I will make this a general thread for my 2nd edition 40k orks, instead of just the tank.
Just painted this. I will add a tank commander when I have painted him. Painted with Tamiya enamel spray (Dark Yellow TS3) then GW Desert Yellow with increasing amounts of white added for the highlights. The Tank is a 1:48 Tamiya Marder III and in game will be used as a wartrukk with either heavy bolters or autocannons depending on how many points are free.
There will be an army to follow with mainly RT troopers with lots of 2nd edition models as well. This is the first model. I couldn't resist painting the tank before any of the foot troops after getting hooked on reading Da Great Queeg's excellent blog http://houseofqueeg.wordpress.com/ (http://houseofqueeg.wordpress.com/).
The second picture is a bit more yellowish than it is in real life.

so very awesome (blood axes always my favorite) :)
-
I might have to nick that!
-
Awesome stuff! So rogue trader using german armour :)
-
That is how it is done!
-
Real old school! Love it.
-
Thunbs up. A very convincing conversion.
-
What they all said - very in keeping with the RT Orky vibe.
-
Thank you very much for the encouraging replies. :)
-
so very awesome (blood axes always my favorite) :)
x2 Fits the Blood Axes very well.
Maybe the camo is just too 'oomie realistik ;) Add neon red camo dots and den idz propah Orky :D
-
Hey, that's a really stylish Blood Axe asset!
-
Maybe the camo is just too 'oomie realistik ;) Add neon red camo dots and den idz propah Orky :D
My fave camo schemes for Orks are 1-black/purple/yellow/white (camo scheme my old Skarboyz were painted in) and 2-bright red, with yellow and brown spots (my Kommandoz).
I figure Orks have eyes that see in different wavelengths. It looks ded sneaky to them.
-
Nice use of the Marder model. Looks good.

I did think about adding blue or grey camo stripes but as this was the first tank I have painted I chickened out in the end.
There will also be a sizeable Bad Moon contingent to this army, so that may give the opportunity for some lurid camouflage schemes with bright blues and yellows...
Thanks again for the comments.
-
Some new additions just painted. I hope you like them.

-
I really like these. They're more Bloodaxe than the over the top style that became standard after 'Ere We Go. The German tank is great.
-
Nice paints, but losing the minis in the basing and base each tbh. More of a contrast might be an idea?
-
Yes, the trouser and boots look almost too similar to the base. Apart from this, good job! I usually prefer a more chaotic look on my orcs but I like the way you uniformed them.
-
Thanks for the comments :).
On the next five I'm painting, I'm doing the bandaged feet closer to white and the boots more of a brown leather colour. If that solves the contrast issue I may come back and repaint these ones. Trial and error! :D
-
I really like these, the power armoured ork in particular. I think that repainting the orks would be a shame. I dont think that there is anything wrong with the colour of the armour or fatigues (the opposite in fact) but making the bases darker would help to make the models distinct. Maybe a more dark chocolate brown for the bases perhaps?
The purple goggles are fantastic :) I like the grey detailing too. I prefer that look to using metallics, although I tend to use metallics in those situations myself because its rapid to apply.
Anyway, thats a cool force :)
-
Thanks for saying so, Cheetor. Evebn as I typed that earlier response, I actually knew I would never really repaint them (too much other stuff in the leadpile to come back to minis that are already finished!!)! I am happy with them even if the next lot do look better.
As for the bases I want them bright in the early 90s style so I may try a more yellow brown and see how that looks.
Thanks again :)
-
Exactly as Paul said. I never suggested repainting the minis just the bases bud.
Good luck with the next batch.
-
No, that was me! :) just because I am actually painting the next batch slightly differently (being, subconsciously, aware of the contrast issue already).
Thanks again for the comments; very helpful.
Hopefully I can post more up soon.
-
I can only say those are luvly in all their Orkiness :-*. I concur, just a little more contrast would make them perfect, but anyway, great work there :).
-
Thanks!
I have been experimenting on the next batch with differing base colours but no luck so far. Having said that, I am pretty pleased with how they are currently. I will definitely seek further input on the next lot though; they should be done in a few days plus a few days for varnishing &c.
-
The varnish is just drying on these ones now. I made the bandages on the feet more white, and the boots more leather brown, and I am happy with how that is terms of the contrast issues; please let me know your thoughts!
These photos are a bit rubbish (too dark), sorry! I won’t get a chance to take any more for another week or so, so they’ll have to do for now.

