Title: Terra Block Gaming System
Post by: Chris Abbey on August 22, 2014, 09:18:17 PM
(http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/WebRoot/Namesco/Shops/950003459/MediaGallery/Categories/TerraBlocks/TerraBlock_Gallery/Terra_Block_Starter_Vice_Alley_Gangster_4,Medium.jpg)

This is a project that I have been working on for quite a time now. The idea is to have a relatively cheap system, pre-painted, quick to put together and usable for a wide range of genres including pulp gaming, modern skirmish, fantasy and sci-fi.

The components all come pre-painted on both sides, slate grey for floors and granite grey for walls. They are made from 3mm Medite. The pieces in photo are all from starter set, which assembles in just under 25 minutes!

Looks good, I wonder how painting and accessorizing them can do.

Been thinking about something like this for "interior" games. Normally I like nice scenery, but for building interiors you really have to have something more modular and flexible. This is one sort of project where no-frills low cost really wins out over nice high quality.

Glad you like it. We have aimed to make the basics available first at a good price. The starter set in photograph covers 300mm x 300mm and costs £25, for a painted kit. If you take a look at photos on web site their are some very detailed pieces which we have not released yet, like window pieces, glazed with Perspex with sills, frames and glazing bars on both sides. You can't get much more like a real window than that.

Over the coming months, we have a very long list of extra pieces that we are going to release.

We are also going to set up a customer request system, so if you have a great idea for a new piece that we do not make, we will put it on site as a customer requested product. If you can get 10 people to commit to buying it we will get it designed and made straight away.

Good looking set, Chris. We could use something like that for our Vice Alley campaign.

THANKS for sharing.

Offhand, I think an easy element to add would be wooden floors (parquet or floorboards or both) and walls with simple wainscotting (or wainscotting as a simple add-on). That would be good for any period from the late Tudor era through to Pulp and even modern gaming.

EDIT: One idea is to have double-sided floors. Slabs/Tiles (as shown above) on one side, floorboards on the other.

Glad you like it! Vice Alley is certainly one of the games that I am looking forward to playing on my set! Can't wait to get my hands on a copy as I have a good collection of Gangsters and Feds painted up just waiting for a good set of rules to get them out onto the table.

Excuse the non Pulp figures in photo, but this was unfortunately the only shot that I have taken that shows window section. I have just added some new photos to Terra-Block gallery at http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Terra-Blocks/Terra-Block-Gallery (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Terra-Blocks/Terra-Block-Gallery)

My first thought was - "hmm, bit plain" but the idea has grown on me incredibly quickly and I actually admire the idea more now FOR keeping it plain.  I could see a simple colour pairing combo (brown floor/white walls, but other spring to mind) being an effective interior, for example.

Nice one, and very well priced!

Burning a stone pattern into the face would make this suitable for modular dungeons too....wouldn't it?
Title: Re: Terra Block Gaming System
Post by: Chris Abbey on August 24, 2014, 09:34:32 AM
Keeping it plain has been a conscious design decision for two reasons, firstly plain grey walls can be used with a little imagination to represent dungeons, sewers, starship interiors, temples, warehouses, offices, apartments etc. Secondly we wanted to be able to offer a very cost effective starter set. With this design we can make a 300mm x 300mm set for £25, and a 300mm x 600mm set for £45. This is because the pricing of a laser cut product needs to be based on the cutting time.

However, we see this as a strategic range which will get new items added on a weekly basis and we are planning to put a mechanism in place where customers can request a piece, then when 10 customers have committed to buying we will get it made.

The next pieces to become available will be wooden floorboard floor tiles, stone texture walls and corners, double doors and single doors in different styles which will all open and a piece with 15mm scale doors and windows.

Do you do custom builds? I have a series of modular scifi units CADed up with the intent of seeing how much it would be to get them laser cut. I always figured it would be too expensive so I resigned myself to making them out of foamboard.

Yes, we can do custom builds.

Send me an email at chris_abbey@btinternet 'dot' com

We would need drawings in a format we can work with, ideally Correl Draw or HPGL, but their are other formats we can import.

Cheers,

Chris

Great idea -  I've been waiting about 2 years for someone to do this. I was going to make a set myself but it was a lot of effort with only basic tools...

