Title: Transforming figures
Post by: rumacara on 04 August 2014, 09:58:51 AM
Hello all

When i started this hobby many years ago, i never thought ending on a forum like LAF and putting pics and comments everywhere.
I´m glad i did.
This is the right place for inspiration and sharing information, tips, painting styles and even the wonderfull pieces of terrain shown here.
One of the things this hobby brings to me and others and that i take real pleasure in doing are conversions of miniatures. That miniature we always wished but it doesnt exists anywhere!!!
Well, why not doing it?

With an idea of a friend from LAF and the support of many others i thought in doing a thread of my own regarding only conversions, either painted or not so that people can take inspiration and ideas for doing their own.
Therefore this thread is dedicated to all those LAFFERS who support my crazy ideas and like them but specially to a crazy french who surpasses my humble conversions with his own work.
Eric, this thread is mainly for you and your creative imagination. May it never stops and within some years i may visit France or you Portugal and we sit drinking beer and laughing from our conversions.

People are free to contact me with questions. I´m happy to answer them.

Without any more words (except explaining the conversions) here are the miniatures.

Cheers

Rui

1st one, the first king of Portugal in is youth.
Miniature from GW metal with a plastic head from empire militia and head and coif sculped on the miniature.
Items glued in the horse except the bad wich is also sculped.

From time to time i will be placing pictures of my conversions so get back for more please.
People are welcome to place their own conversions here if they wich. All i ask is a brief explanation of what they did so that others find as much information as possible.

These 4 where made from the GW empire militia plastic box.
The clothes where sculped with green stuff and several plastic items where glued.

Nice conversions
Title: Re: Transforming figures
Post by: rumacara on 04 August 2014, 10:12:09 AM
The next ones are my latest ones.
They are intent to a mixed army of romans and celtiberians for the Sertório´s civil war period.

Plastic Warlord cesarian romans, 1 barehead from west wind, other from Companion miniatures and the standart is a WF germanic one i removed from a figure plus a metal spear cut to size.
Some of the celtiberians on Sertórios army would be equiped with captured roman equipment and that´s the look i want in at least one unit.

Thanks Dr. De´Ath

You will see many more coming up.
Title: Re: Transforming figures
Post by: rumacara on 04 August 2014, 10:18:51 AM
next ones are 20mm.
First is a camel full of stuff for a bagage train.
Camel from Hat plastic and driver is a Tumbling Dice miniature. Another camel is next to see the sculping items.
The others are mainly Tumbling Dice metal (both horses and drivers) except the last driver (newline designs celt). Again items are sculped in the horses.

Next one is again a GW plastic empire militia with a kilt sculped and the hands drilled for a flag pole.

4 more from the lovelly imperial militia from GW.
Again kilts sculped plus helmet.

One i made today.
A celtiberian mounted warrior.

Base is a companion miniature with a west wind head, plastic warlord cesarian roman arm and green stuff.
Still need some adjustments but almost ready.

Hello Frank

Thanks for the comments

I intend on place here as many converted figures as possible so that everyone can take ideas from them to their collections.

Here is another one:

Another highlander this time a more complex one.
Base is a skeleton from GW plus bretonian head, plastic shield, metal hand with sword. The rest is green stuff.

Title: Re: Transforming figures
Post by: rumacara on 05 August 2014, 08:30:29 AM
This one is another 20mm from tumbling dice.
The only bits sculped are on the horse.

Title: Re: Transforming figures
Post by: rumacara on 05 August 2014, 08:36:33 AM
And finally for today.
A set of standard bearers from GW bretonians.
Hands drilled and a metal pin added plus painting and the flags.

A king with chainmail sculped. The original is on the left.

2 ancient germans from Black Tree Designs. Instead of spears i sculped some sacks so that they look as if coming from a raid. Now they look more like vikings.

The other also a halberdier had the same removed, hands drilled and a spear glued. Rest is painting.

a plastic ex-Gondor Ranger bowman from The excellent Lord of the ring (perry's sculpting) range of GW.

turned into a Donjon & dragon assassin/thief for my son.

The hand crossbow is coming from a heroclix ninja. The arm with sword is a Morord plastic Orc. The back sword scabbard is made with a bit of lead take off from a 28 figurine base, and shaped into a scabbard with a cutter.

