Title: 18th Century Naval/Merchant Crew from Galloping Major
Post by: Galloping Major on August 14, 2014, 12:43:06 PM
(http://www.gallopingmajorwargames.com/userimages/3sailors1Lowest.jpg)

Here are my first three completed sailors since the one released as a “Soldiers Free” to accompany sales of the Ainsty ships. These three are in shirt-sleeves and ‘slops’, the dress will vary among the figures: there was no uniform specified for naval hands at the time though the seafaring man had a highly recognisable style of dress which clearly differentiated him from the “land-lubber”; officers’ uniforms in the British Royal Navy became subject to regulation from 1748. Two of these examples are armed with pistol and knife, the third with a blunderbuss, the weaponry of the rest of the crewmen will vary to include cutlasses, boarding axes and muskets.
There’ll be more to show before long, another twelve sailors are currently in progress including a ship’s captain.
The first release will comprise 4 x 6 figure packs including a command pack and will appear as a pre-order deal first. Gun crew packs will be added later.
Ships’ crews in the French & Indian War can man ships and boats in coastal and river operations and on the Great Lakes, as well as serving ashore in supporting roles and as landing parties from the Monongahela to Quebec and beyond. But our sailors won’t, of course, be limited to service in the American colonies, nor to the service of King George: they’ll serve on the high seas in actions against their national enemies and attacking enemy colonial ports, chasing down pirates, heading off smugglers in home waters and manning and bravely defending the merchant vessels preyed upon by pirates. For that reason as well as carrying our French & Indian War range logo, our sailor packs will be the first to carry our 18th Century Adventure range logo.

I like the look of these a lot.

Would you consider doing some marines for this range too? They would round out a landing party nicely.

Nothing at all, they'll fit in nicely with "Golden Age" of piracy stuff.  :)

Good to see a left hander too. People often put the pistol in the right but if you think about it , the pistol is a one shot wonder when boarding so if you resort to melee weapons (very quickly) you want that in your favoured hand :)

Those sailors look very good.  They are just what I want to sign aboard my ship.  I am very interested in the sailors as I have many ships to crew.  When do you project the sailors pack and the one with the pistol will be available?

Hi Curt, just as soon as I can, planning 4 initial packs including a command pack which I think will constitute a pre-order soon. Gun crews and more stuff will follow, popularity permitting  ;)
Not sure who you meant by "the one with the pistol "?

Thanks for the response to my question on the sailors.  The one with the pistol I referred to is the "The 'Soldiers Free' sailor we released in 2012 to accompany sales of Ainsty ships" that is pictured on your website.  I trust that this figure will also be available when the rest of the crews are ready.  I am looking forward to the opportunity to order still more Galloping Major figures.

The 18th Sailors Pre-Order Deal in the Galloping Major Shop  :)

The first 4 packs each of 6 different 18th Century Sailors as a special pre-order deal which will be sent out as soon as the production castings are available. We can’t say when that will be, December is the most likely estimate, but your patience will be rewarded: there’ll be a special Limited Edition Soldiers Free character variant (limited to 100) which will only go out with pre-orders, so order early to avoid disappointment. He won’t be included in later deal orders and is yet to be revealed.

The pre-order packs will be:

Sailors with Close Quarter Weapons 1
Sailors with Close Quarter Weapons 2
Command & Characters
Sailors with Muskets

24 Sailors plus the Limited Edition Soldiers Free figure.
The examples shown are from all 4 packs - watch out for more pics.

I purchased another ship a few days ago.  It is a really a disease to keep accumulating ships without a clearly defined project planned (other than a desire for a really big game with forts, convoys, islands, etc.).

True, this ship is not quite ready for the crew yet, but I am looking forward to the shore leave period ending soon and the Galloping Major crew reporting aboard the fleet for duty.  Thanks for the update for your loyal customers.

