Title: Mutineer miniatures updated 02/10/14
Post by: Jeff965 on September 06, 2014, 06:37:04 PM
These are part of a commission that I've just finished. £3.50 for the foot figures and £7.00 for the mounted figure. I think their worth it but I would like some opinions. The customer said he'd do the basing to match his collection. what do you think?

Think of it another way - how long did each figure take to paint? Work out how much you are prepared to charge for an hour's work and then charge accordingly. It's hard to tell from photos but £3.50 a foot figure may be way too cheap?  ;)

James and Paul,
I've sent you pms but I'm such a novice at this I don't know if you've received them. Could you let me know.

I think they're very, very nice and well worth the money. If I had any cash to spare I'd be commissioning you in a flash. All of which begs the question "are you underselling yourself?"

I remember doing a job at a similar "mates' rate" on a hoard of WH40K stuff (only time I'd ever paint such things) and it ended up taking me about 60 hours to earn £200  :(

They are splendid but as stated above how long does it take to paint one miniature (also don't forgot to add the expenses of paint, basing materials and brushes) To make a decent wage you would need to produce a bunch of miniatures an hour but yet this is purely though as when you see it as a business. When you see it as a way to earn some hobby funds and you enjoy painting miniatures you can actually ask how much you like and what which amount pleases you.

I'd willingly pay that! (And probably more... ;))
The figures look wonderful.

Charge more.
Fine painting.
I know it takes me about 40 minutes to paint a Foundry MI figure.
I would not sale them for 3.50.

Very nice painting and not wanting to upset the apple cart have to agree they are too cheap.

I too would have been tempted to commission at that rate but I think James and Paul have probably booked your time for this year already

I agree.
Jeff and I have agreed a higher rate that we both feel is acceptable.

Well thank you lads for all the kind comments and advice, it seems the consensus is that I'm selling them to cheaply however the price reflects the fact that they are not based and not to detailed. I have recently taken early retirement and it was suggested to me by some friends that I should do some painting for cash, what with all the spare time on my hands. I did this for the IM figures (13 foot and 1 mounted) and at a leisurely pace it took me a week to complete them. I recently completed 30 Perrys Napoleonic Black Watch Highlanders for my own collection, which seemed to take forever and if Im honest became a bit of a chore in the end and is not something I would want to do again in a hurry. I enjoy painting and in some perverse way I enjoyed painting for someone else even more. I will take some time to reflect on the prices but I suppose if it comes down to it at the end of the day it's just an agreement between you and another person.
Anyway thanks again to all those who showed an interest.

Jeff.

I suppose that ultimately it is your choice on what you charge especially if painting makes you happy. Just remember that it is easier to start high and lower your prices that start low and increase them  ;)

My experience was a strange one: I often get bored of painting projects and have a very bad habit of abandoning things 3/4 of the way in. Because I was being paid to paint I had to power through that mental barrier and finish the job. I was very proud of the finished job but have painted very little since (have just picked brushes up this week after a 12 month hiatus).

Twelve months! Was the commission anything to do with that? I haven't had the urge to abandon painting projects yet but I've had to really push myself to finish some (the Highlander unit being one of those). I suppose the psychology of painting is a subject in itself.

I finished the commission (didn't enjoy the figures but the vehicles were very nice kits) and then did a couple of other smaller jobs - some FoW French that were very easy to do. The next batch was some Late Roman cavalry for me and unfortunately I had one unit that I just couldn't get right and that sort of broke my mojo. In the meantime the painting room became the junk room. It is now the painting room again; this is in part driven by my daughter having discovered D&D and me wanting to be a good dad and provide painted monsters!

Sorry for the diversion into my painting psychology there.

Normal programming will now resume  lol

Yes your quite right and that is something else I will have to factor in if I decide to do this. I'll have to do some research online but if anybody can help on here it would be a great help, before I retired I was a PAYE drone so I don't have any experience of working for myself even in a minor capacity.

I'd pay a bit more than that for sure.  I agree that the figures posted are more "simple" than most as far as painting goes.  But you have a beautiful, crisp wargaming paint style --- which is 100% in line with how I prefer to have figures.

As mentioned, paint some figures to the similar standard - measure the time frame, decide on an hourly rate and go accordingly.  I do think the guy got a stellar deal.  I'd absolutely pay you to paint up some figs of mine sometime.  They look perfect.

Depends on where you are and how you do it.  In the U.S. there are several types of specialized income.  For instance there is a special section if you make less than $10,000 selling things as a "hobby" etc.  So, by all means, talk to a tax specialist --- if you're being taxed for the income you can also write off every single thing you use to produce them (all materials etc.).  Tax code is very complex, so grab a specialist and see what they can do for you.

If you are in the UK PM me and I will forward the links to HMRC website for forms you need to complete, there are a lot of things you can claim for including research material books mags etc as well as the obvious stuff paint brushes etc

Excellent work, I am really into Personality Sets (the same figure mounted and on foot) for wargaming (the mounted figure) and role-playing games (the foot figure).  I can't explain why, but it works for me

Thank you for the kind comments, this is the unit completed except for basing. I've tried to make the officer stand out from the rank and file so I gave him a light bay to ride and a nice blue stable jacket.