"Garanty without Green stuff", Re-animator approved !

Title: Re: Transforming figures
Post by: rumacara on 07 October 2014, 11:37:23 PM
Hello Eric

These miniatures are to game Song of Blades and Heroes but with a "historical" favor.
Basically something like the Barons Wars in England at the 13th century.
Probably i will add a kind of a wild tribe like vikings but with a lot of furs.
Title: Re: Transforming figures

Hi Rui

Nifty conversion skills being exhibited here  8)

My favourites are the Norman archer and of course the more recent Fireforge work  :-*

From your comments your project seems to be taking something of an Imagi-Nation route.  Is this right? If so did GoT inspire you? I certainly succombed to recreating the medieval period as I want to rather than as it 'strictly' was!  lol
Title: Re: Transforming figures
Post by: rumacara on 01 November 2014, 09:22:42 PM
Well, GOT is always inspiring Steve but not the real inspiration.
This is an idea i´ve had several years ago and never trully completed.
By seing your thread i just gave it a go and transformed a few more figures to it so actually the real inspiration to pick it again was you and your project.
By no means i intend to do the same but something similar involving a castle with interiors, smaller than yours and a kind of GOT war with several factions.
I was hoping to see James casttle ready but not yet... :D
No fixed scenario.
I will try to give it a more historical favor rather than fantasy.
Title: Re: Transforming figures

That's interesting. I'll certainly be following your progress!  8)
Title: Re: Transforming figures
Post by: rumacara on 02 November 2014, 09:33:50 PM
And here are a few more conversions.

Again comments are always welcome.

First pic the 4.
Second pic is a man at arms straight from the box (fireforge sergeants) with a head from a victrix roman set generous offered by Hu Rhu. The archer has a body and head from the fireforge box plus 2 GW arms from the militia empire. The only thing i made was scratch a little the arms so that they didnt look to big on this figure.
The third and forth pics are a man at arms with a West Wind head and a hood sculped on his back. The arab is a leader of a faction, again body and arms from the fireforge box, plastic arab head from GB and a iron sword made by beating a clip and shaping it with a file. The cloak is a plastic one also from fireforge with a little green stuff to disguise some errors and come to shape with the head.

Great "allure", very smart in the posing of your rider !
 :-*

the horse is very impressive, i think.

The GW head doesn't look too big for a fireforge. Generaly GW are nearly 32mm in scale.

Title: Re: Transforming figures
Post by: pbjunky1 on 24 January 2015, 08:02:01 PM
Those look really nice, I particularly like the Celt/Viking. One thing I find useful when Kit bashing is to use the thin strips of plasticard which can be bought readily (Evergreen produced the ones I use) as straps. They have a more uniform look than green stuff made into straps and are ready to go so quicker to use.
Keep the conversion pictures coming, it is always inspiring to see what conversions others have achieved.

Comsquare, the use of West Wind heads its a must for so far they are the most usefull and cheap - 4 GBP for 20 heads. They offer enough variety for my maddness convertions. If you need some just pm me and we sort out something.

Thank you for the kind words Pbjunky1, Comsquare and Jevenkah.

Pbjunky1, the use of plasticard (evergreen) crossed my mind and i´ve tried in the past with 54mm. To be honest i do prefer green stuff for its easyer for me (or just getting used to it). Feel free to post anything here.

Jevenkah, i´m glad you found this thread and like it. Like i said in yours i get inspiration with your family work and games so please keep them coming. A joy to read and see the pics.
You have to put some more pics of your castle. Its lovelly.

I like the Fireforge casualty. Great idea.

Keep it coming.
Title: Re: Transforming figures
Post by: pbjunky1 on 27 January 2015, 07:19:37 PM
Here's the painted version. This is a warlord for a SAGA Mutatawwia warband. With SAGA warbands I like to put the Warlord (leader) on a larger base with an enemy casualty in this case a Templar seargent. The casualty is a Fireforge seargent with a Conquest head. I cut the head off a Fireforge kettle  to make his helmet.

The next pix show some Saracen casualties made from GB Arabs or Conquest Normans. A mixture of green stuff and cutting the miniatures to form different poses allows a lot of flexibility withthese plastics.