I found the two orks with the swords, the leftmost one in particular, to be a bit of a chore to paint. The whole group suffered a bit as a result. They are rubbish and next time I would just leave them. I love the rest of the figures though. Painting the autocannon was particularly enjoyable; the flames on the barrel are so retro it hurts (I think I really got the 2nd edition 40K vibe with that one!). Let me know what you think.
The Blood Axe logo turned out a bit wonky (the perils of drunkpainting!) but I don’t like the model enough to bother re-doing it; it looks pretty good at any time it’s not blown up to this size in general though...
So much character in these old sculpts; totally missing from the current plastics in my opinion.
I hope you like them. :)

I just bought a lot (43) of the old RT Orks and these were the inspiration!

It happens! And, thanks for saying so! That's a big thing to have inspired such a purchase. :)

Thanks! I think I pulled them off :)

I keep loving them, those are truly charming :-*.

You can never have enough! :D

Missed these till now, wonderful painting and Blood Axes happen to be my Klan of choice :)
-
Thanks, chaps!

Here are some further orks straight from being varnished. Two Nobz and a trooper with a lascannon.
I very quickly made some buildings out of junk over the last week or so as a backdrop and made a baseboard to photograph on. I placed the lot in front of a light box and photographed it all under a few lamps. Let me know what you think. I can go into further details if anyone is interested, but I am a rank amateur at photography.
I was again very much going for the 2nd edition 40k vibe on, particularly, the lascannon. It is a bit over the top, but I like it. I hope you do to.

I have a few more that will be done in about a week or two, after which I will take a group shot :)
-
These are getting better every time. The bright colours are really nice and give the brown scheme a load of visual interest.
I dont think that I would consider painting an orks lascannon orange, but looking at your I think that maybe I should.
-
Thank you, kind sir. I am really trying to make sure I improve with each lot.
I must admit, I was a bit dubious about painting the lascannon bright yellow/orange, but I am pretty pleased with how it has come out in the end. :)
-
Yup those new ones are the best yet :) Good job
-
Thanks!
-
Luvly as da previus uns! ;)
Really enjoyable, it's amazing what you are getting out from this palette
-
Thank you for the kind comment :)
-
Another one. He was painted at the same time as the last lot, but I noticed some mistakes that needed to be fixed during varnishing.

It's a pleasure to see these vintage well painted miniatures :-*

Love the colour pallette on these 8)

Thanks, chaps. Glad you like them.

Time for a full army shot methinks :)

Ask and ye shall receive:
And some group shots of the force so far. Sorry the photos are so bad; I have never tried to photograph so many minis at once before. The camera I have (a very basic DSLR – it’s my brother’s which I’m borrowing so I haven’t had much practice on it yet) has the capabilities, but two young children mean only very brief windows for photography. They give an idea of the force, though, and I will try again soon to take better shots.
This will be the core of the army. Blood Axe squads of 5 each, each with a heavy or special weapon, and led by a nob (2nd ed codex).

Thanks chaps. Very motivational. :)
And a Space Marine patrol, trying to clear the area up:

I painted these about 6 years ago, and would do them a bit differently if I was doing them now, but I’m still quite happy with them. I just varnished them after all that time...!

-
Thanks!
-
Really like these Space Marines - especially their camo and packed out look - they look hardcore.
Not sure about the pouches on the legs though.
-
Thanks!
And yes, the pouches on the legs is one element I would not do the same again; I agree it looks a bit silly.
-
With the addition of the marines this is turning into a very nicely themed gaming set. Lovely :)
-
Thanks! :)
-
Thanks. :)
The positive comments I have got have inspired me to add to this marines force, and bulk it out to two or three squads and one or two vehicles (ie a full army for 2nd edition :)).
I will need to think of a chapter to designate them, as I have not done that yet (oops). Perhaps Raptors, or Sons of Medusa....? Hmmm.
Also, given the faux ultra-modern vibe to them, perhaps a 1/48 M2 Bradley or similar instead of a Razorback....?
Oh dear.
-
Stick to your Orks say no to space marines, I'll give you a interwebz cookie :)
-
Thanks. :)
Finishing the ork army is definitely the first priority. Don't worry.
-
An update: some warbikes I have just finished painting. These are excellent models, though the riders are tiny compared to the other, already small, orks in this range (and compared to the bikes!). Anyway they were great fun to paint and I hope you like them.

