Title: Mounted figures in slouch hats to represent Settlers in DSWA in 1904?
Post by: Estorff on 14 August 2014, 10:08:54 PM
Dear list:  I'm working on a small skirmish scenario in 28mm scale for DSWA during the German-Herero war in 1904.  It requires both mounted and dismounted Schutztruppe, but also German and European war volunteers from the settler community and Boers. I have plenty of options for the regular German Schutztruppen and Boers, but would like to have as many as 8 mounted settlers in slouch hats with rifles who are distinguishable from these two types of mounted figures.  I don't want the figures I use to be wearing inappropriate gear like pith helmets, 19th century uniforms or cowboy outfits, or to be carrying swords.

My known options in 28mm scale are limited.

North Star Africa- There are 2 of North Star's BSAC Troopers who will do fine, plus I can use the Selous figure from this line.

Black Tree Designs- Maybe I can paint the 3 beardless Boer horsemen from the Zulu line to look different enough from the other bearded Boers that I am using as themselves.

Redoubt-   Redoubt has 2 Boer War yeomen in shirtsleeve order with rifles, and another that is a horse holder.

Old Glory-  Their Boer War yeomanry in slouch hats might work, though they are 25mm.

I may have enough right there, but other thoughts most appreciated.

Thanks,

Any way you look at it, you are going to be doing a lot of head swaps.  You are going to be hard pressed to use the ranges you mentioned together, sculpting styles and overall sizes don't really go together.

Empress Boers come with a variety of hats and are interchangeable heads.

Head swaps are my fallback, and yes, some of those manufacturers won't work well with others.  Just wondering if there were other options I've missed.  I do like the Empress Boers, and am using the Natal Native Horse, with the assegai's removed from their quivers, as mounted Hereros.

Foundry did or do have a small range of Boers both mounted and dismounted. Black tree have some big chaps in their zulu war range.

Perry mafeking range may be an option, a little static but could work

Newline Designs have a small range of Boers. I've never seen them in the flesh so can't vouch for their quality but they might work for you.

Thanks very much for the suggestions.  And yes, my name on this list is a tip of the Sudwester to Ludwig v Estorff of the Schutztruppe.