Some of these have made their way into Crusader Warlord vignettes already.

Title: Re: Transforming figures
Post by: pbjunky1 on 27 January 2015, 07:43:30 PM
Here are some Warlord Celts and Factory Germans made into casualty markers for such as Hail Ceaser. If the miniature is required to lie flat I put it on a belt sander  so it'll go flush with the base. If I want a very actioned pose I snip one foot loose from the stand and carefully bend the remaining leg so it is pitching the figure backwards or forwards.

I made the next figure for some Darkest Africa  games, he is a Ruga Ruga leader. The game didn't require him to pose with a casualty but  I thought it was quite in character. The leader is a Perry Mahdist body with his front leg cut free from the stand and his body bent back a bit so he has his foot raised to rest on his prisoner. His head is WF Zulu, his arms Perry ACW - with sword and pistol and his trench coat a Victrix napoleonic extra. His prisoner is a Redoubt metal ACW casualty.  I cut back his lower trousers with a dremel so they were 'thinner' than his somewhat voluminous pants. I used green stuff to smooth these and give the impression of boots. I also used green stuff to give the appearence of a canvas waistcoat and a strip of plasticard the look like a strap attached to the bag the figure had at its waist.

Title: Re: Transforming figures
Post by: pbjunky1 on 27 January 2015, 08:11:36 PM
Here are 3 more SAGA warlords. The Viking is a metal GB figure. He has one foot raised resting on a rock. I cut the rock and stand away so he could rest his foot on his slain opponent. The casualty was a Factory Saxon with a GB plastic head. I used a GB plastic viking spectacle helmet for his helmet. I carefully pin viced it out so it would partially go on his head as it fell off when he was struck down.
The next is a Hospitalar warlord. He is Fireforge with  green stuffed sleeves on his surcoat. I cut his horses front legs free from the stand to give it the appearence of rearing up. The casualty is a Conquest Norman infantry casualty with a GB Arab head.
The 1st Crusade Warlord is a metal GB. His casualty is a Factory saxon mail wearing body with a GB Arab head.  I gave him a green stuff sash. The trampled banner was a freedownload I found on the internet (Grimsby Wargames I think). I scattered bit of sand on it to give it that 'run over by a horse a lot' look.

Title: Re: Transforming figures

Ok last one I promise. This is a Scots Warlord. The figures are all as they come except the GB metal warlord has a Westwind head. The monks are Irregular and Westwind, the cross is a resin cross from Magnetic Displays.
As his stand was even bigger than those I usually use due to his relgious  posse being included I put the warlord on a 25mm stand and magnetised it so it sat in a little holder I made for it on the big stand. In this way he can show off his virtuous, religious, credentials as a man of God and then leave his  holy base to wander around the table  in the usual vicious, intemperate manner of a  dark age warlord.

Here are my latest transformations.
3 figures using Fireforge sergeants, heads from West Wind and some green stuff on it.

And now some women.
Plastics used - Fireforge foot sergeants, heads from Statuesque (via the Dice Bag Lady) and the rest is GS.

They work tremendously well, Rui. Well done.

I shall have to get some of those Statuesque lady heads... :)

They look great. I've used those heads on frostgrave bodies without needing to add green stuff due to the layers of winter clothing, but seeing how well they work on the fireforge bodies I may have to challenge my limited green stuff skill and give them a go. Thanks for sharing

Richard and Tyrionhalfman thanks for the comments.

Richard, like Tyrionhalfman says the heads look even better on the frostgrave bodies. With your skill and ideas you really should make some transformations. Also check the Crooked Dice heads packs. :)

Second picture:
All frostgrave cultist bodies with fireforge sergeants arms and GB arab heads.

May be !
To make my parts glued very well and sometime as "green", i use a mix of cyanolit glue and neoprene glue (black and Yellow one).
One face of cyanolit and one of neoprene, join the 2 pieces and it's become hard in a few seconds.
Just clean off when dry if some glue dry on the edge of the pieces glued all together.

For example see the red arrows, the horse is hold by the wounded goth with severals spots of glue on the touching edge between the 2 figurines.
Goth foot (or leg) glued to the horse's belly.
Back of the Goth to horse's base.

Now the pose is safety for playing in security with a transformed figurine...