Love the bikes, some of my favourite Orks of that era.
-
Thanks! They are great models.
-
Cracking stuff 8) 8) 8)
cheers
James
-
Thanks! :)
-
Nice pjs, esp on the Orks. And it's good you traded pouches for skulls on those SMs. That way they won't run out of ammo and have to charge into melee by turn 3 screaming 'For the Emperor!' (or is that in the rules?)
-
Thanks! And whilst it is still a bit of a stretch to say they are realistic, yes that is the look I was going for with the Marines. That is all of them now - I just need to remember what colours I used so I can add to the force...
-
The bikes are particularly cool. The orks have a nice bright and original colour scheme.
Great work.
-
Thanks! The bike models almost paint themselves they are so cool so much of the credit must go to Kev Adams. (I don't know if he did the bikes or just the riders but I assume both.)
-
After a bit of a hiatus, I have finally finished some addition to the force. This time, the Bad Moon contingent. I have always liked Bad Moons, and in 2nd edition 40K you need to take Bad Moon mobs to be able to have 2 heavy weapons per 5 boys, the minimum mob size (all other clans can only take 1).
The colours are exactly the same as the Blood Axes, except substituting blue for the grey. It overall gives them a very different look, though; more so than I expected. At first I wasn’t sure, but it has grown on me to the point I will continue with this scheme for the rest of the Bad Moon contingent.
I hope you like them too.
The group:

Wow, I'm dazzled by the results, these look totally great, love the colours and the tones. They are absolutely saying 'RT!'
-
Fantastic additions to a fantastic thread! I really need to stress this, YOUR MODELS AND TERRAIN IS INCREDIBLY INSPIRATIONAL. :D
It's stuff like this that really gets me going. I love seeing advanced, complex terrain builds with diorama like quality. It's fun porn, but not attainable for me. Styrofoam cups painted grey with textured paint and then grimied up? Now we're talking! Thank you very much for sharing!
-
Absolutely brilliant, love 'em all
-
Yep to echo everyone else, great stuff mate :0
-
This thread keeps on delivering. I love those Rogue Trader era power armoured ork models and they look great in orange. The entire force looks unique, its lovely.

I dont want to offend either the display quality terrain makers or the tabletop quality terrain makers, or anyone in between...
...but...
...there is a part of me that actually gets a kick out of seeing identifiable repurposed household items as terrain. Some people are of course much better at convincingly turning bits of junk into semi-believable sci-fi miniatures, but forgetting individual skill levels for a moment, I enjoy when sci-fi terrain looks a bit like the sets in a cheap old TV show. That it sometimes looks fake makes it look slightly more authentic.
I also like aliens that look like actors in rubber suits :)
-
Lovely vibrant yellow on that Bad Moon in power armour. Like you, I am very fond of that model.
-
Thanks for the responses, chaps. It is very encouraging to get such positive feedback :)

I understand your point exactly, Cheetor. Whilst there is a part of me that really likes the terrain (or buildings) kits that GW puts out, I do yearn for the days when White Dwarf would print instructions about how to build that stuff out of cardboard and rubbish. The same goes for resin terrain kits - they look great, but part of me likes when it looks a bit "home made".
As to your point, Phreedh, I am really glad you like my stuff and find it inspirational. This terrain in the shots was, as you say, literally all made out of household rubbish and pretty much just painted with grey paint that I had mixed some sand into! :) I can go into more details if anyone is interested, but it really was pretty simple to make. My ambitions for the future are to recreate some of the terrain that used to feature in the White Dwarf battle reports of the 1990s - that will be a bit more involved! And, won't happen for a while...! But the simple terrain of this style, I felt would fit the aesthetic of the Rogue Trader era miniatures, so I made it specifically as a photographic backdrop for these figures, though it will get other uses too hopefully :)
-
They certainly look the biz :D
cheers
James
-
Thanks! :)
-
What I like about your terrain is that there are no instructions needed. It's dead simple and not very detailed - and the fear of doing dead simple and not very detailed things might often stop us from doing anything at all. Seeing you do simple stuff and making it look good is very motivating! I have a shitload of Deadzone terrain. I would be much happier, if I would just slap them together, hit them with a little black, grey and white spray and wash them a bit. Instead I fret and worry about how to make them look the absolute best with the least amount of work.
-
Awesome orks, but those marines are brilliant! Love the camo colors then look so much better than bright colors they usually come in

As engineers often say, "Good enough is perfect."
Also worth remembering, done is better than perfect, too! That is a philosophy that sounds simple but is not always so easy to achieve. I am trying for it though :)