Looks like the problem's down to the host company's server now, they have a message up on the management portal:
"We are currently experiencing a temporary issue with our server that may be causing visibility or access issues to your websites.
Our network team are working hard to have this fixed as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to you & thank you for your patience."
It must have happened progressively, can't get into the website now, and the pictures are run from the website.

If you can include them you might consider adding sailors as follows:
sailor(s) climbing ratlines,
sailor(s) with pikes/boarding hooks,
sailor(s) standing on yard adjusting/reefing sails,
sailor(s) with ropes, gangway, crates and barrels,
sailor(s) pulling rope (saber or pistol in belt for all),
officer with spyglass,
officer with sextant (if historically accurate),
sailor(s) with oars, launching small boat.

If you can include them you might consider adding sailors as follows:
sailor(s) climbing ratlines,
sailor(s) with pikes/boarding hooks,
sailor(s) standing on yard adjusting/reefing sails,
sailor(s) with ropes, gangway, crates and barrels,
sailor(s) pulling rope (saber or pistol in belt for all),
officer with spyglass,
officer with sextant (if historically accurate),
sailor(s) with oars, launching small boat.

Lots of food for thought there, and yes, sextants were extant  ;)
I may risk a lynching if I don't get some regulars out for FIW/SYW before more sailors though  :o lol

No captain and the cabin boy vignette?   ;)

Just a random thought but given the variety of model pirate ships available it seems odd that nobody has produced a range of figureheads to decorate said ships.

So, in the event these models don't come out before loyal Hannah outpost closes (sad!) before these models are released, how will those of us who pre-ordered in the US get our models? Will you be shipping direct or will loyal Hannah still ship those out? Thanks!

I'll get onto Keith to check with him what orders he took and sort out arrangements, thanks for raising this one - I'll personally make sure no-one misses out.

Ye-es.

Although I can see the drawback for figure makers : players only need one figurehead per ship, so it's a limited market.

But, if only two (perhaps: one Neptune, and one with some breasts) you could make plenty of happy captains. lol

Unless they are fitted with some kind of attachment method - perhaps magnets? - so that you could swap the figureheads around.
Some players might choose to have several different figureheads to change ship identities.

After long delays we should soon have the first production castings of the 18th Century Sailors, we'll start packing them as soon as they arrive and, once all the pre-orders have been sent out, they'll be added to the online shop. As a taster, here are some crewmen with close quarter weapons, I finished painting these yesterday evening.

The new crew arrived this morning, these are the best yet. Thanks Lance for the free figures, the wait was well worth it. I will hopefully get some painted up in the next couple of weeks and post them. If you have never purchased from Lance before you won't be disappointed, always exceptional service guaranteed. Thanks

I have a couple of packs that need releasing for The Western Range that are sitting around as masters, when I get more serious sculpting time for Galloping Major, the F&IW?SYW more work on British regulars are at the top of the list along with the Compagnies Franches and others. I do plan to do gun crews etc for the 18th Century Sailors, but that will be later  ;)

All the pre-orders for the 18th Century Sailors were posted on Monday and Tuesday, so the packs and a "unit" deal are now available to order from the online shop of the website.
Here's a gentleman I painted a week or so ago, the captain figure from pack C18 NAV1: 18th Century Sailors Command and Characters, painted as I had in mind when sculpting him as a captain of the Royal Navy (British), uniformed according to the regulations of 1748 (no regulation uniform was prescribed for naval officers before that date, though many would have adopted a similar look earlier, and uniform regs for ratings were still a long way off) which remained unchanged for some decades.

I hope you like him   :)

Cheers,
Lance

The seafaring host arrived today in Mokena, Illinois.  The are most welcome to come aboard.
I am impressed with these figures and will likely need more.
Will the production of these now be on a schedule so that they will be readily available to be ordered?
Good job on the figures.

Indeed and looking for the next banch of sailors and civilians.

A bit of publicity. Lance also have some armed civilian packs that might go with the sailors, more even if you have the idea of smuglers. ;)