Personally I would strategically place magnets at different points on the walls and create a range of flavour pieces with fairly bland walls and floors. That way you could swap in specifics i.e. light fittings, signs/paintings, consoles/terminals, wood panelling etc to flavour the setting towards something specific.

First request -  do a bank vault piece with a big door like this: http://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/images/EQ1.jpg

Thanks for putting this on the market. I'm in!

I have just added the system for dealing with customer requests for new 'Terra-Block' pieces to our web site.

The idea is that in a similar way to Wargames Factory and Eureka, you can request a new piece to be made as part of the Terra-Block range, do a bit of lobbying around your gaming mates to see if any one else would like it. When we get 10 pre-ordered, we will get it made and shipped out to you.

The form for requesting new pieces is available from : http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Terra-Blocks (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Terra-Blocks)

Looking forward to making some of your requests!

"I don't know quite what they are up to in their, but I fear they are up to no good...."

I've had quite a few requests to add additional doors and windows, so this is a bit of a work in progress shot. I hope to get them out next week and will let you know how I progress.

Their are more photos of this 'set' in our photo gallery at http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Terra-Blocks/Terra-Block-Gallery (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Terra-Blocks/Terra-Block-Gallery).
I'm intending to leave it set up on the workbench and have a game of Pulp Alley with my son when he comes over at the weekend.

Can I ask why the straight wall sections have those little corner tabs on them? It seems like it just means that straight walls end up having little buttresses every few meters... Is it something to do with joining them together?
Title: Re: Terra Block Gaming System
Post by: Chris Abbey on September 01, 2014, 04:54:40 PM
The walls have been designed with those buttresses for strength and to ensure that when they are assembled the walls are at 90 degrees. I know it is a compromise, but it does really add to the durability of the system.

If you don't like them in your room interior, you can just turn the pieces around and have the buttresses on the outside of your games 'set'. I am planning to wallpaper the outsides of some pieces with dolls house wall paper so that my set is reversible. I will then be able to use the sides with buttresses for industrial factory / warehouse type 'sets' and turn them around to use the wallpapered sides for the inside of restaurants and apartments.

Grid or No Grid?
This is a Loading Bay for Terra-Blocks range. I've had a lot of requests for pieces with wooden flooring. I like to be able to see a 1" / 25mm grid on floors so I don't need to be using a tape-measure inside buildings, however it does detract a bit from 'realism' of model. If you have an opinion, could you leave a comment for me at https://www.facebook.com/sally4thgames (https://www.facebook.com/sally4thgames)

I REALLY like this!  I want cold war/Y2k/post 9/11 survivalist bunkers to my post-apoc Zombie games and this is a great way to pull it off.  By virtue the bunkers are not very big in the very best of circumstances, so the D-lux set would work perfectly, and be modular enough to work for a variety of different layouts.  I also appreciate seeing the pics of 20mm as that's the scale I play in for these games.  Cheers!

I'd say no grid. The wood effect looks good.

I'd prefer no grid personally.

Glad you're looking at wooden floors.

Thanks for all your comments. We are looking to make the loading bay and wooden floor tiles available to order next week and will probably have an option for no grid and with the discrete little crosses to mark a grid shown in the photo of the loading bay, as Pulp gamers seem to say no grid and D&D and Star Wars gamers seem to like a grid.

We have photos in the Terra-Blocks gallery of 15mm & 20mm games set up on Terra-Blocks, so if you have not seen them they are at: http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Terra-Blocks/Terra-Block-Gallery (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Terra-Blocks/Terra-Block-Gallery)

This week we have added the following items to the Terra-Block Range:

(http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/WebRoot/Namesco/Shops/950003459/MediaGallery/Categories/TerraBlocks/TerraBlock_Gallery/Terra_Block_Display_28mm_Dr_Who_2,Medium.jpg)

TB021   5cm x 10cm tile double height wall with four strip windows
TB022   5cm square wall with rectangular window
TB023   5cm x 10cm double height wall with door opening
TB024   Double Door Wood Style 1

The house part of the Shotgun Shack is 65mm wide and 120mm long, divided into four rooms. This represents a building that in real life was 12' wide. Their is also a porch front and back.

