitively looks better than the other one.

I got a couple of my designs printed.  I would love to hear your thoughts on these.

I must admit that for such a simple design why go all the way to get them printed  ???

The doors would be incredibly easy to make from scratch along with the buildings themselves. And if printing them was your only option (for whatever reason) why not do something a bit more complecated/less formulaic?

cheers

Complex - good, complicated - bad.

Why?  Maybe to have them capable of cheap mass production on demand?  To avoid the tedium of scratch building 100 or even 10 of the things?

Gracias,

Glenn

I have just started using 3D modeling software.  This is my first design and I wanted to see how the model looked in hand.  It is one thing to see a design on the screen, but when you actually have it set next to other models you get a true idea of the scale and appearance.

I do plan to make more complex designs.  However, even this basic design can be cast and I can produce resin version for not a ton of money.  As Conquistador mentioned, being able to produce lots of these via a mold would save tremendous amounts of time compared to scratch building each one.

Would the building features be much cheaper after factoring in the costs of the silicone and resin?

I guess the building would, due to its size, but the little pieces might not be... Just a thought, as if the difference is only small, you can simply print what you need specific to each project (and tweak each one as you desire too).

Why not make one and have it cast? Even if I need two of something I make one and cast it.

Fair comment and the intention behind my post was regrading making one and cast although that didn't really come through  :?

Modularity would be an avenue to explore if you want to make it a viable option  :)