This week, Sally 4th has added 8 additional pieces to their multi-purpose, multi-genre Terra-Block terrain range. The pieces added include futuristic metal single and double doors, platform level single and double door openings and stone tile finished ramps and platforms. All of the pieces are interchangeable with the rest of the Terra-Block range so wooden doors can be removed from door openings and swapped out with metal ones to achieve a different look.
The ramps and doors are particularly suitable for representing contemporary, near future or science fiction industrial or storage facilities.

Hi Martin, I know what you mean! I've been gaming for 35 years now and have not needed Terra-Blocks until I came up with the idea a couple of months ago and since then have been using it pretty much every week. I am busy getting ready for our trade stand at Fiasco in a couple of weeks, but after that I have a lot more Terra-Block ideas. Next up will be a shopping arcade, but if anyone has any requests, now is the time to let me know!

TB065 Retail Shelves Fitted x 3 £4.50 GBP
TB066 Retail Shelves Free Standing x 2 £5.00 GBP

My Terra Blocks order of the larger basic set arrived yesterday. So I spent yesterday evening gluing the bits together and then trying out various configurations. Seriously impressed.
Now I need to work out what other bits I want - some more doors and some corridors for a start. Hints have been dropped in my direction of organising a game with my 3rd Doctor Who and Unit figures against Paul's large collection of Daleks. The Terra Blocks look like featuring when I get round to it next year.

That's how it starts, like your first tattoo or cup of coffee...They should send all members a free sample, say a room and a section of corridor,...then many would want more,...more,....MORE.  :-*

I don't even need to be sent a free sample,....I'm addicted already and I haven't even put in my first order yet.  lol

Hi Martin,

I think that what you buy next depends on which league you are running in the Dr Who game.
If you are playing the Daleks, you need loads of these:

If you are running the Dr's League, I would max out on these:

Stackable Buildings.

This is a work in progress, so interested to hear if anyone thinks it is useful. I am experimenting with floor / roof trays that work with standard Terra-Block components to allow you to build a multi-story building with changeable interiors layouts that lifts apart for figure movement during a game. We are planning to play a Pulp Alley MI6 vs SMERSH game this evening on the terrain so will post an AAR in due time. In the meantime, very interested in some feedback.

Agree with Phil. Apart from dungeon-like structures I don't bother with interiors. Too much hassle IMO (although I would love to play in your mall, that would be awesome!). These buildings are very nice!

When I get some free time some of them will be made up for multi-genre use, and a couple of things will be heading into my Old West town of Upsheet Creek.
The clear bases are very nice too.

It does not have to be big, and it does not need to be grey!
This is our latest idea for taking Terra-Blocks to the next level.
Fothrington Hall is a complete set of unpainted Terra-Block pieces plus a link to allow you to download a set of photo-realistic textures of wallpaper, carpet, stone work, rugs, pictures etc. to make this model.

If it is popular, we have lots more ideas of sets that we can design.
Please let me know what you think, of this set in particular and the concept in general.

I am really interested to hear what people think about terrain sets with photo-realistic papers to finish them off rather than painting. I have a long list of sets that I am thinking of designing including 1920's buildings, present day / near future and sci-fi depending on what sort of reaction I get from the gaming community. We could set up a download page so you could choose from a wide range of textures to apply to standard terra-block pieces, and gamers could submit textures to be added to the downloads. This is a popular technique in the world of model railway and it combines the precision, strength and durability of terra-block components with the detail and ease of photographic textures.

Just to let you know, I have just added the 10 page set of downloadable papers and textures that are used to make Fothrington Hall to our web site. This includes the paintings and rugs. The set contains all of the wall coverings to go with the set, but because Terra-Blocks are standard components you can of course use them with any pieces you may already have in your collection.

I'd love to see some photos posted of other gamers set up's using them.

Post by: Chris Abbey on April 20, 2015, 05:10:55 PM
Sally 4th will be at Salute as part of the Wargames Illustrated stand running Terra-Block workshops.

We have two projects available.

The Science Lab

The Country House

Both of these projects are constructed from components of the Terra-Block system. Come along to a workshop and make one to take home with you. The workshops are completely free. Places on them can be booked through the Wargames Illustrated on the day. The kits have been provided free of charge by Sally 4th, and I will be their on the day to guide you through the straightforward construction and answer any questions you may have about the Terra-Block range.

Full details and timings at : http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Hobby-Pages/Terra-Block-Modeling (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Hobby-Pages/Terra-Block-Modeling)

We will also have some of our photo-realistic buildings on display, so please pop across and have a chat with us on the day.

We have had a huge amount of interest in the workshops that we are running at Salute on Saturday, and lots of people have said they love the terrain sets and would like to do the workshops but can not get there... so.. we've added the texture sheets as a free download from our website. These have been designed to be used with the standard 5cm floor tile, single and corner wall (with or without windows) and the doorway. Just print them out and glue them on.

We also have a free promotion running from now until the end of May. If you order £20 or Terra-Blocks you can select either the filing cabinet and lab bench or the desk and cair set as a free gift. These are not for sale, they will only be available this way.

The locked desk and the filing cabinet make excellent plot points in Pulp Alley!

All the details for the free downloads and free furniture are on the Terra-Block Modelling page, link below:

A Terra-Block Warehouse has featured in many of our games of Pulp Alley, from Perilous Island to Dr Who, Scooby Doo and 1920's Gangsters. When ever we have posted an after action report featuring it, we've had emails asking which pieces from the Terra-Block range were used, which we did not really know.

We have now worked this out and put together a 'Warehouse Deal' at 20% discount compared to buying the individual bits and pieces. Full details at: http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Terra-Block-Warehouse (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Terra-Block-Warehouse)

Terra-Block 'Old School Dungeon'
Terra-Blocks have been used to represent just about everything from the inside of a Starship to the dark corners of a sewer or dungeon with a whole host of Tombs, Warehouses, Country Houses, Shopping Malls & Office Blocks in between. Over the last few weeks I have been drawn back towards my gaming roots, when over 30 years ago a school friend introduced be to this sparkly new concept of dungeon exploration.
We started dungeon delving  again, first with Frostgrave then Otherworld Skirmish and D&D 5e.

We wanted something special to game on, so using our established Terra-Block pieces we have put together a set with downloadable textures which we feel is a great value starter for anyone wanting to put together some terrain for Old School Dungeon delving.

The starter set contains 53 5cm square tiles and can be ordered now at a pre-order discount of 20%, i.e £40 up until 1st October.
We have also made some expansion packs which also come with downloadable cover textures and range in price form £4 - £6
Over the coming weeks we plan to add many more pieces and sets to the range.

Terrain storage has always been one of our primary design goals. I have a large dedicated games room but after 35 years of collecting, I am running out of space. Because Terra-Blocks are standard components that are put together in different ways they stack up and fit into a very small sized box.

It's not on the web site yet!
As Dave Phipps mentioned, we have made a number of themed Terra-Block sets to feature in the next Pulp Alley campaign book.
We had a photo session last night as David needs the photos to go in the book, so we took this photo as a bit of a spoiler.

We will have a range of North African themed Terra-Blocks coming out, in time for the Egypt campaign book (but we have not decided the timings yet), this will include a core set to make 'Rick's Cafe' together with three add on sets to convert it into a museum, villa or souk. We are also planning to do optional furnishing sets to go with these 4 locations. More details here, and on our Facebook page as we firm up on the details.

Looking forward to seeing this, Chris. Sounds great!

"We'll always have Paris"

An interior shot from 'Rick's Cafe', and a bit of an update.
We are going to call the new range Terra-Block On Location sets.
The initial release is cunningly designed to support the upcoming Pulp Alley Egypt Campaign.
At the moment we have 4 sets. Each set has a Terra-Block pack and a furniture and set dressing pack.
Rick's Cafe is the 'core set' for the North African locations, the other set will contain additional pieces to transform the cafe into either a museum, a villa or a souk. Current plan is to run a quick Kickstarter for a couple of weeks in October and offer some package deals and stretch goals and get everything out by Christmas!

... and I meant to say, Terra-Block On-Location Sets can be used for a wide range of periods / genres.

Very nice! I see use using these buildings in a lot of different Pulp Alley scenarios. Can't wait to see more.

Just as a bit of an aside, at Sally 4th we are very busy putting final touches to our 'Exotic Location Sets' which will include Terra-Blocks, Furniture and metal & resin accessories, however....

Michael, one of my customers recently posted some nice photos of a med-lab he had made from our Deluxe Starter set, which was one of the first products we designed, so I thought I would share it with you all.
